INVERTER

An inverter converts DC to AC. It produces 220 volt 50Hz AC from DC power available from battery. Normally 12 volt batteries are used as the DC source of power. Inverter capacity is expressed in Volt amperes (VA). There are inverters with capacity lower than 100 VA and models with capacity 10KVA or even more. Backup time of inverter is the amount of time the unit can supply AC power to rated full load in the absence of mains AC power. Backup time depends on battery capacity. In domestic applications 500VA, 800VA, 1KVA models with backup time of 3 Hours to 6 Hours are common. Modern inverters have attractive get up and added features. Figure 5.7 shows a common inverter. Essential components of a basic inverter are– 1. Main Inverter Transformer 2. Battery 3. Battery charger 4. Oscillator 5. Power transistors 6. Power transistor driver 7. Output Filter 8. Accessories The main inverter transformer has centre-tapped primary winding. The transformer is similar to a step up transformer and has more number of turns in the secondary. Positive terminal of battery is connected to the centre tap of primary winding. The two ends of primary winding are connected to the negative battery terminal through power transistors. The power transistors are used in switch mode. The oscillator section generates square wave train pulses of high frequency. Square wave pulse trains are generated by using multi-vibrator circuits. The power transistor driver circuit uses this square wave pulses to trigger the power transistors alternately. Now a day’s high power MOSFET power transistor are being used. As the power transistors are triggered alternately, current flows from DC battery from the centre tap of the transformer to the two ends of primary windings alternately. Because of this the direction of current in the primary changes alternately and AC is produced in the secondary. The waveform of AC available at the secondary is similar to square wave. Output from secondary is fed to the filter circuit. Filter circuit filter out harmonics from the square wave and produces AC of nearly sinusoidal waveform. In a real inverter, each end of primary winding is connected to the negative battery terminal through a set of power transistors connected in parallel. Because of very fast on off triggering of the power transistors, considerable amount of heat is generated. For proper heat dissipation, adequate heat sinks are used. The battery charger consists of a step down transformer, rectifier and filter circuit. When mains AC is available, the battery charger keeps the battery charging. The output socket is connected to the mains AC supply. When mains AC supply fails, DC to AC conversion takes place and a switch changes connection of the output socket to the AC obtained from DC. The switchover time is less than 1 second and is typically several milliseconds. Again when mains AC supply becomes available DC to AC conversion stops and the switch changes connection of output to the available mains AC supply. Inverters can be classified as– 1. Analog Inverters 2. Digital Inverters Depending on the type of waveform of the output inverters can be classified as– 1. Square wave inverters 2. Sine wave inverters Analog inverters use analog components. The oscillator is implemented using transistor based multivibrator or RC based circuits and analog electronic components are used in the control circuits. Digital inverters use digital components and ICs. Oscillator circuit is implemented using multi-vibrator circuits made of digital ICs. Some of the ICs frequently used in inverters are Timer IC 555, operational amplifier 741 IC, LM 324, LM339, SG3525A etc. Square wave output of different frequencies can be obtained by using timer IC 555. The basic operational amplifier 741IC accepts two inputs and gives an output which is the amplified difference between the inputs and commonly used as a comparator. LM324 and LM339 contains multiple number of 741IC. SG3525A is used in oscillator section. Microprocessor and microcontrollers are also used in the control circuit of advanced models. The AC output of a Sine wave inverter has sinusoidal waveform while the waveform of AC of a square wave inverter is similar to square wave. In both cases, the frequency is 50 Hz and the wave form can be observed visually by using an oscilloscope. The output of a square wave inverter contains unwanted harmonics which causes certain disadvantages like noise and vibration in case of inductive loads e.g. fan, and hence is not recommended for sensitive equipment like computer. Common features of an inverter are mains on indicator, indicator for battery status to display whether the battery is low or charged or is being charged, overload protection, short circuit protection, indicator for blown fuse etc. Accessories include battery connecting wire of proper current carrying capacity, output voltage sensor, battery voltage sensor, output current sensor, buzzer for audio output signal to indicate error status, MCB, fuse, heat sinks for power transistors etc. The inverter should be placed in a well ventilated room and battery connecting wires should not be long. The inverter and the battery should be periodically inspected. Common problems are defects in power transistors, transistor driver and oscillator circuit, charger circuit, break in transformer etc. Before starting trouble shooting, the inverter should be thoroughly inspected under switched off condition. By opening the cover connections and circuit modules should be checked and traced. Study of detailed circuit diagram of the particular model is always helpful.
