UL Instrumentation & Control Cables

300V UL Instrumentation Cable

Cables with soft annealed bare or tinned copper conductors and PVC flame retardant insulations and jackets are the standard offering for 300V Power-limited tray instrumentation installation. Constructions with PVC/PVC that have three or more conductors and 20 AWG or larger conductors may also be used for direct burial installations.
As an option, Belden also offers all PVC insulated, PVC jacketed instrumentation cables - and several other insulation and jacket combinations - with a PLTC-ER (Exposed Run) rating, formerly referred to as Open Wiring. Per NEC Article 725, a PLTC-ER rated cable may be installed in an industrial establishment between a cable tray and the utilization equipment or device without the use of conduit. An ER rated cable must meet the crush and impact requirements of an armored cable, such as UL Type MC cable. By eliminating the need for metal conduit and/or armor, using a PLTC-ER rated cable results in installation and maintenance savings.
Other insulation and jacket options (including HaloarrestXLink jackets) in the UL Instrumentation Cable line are shown in the table below. All Belden cable jackets are resistant to sunlight, moisture and vapor penetration.

Shielding options, including unshielded, overall foil shielded and individually foil shielded/overall shielded configurations are available. Twisted non-shielded pairs and triads provide a minimal diameter allowing greater tray and conduit fill. Non-shielded instrumentation pairs may be utilized when recommended by the instrument manufacturer and used in a metallic conduit. Overall shields are recommended for use in instrumentation applications where signals are transmitted in excess of 100 millivolts, except in areas where high voltage and current sources create excessive noise interference. Belden's exclusive Beldfoil® shield with drain wire provides 100% coverage for maximum shield effectiveness. Individually shielded pairs or triads with an overall shield are recommended for use in instrumentation applications where optimum noise rejection is required. Individual pair/triad shields are fully isolated from each other and contain a separate drain wire for grounding, to provide maximum protection from crosstalk and common mode interference.
Belden also has the capability to protect electronic, instrumentation and control cables with interlocking or continuous armor, as well as smooth or corrugated protective metal tapes.
To complete the offering, a communication wire is included on all multi-pair/multi triad 1000 and 3000 series part numbers which consists of a 22 AWG Stranded (7x30) Bare Copper Conductor, and Orange PVC insulation. Custom configurations are also available.

600V UL Instrumentation Tray Cable

Cables with soft annealed bare or tinned copper conductors and with PVC-Nylon insulation, 90°C PVC Jacket, TFN, TFFN or THHN style singles and a Nylon rip cord in all PVC-Nylon/PVC versions are the standard offering for the 600V Tray cable category. These cables are used in wet or dry locations. The cable jackets are resistant to sunlight, moisture and vapor penetration. And, they can be used in raceways and (supported by messenger wire), outdoor applications and direct burial applications.
As an option, Belden also offers all PVC-Nylon/PVC, XLPE/PVC and XLPE/CPE jacketed tray cables with a TC-ER (Exposed Run) rating, formerly referred to as Open Wiring. Per NEC (2005) Article 336, a TC-ER rated cable may be installed in an industrial establishment between a cable tray and the utilization equipment or device. A TC-ER rated cable must meet the crush and impact requirements of UL Type MC cable. By eliminating the need for metal conduit and/or armor, using a TC-ER rated cable results in savings in both installation and maintenance.
Other insulation and jacket options in the UL Instrumentation Cable line are shown in the table below. All Belden cable jackets are resistant to sunlight, moisture and vapor penetration.

Thermocouple Extension Cable and Wire

The conductor material of thermocouple extension cable is determined by the thermocouple extension wire type. These cables are also FEP or PVC insulated with FEP or PVC jacket. A Nylon rip cord is included in all PVC-jacketed thermocouple extension cables. A communication wire is included on all multi-pair PVC constructions. The conductor material of a thermocouple wire is determined by the thermocouple type with FEP insulations and jacketed flat constructions. FEP thermocouple wire is impervious to chemical attack and is flame retardant.

Per NEC Article 336, a TC-ER rated cable may be installed in an industrial establishment between a cable tray and the utilization equipment or device without the use of conduit. A TC-ER rated cable must meet the crush and impact requirements of an armored cable, such as UL Type MC cable. By eliminating the need for metal conduit and/or armor, using a TC-ER rated cable results in savings in both installation and maintenance. Standard lengths may be subject to tolerance. Custom lengths may be available by request.

trianglesmalltrianglesmallTo specify TC-ER (Exposed Run) rated control cable, simply replace the second digit of the part number from a 7 to an 8. For example, 27080A with TC-ER rating becomes 28080A.

Note: All products are Indoor/Outdoor rated and sunlight-resistant. 1000V and 2000V ICEA-rated cables are available with a minimum order of 5000 ft. 2000V UL1277 TC cables are available with a minimum order of 5000 ft.
Belden UL Control Cables are typically offered in unshielded and overall shielded versions, with non-insulated, bare copper ground wires available for 8 through 1 AWG constructions. (Non-insulated, bare copper, full sized ground wires may be requested on other constructions.) All shielded PVC-Nylon/PVC constructions include drain wires for easy shield termination.
Unshielded cables may be utilized when recommended by the equipment manufacturer and used in a metallic conduit. These cables provide a minimal OD, allowing greater tray and conduit fill. Overall shielded cables are recommended for use in control applications where signals are transmitted in excess of 100 millivolts, except in areas where high voltage and current sources create excessive noise interference. Belden's Beldfoil shield with drain wire provides 100% coverage for maximum shield effectiveness. A copper tape shield is available upon request.
Multi-conductor control cables (10 AWG to 18 AWG) are color coded per ICEA Table E2.
AWG and larger constructions are black and numbered per ICEA Method 4.
Belden UL Control cable can be installed in cable trays, ducts and conduit, plus it is suitable for installation in wet or dry locations as the cable jackets are resistant to sunlight, moisture and vapor penetration. These cables can also be used in raceways (supported by messenger wire), outdoor applications and direct burial installations. They are used extensively in manufacturing facilities - especially in the process industries such as petrochemical, steel, pulp and paper, cement and mining.
