Electricity Saver

We were once distributors of a power correction based electricity saving device, what we called the “Electricity Saver”. A product which claimed 30% cost savings.
After rigourous testing & after 3rd party independant tests, we decided to discontinue distribution of this product due to its false claims. Similar products are found all over the internet, all with the same false claims, many are still available. To help educate the public, we’ve kept this page online to help inform users.
So do these sort of devices work? Simply put. No
Products like these have been independently tested and have been found to NOT SAVE YOU MONEY OR REDUCE YOUR ELECTRICITY CONSUMPTION.
Since posting this we’ve received many threats from dubious retailers & distributors claiming of annecdotal evidence of “savings”. But all have declined to send a product for some real lab testing.
We’ve also heard reports of new products hitting the market under various names & packaging with similar claims. With some going as far as filming fake testings, or including test reports which don’t actually confirm any power savings.
Here are some links to some real testing of these types of products. If it isn’t listed here, don’t assume that it works. Any product using power correction to reduce consumption will not save any domestic users in Australia any money.
Electricity Saving Box – Reviewed & Debunked
Silicon Chip Magazine – November 2007 Issue
For household users, who seem to be the target audience for this product, we can say categorically that this product will not save you any money, against the claim of the manufacturer. This is because there is a logical flaw with this product.
As mentioned previously, the electricity supplier bills you for real power, yet provides apparent power. If this product corrects the power factor, which is the ratio of these, it can only save them money, not your household.
The only conceivable way that it could save you money is if you are being charged extra by the electricity supplier for having a low power factor, something that does not happen with domestic users in Australia.
There has even been products like these advertised/reviewed on Television & even sold in a major retail chain – with the same false claims.
Enersonic Power Saver – Reviewed & Debunked
Silicon Chip Magazine – May 2008
THE ELECTRICITY SAVING BOX DOES NOT SAVE ELECTRICITY. IT IS A FRAUD. …… It will not result in any reduction in real power as measured by any appliance energy meter or the meters in your power box at home. It will probably lead to a small increase.

    Jane – if they follow the same principles as the ones reviewed by Silicon Chip Magazine – then no they won’t work.
    To be really sure – perhaps contact the magazine and see if they’ve tested or reviewed those particular devices.

    Dear sir,
    Your information about the energy saver has saved me? I was going to buy one, should I drop the idea?
  6. Myth Busteron 05 Jan 2009 at 2:02 pm6
    Seems to be another product has hit the Australian market – with a website full of non-relevant international test papers & “tested” by the Australia Office of Fair trading (The mere mention should ring warning bells for most!) – and Austest..
    DUE TO LEGAL THREATS – THE WEBSITE NAME MENTIONED HAS BEEN REMOVED.
    If the distributors are so sure about the effectiveness of their product – I suggest they send a unit to Silicon Chip magazine for some REAL testing..

    Remember – These devices DO correct the power factor but since residential customers are only billed on kw.h – NO SAVINGS WILL BE HAD

    Your understanding and electrical engineering experience is really limited. Perhaps you have not even graduate from any university. If power factor is corrected, the real power will decrease accordingly. This is common sense as the phase angle reduces.
    So you website better do more homework before disclaiming that it is a fraud.

  11. Myth Busteron 14 Mar 2009 at 9:12 am11
    Edwin,
    The point is power factor correction will not save you money in residential installations.
    We’re not claiming that these products do not fix the power factor, we are claiming that it will not REDUCE YOUR ELECTRICITY BILL as customers are only billed in KWHs.
    For some expert reviews on these products, contact Silicon Chip magazine from the links above who have done REAL labratory tests on these types of products and have proven that these products DO NOT WORK!

