MANILA, Philippines— Not only should you be on the look out during a flood, but you should also be prepared before and after it occurs.
As of today, the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services (PAGASA) reported a southwest monsoon affecting both Luzon and Visayas, which can cause heavy rains and strong winds.
Even though “DANTE”, the recent tropical cyclone, has left the Philippines, we should still be alert and prepared for floods that might occur especially during the rainy season.
Everyone should know what to do before, during and even after flooding occurs. There are specific tips to keep your family safe and dry.
Before a flood
When PAGASA forecasts a typhoon, make sure to be prepared for the flood that it may bring, even if you don't live in a flood-prone area.
Prepare for loss of electricity, phone lines, and local food and water sources for a long time. Therefore, you should have with you an emergency kit that will help you and your family survive.
This emergency kit should contain supplies for you and your family to last for about a week.
An emergency kit should contain medicines, first aid kit, canned goods, bottled water, battery powered radio, flashlight with extra batteries, candles and matches, sleeping bags, blankets, and extra clothing. You should also include emergency contact numbers, insurance policies and important family documents you would not want to be washed away by the flood.
If possible, have a multipurpose tool, water-purifying supplies, toiletries, umbrella, large garbage bags, whistle, and an evacuation plan. Put these items where you can easily find them.
During the flood
Make sure you stay informed by listening to the radio or watching the news for further updates, such as location of evacuation centers and traffic information.
Once the power goes out, disconnect all electrical appliances to keep you and your family safe from electrical shock if and when the power goes back.
Turn off main switches or valves of electricity, gas, and water. Do not touch any electrical object if you are in contact with water.
Avoid flood water for it may be contaminated with gasoline, hazardous bacteria or animal feces and urine. These factors can be harmful to the human body and may cause life-threatening diseases.
Another tip is to avoid walking through moving water. If there is a need to do so, make sure that the moving water is not above your ankles, if it is, then go another way because 6 inches of water can sweep you off your feet.
Never drive in flooded areas. A foot of water is capable of causing most vehicles to float, while 2 feet can carry away vehicles.
After a flood
If you and your family left your house, make sure you only return home once government officials have officially declared that it is safe to do so.
Make sure you clean your house thoroughly for it can be contaminated with dirty floodwater.
While cleaning up your house, wear protective clothing. Also, be cautious when turning on main switches and powered equipment.
Wash your hands frequently.
Use clean, disinfected water for cooking your food, drinking, and washing your feet.
Throwing away food that came in contact with floodwater is also a good idea.
Also, perishable food that was left inside the refrigerator during the power outage should be thrown away as well.