    Well I was sucked in with a quick click now button – I actually thought it was a monitor that informed you of power through appliances ie: plug saver in and the appliance into saver. When I opened it and started reading the brochure it was immediately apparant that is was all rubbish and so the Power Saver and brochure were filed under rubbish in the WPB. At the same time I unsubsccribed from TopBuy the people who peddled this garbage to me. BTW- I have signed up for 4KW solar system :)

    Thanks for all of this info. Its a great help. How can I reduce my electric bill.
  15. Sparkyon 08 Aug 2009 at 7:58 pm15
    Edwin tan – i think it is your electrical engineering that needs refreshing. Correcting power factor will not reduce the real power (kW) it will only reduce the reactive power (kVA) which (through the sum of the vectors) reduces the apparent power (also measured in kVA).
    There is no, and will never be, a device that you can plug in to an outlet that can reduce your kWh power consumption. That being said, an energy monitor can help you identify which devices are using the most energy (kWh) and help you to reduce your consumption by turning off energy hungry devices when not in use. For example ~25% of an average homes energy consumption is due to standby power.
  16. JGon 10 Sep 2009 at 9:09 pm16
    I have noticed a similar device has turned up on graysonline.com for on line auction. it guarantees 10% money saving for a comparable period or your money back! Big claim but I wonder how you prove it?
    I agree that absolutely these things do not save you money for the reasons already stated.
  17. sattvfanon 16 Nov 2009 at 11:56 pm17
    Does anybody please educate me on how to calculate the energy consumption..
    Say I have a 300 W television, which to my understanding is 300 W per hour (Please correct me if I am wrong) and that for me to consume 1.2 kwh, the tv has to be turned on for 4 hours straight, right ?
    (Because 300 W x 4 = 1200 W, which is 1.2 kW).
    If this is correct then the cost of watching TV for 4 hours is only about 7 cents (~6 cents per kwh in where I live)
    Thanks
    Cheers

    Just a note for Sparky. I totally disagree with you. From ALL the tests and actual installations we have done, POWER FACTOR CORRECTION REDUCES KILOWATTS AND KILOWATT HOURS.
  19. Myth Busteron 10 Jan 2010 at 7:32 pm19
    Vince,
    Have you done any tests on actual residential installations using plug in Power Correction Devices? As far as I now – Power correction can only reduce electricity costs in industrial situations.
    This post was put up to inform consumers of SCAM electricity saving plug in adaptors which promise outrageous discounts off consumer electricity bills. Out of the 3 consumer devices tested – this has not been the case. With proof from electronics enthusiast magazine Silicon Chip.
  20. Frustratedon 09 Mar 2010 at 10:46 am20
    We have clocks that are running fast and cheap electric ceiling fans that keep shorting out due to power fluctuations. The power company refuses to do anything about it because the voltage isn’t high enough. I understand that the power saver won’t save us money but will it fix this problem?
  21. Matt Jensenon 12 Mar 2010 at 7:16 pm21
    Can power factor correction through a KVAR unit save electricity and money when connected directly to a residential main power box through a dedicated 2-pole circuit breaker positioned in the top left corner of the panel? Fox News gave them a thumbs up. What say you??????
  22. Fabioon 15 Apr 2010 at 4:57 am22
    It’s surprising how this can lead to a discussion. Technically speaking, as some have pointed out, it is impossible to generate economic savings this way … unless your utility bills you for reactive energy. Maybe these devices improve your power factor, but if you are a domestic consumer then you are not interested in correcting it (savings-wise) because you are not billed for reactive energy. However, your utility is, because when you raise your power factor towards 1, your reactive current vectorial component reduces, thus reducing your real current consumption (it’s active vectorial component, which is what you are billed for, keeps the same) so this optimizes the use of the transport network since the total current is reduced. That´s why they are only interested in huge consumers power factor, not yours. Think about it this way: if your installation has a power factor of .95 (Typical), there is only room for a 5% improvement, and remember, you are not billed for it anyway.

    I have been looking into and reading all these blogs for ages and I have found that no Powersaver under 30 mfd or over 80 (single phase) will save any measurable amount of money nor correct the Power Factor measurable. You will be getting what you pay for with these units. Cheap will not work. But check your engineering. Capacitors over 30, and I believe 60mfd is a good bell curve range, will dramatically increase the Power Factor which will lower amps which then equates to watts, etc. But I found more important to me they will also dramatically reduce spiking and surges, keeping motors from over-working and heating. To me getting extra years on my sensitive equipment and motors is a bigger savings than my electricity bill. But perhaps people should spend more time investigating the Smart Meters. I have been and found the world meetings on these meters with electricity companies is staggering. This is becoming a world-wide endeavour to install them into every home & every country. This meter will then monitor and make chargeable all aspects of electricity including apparent power which is electricity already registered through the meter and unused by appliances and which these experts are saying we are not yet charged for but we certainly will be. The Power Saver is really going to make a difference then. If you really check into the industry you can find one or two units that are honestly built with the consumer in mind, that do not make false claims and the representatives are required to undergo extensive training. The maximum a capacitor can save is 30% in the most controlled test environment. At 60mfd you could conceiveably see savings and great equipment protection.

    So DEWI do you have the names of these products with the comsumer in mind?
  25. Dewion 04 Jun 2010 at 3:10 pm25
    Steven, Ah names of these products. Only talking single phase. There is all kinds of crap on the market particularily in USA – EcoTrust. It really is only a 30 uf capacitor and “extremely” expensive.
    I went back on the ebay as I have not look for some time and the same-mo stuff is there. Junk mostly 6uf plastic caps. I know there is one manufacturer in connecticut that makes the generic models that are most of what is advertised in USA and they are 30 uf and over priced.
    In checking on the units I talked about they are not sold over the net. And I tracked down the Eand J distributors for Australia. They seem to have set up a well organized network of distributors throughout the country – I AM NOT A DISTRIBUTOR. The product is called PPS Power Savers/PPSmart Industries. Apparently it has multiple functions: PF increase, protection from spikes, surges, and lightning, Reduced EMF Radiation, Motor life extension by as much as 15%. Apparently they do not do internet marketing nor selling and no MLM. and for now the product is exclusive to Australia, S. Africa and Mexico. She went on about controlled laboratory testing results and extensive Certifications and a lot more stuff I did not write down. It is a device that is a plug in or can be hardwired to breaker panel for greater protection. I have really been studying the junk for sale and I have a list of what I DO NOT want and this PPS does not have anything on my do not want list. So I’m impressed.

    Another one of these power savers was spruiked on the Today Tonight show on seven last night. Still a scam?
  30. Sparkyon 01 Feb 2011 at 9:14 am30
    It saw that sales blurb on Today Tonight – and it sounded as it was just another power correction system.
    Take a squizz at http://michaelbluejay.com/electricity/powerfactor.html it sums it up really.
    In Australia, residential customers will not get any savings based on power correction. Only industrial customers do.
    Maybe someone in authority will have to do a real test on these systems.
    ps. But hey – if someone wants to pay me to install one – no problem!
  31. barryon 01 Feb 2011 at 9:24 am31
    I work for a utility in South Australia and we have tested a few of these types of devices, as we’re always pushing ‘green’ devices, energy efficient replacements, power strips etc. While they do correct the pf (Power factor) – we bill residential customers in Kwh’s. The amusing thing is, these devices consume power themsevles, so they will infact have a net result of increasing your bill (but by a neglible amount).
    Want so save electricity? Get a grid connected solar system – for a little more than the $800 today tonight advertised system.
    think of these as the new snake oil merchants.
    Stick them there with the fuel economy boosting devices, magical anti-ageing creams, and penis elargement pills.

    Well if you have a new Smart mater witch now read True power Reactive power and you power factor you are in trouble.
    Demonstration…
    Frige runs at 1kw (10000 Watt) At 230 Volt
    I=P/V
    I = 1000/230
    I= 4.3Amps
    Power Factor of .5
    Is
    I=1000/230(/PF)
    I=8.6Amp …
    Power formula is VxI
    230vx8.6a = 1974Watt
    Double what your fridge is meant to be running at, That is what your Smart meter will measure as usage…

    Regarding the questions about the Today Tonight Power Saver: yes, it is a scam. ACA also ran a similar story on the same night.
    It surprises (and annoys) me that Today Tonight is still spruiking the product on their website.
    I have written a blog posts which explains why these products will not work for residential customers here:

  35. Viperon 24 Mar 2011 at 6:52 pm35
    A standard meter is measuring kwh , this is correct . However it is also correct that amperes are a component (value ) of watts . Learn your formulas , meters do read Amps by virtue
  36. roger colcloughon 04 May 2011 at 8:05 pm36
    Well despite the fact that these devices may or may not save power they do the following :
    1. Ensure that your inductive load receives a better power factor. Because of the reduction in amps the load will run cooler and therefore prolonge it’s life.
    2. The capacitors will smooth spikes in what is a dirty sine wave, especially away from urban areas, which will be a lot better for all your electronics
    3. Stop those annoying and damaging power fluctuations
    I’d also say that if it were allowable to put the power saver before the retailers meters the story would be different.
    I considered that fitting a power saver made sense for the above reasons alone.
  37. Ranjanon 17 Jul 2011 at 9:22 pm37
    I had purchased a Power Saver a few months ago after listening to the salesman
    of claims of 30-40% savings in powe4r bill. It never worked and I disconnected it
    as I did not get reduced bill anytime. In fact I am sure it must be using a little power by itself as it has to be kept on continuously. Later I opened this unit to
    see if there is any circuitry of anything inside. To my astonishment I found nothing
    but a small capacitor inside, & the small indicator lights nothing else.
    So I am sure it must be a hoax. This is cheating. I could not get any claim on the
    equipment as I had purchased from a salesman at my door.

Some excellent discussions here. Been 20 years since I’ve seen such lively discussion on power factor. Like many on this thread I’m quite annoyed at the modern purveyors of power saving snake oil and especially the local current affairs programs that are, perhaps ignorantly, complicit in this rip-off. I am a professional engineer and despite knowing the reasons why these devices in their own right will _not_ save residential consumers money there does seem to be a few well meaning people claiming that they work. I think the reason for this is simple behavior modification. If you pay several hundred dollars for a plug in ‘power saving’ device I bet that’s happened after an unwelcome large bill and you are now likely to be prowling the house for unattended lights to be switched off: therein lies the power saving. Therefore, for anyone considering buying on of these energy saving placebos, save more than your power and buy a plug in _Energy Meter_ (about $30 at the electronics store), use that to spawn your power saving activities..
  42. Alion 29 Sep 2011 at 8:25 pm42
    I lost $400 for this scam. a caller introduced himself as an agent who work for the government in relation to a new released green energy rebate, saying that the federal government is offering this for every household, the device cost around $750 but its totally free of charge for you, you only need to pay a deposit of $400 for two devices that would reduce the electricity bill by %50, you recieve these devices throught the post office, and you pay $400 cash for them. and you get your money back after 90 days” this what I was told on the phone and thought that its a genuinely a government agency. So I went to the post office and paid $400.00 cash and received the package with one device, which would worth at most $20. Even within post office, I realised that it is a scam and asked them to give my money back, but they didn’t do that, saying we cannot do anything about that. This was redicolous, coz I thought the post office also cooperate with the scammers to ripoff people. Only in the post office I could find out that this is a scam, but Post office works in favour of scammer, while I haven’t left the post office yet, they didn’t give my money back.

  47. Mikeon 15 Dec 2011 at 12:21 pm47
    I got sold one of these from a cold call over the phone from “the electricity company” (I’m in the Uk) who started with “this being a free gift for my prompt regular payments of my bills but although it was free “gift” they just wanted to check my credit card details to make sure their records are correct. They gave me a London phone number so I could check them out. As the conversation progressed, it turned out that it was to cost me £99 but I would get this money back in 3 months. I realised it was a scam within about 5 seconds but they were oblivious to my constant laughter as I gave the most ridiculous answers to their questions.
    When they asked for my card details over the phone at the start of the call to check their records, I made up a totally fictitious 16 digit credit card number, expiry date and security number. An hour later they phoned back saying they were having trouble processing the payment (of my fictitious card details) could they check the details ? Somehow even though at that point I told them that I definitely wasn’t interested and would report them to the Police as it was so obviously a scam, it turned up in the post today with an invoice from ITS Corps in Florida but posted within the UK. Apologies to the poor guy who’s credit card details match the ones that I made up on the spur of the moment !
    Sadly. Some people obviously fall for this rubbish or they wouldn’t keep doing the cold call scam. “Neety”. You must work for one of them ? Don’t beleive a word. If these things actually worked and saved you money and energy use, I think we’d all have heard of them and the power companies would be selling them to us.
