BULACAN – Workers of the chemical plant where an explosion occurred two nights ago maintained that lightning caused the blast which ripped through surrounding houses in Barangay Loma de Gato, Marilao, Bulacan.
Community affairs officers of the Bulacan Provincial Social Welfare and Development (PSWD) Office arrived in Marilao shortly before Thursday noon as part of the inquiry being conducted.
According to Pasencia Morado of Bulacan PSWD, 32 houses were damaged by the blast.
Morado and another PSWD officer entered the facility and talked to the owners of the facility who gave the assurance that they will shoulder the expenses for the repair of the houses that were damaged.
Morado told reporters that they were also able to talk to a plant supervisor. The plant supervisor claimed that he is a stay-in employee and was at the facility when the blast occurred.
"Eh sabi nga nila, tinamaan ng kidlat. Ito ‘yung supervisor ang nagpapatunay. Nakita daw niyang tinamaan," said Morado.
Raffy Buenvenida is living in a warehouse that is adjacent to the chemical plant. He said there was a heavy downpour that night and they were already sleeping when he was roused by a loud explosion.
"Akala ko eroplano ‘yung bumagsak sa bubong namin kasi yupi-yupi ang yero pati bakal eh," said Buenvenida.
The police, however, is not convinced that the incident was due to force majeure.
The Chief of Marilao Police Station, Superintendent Gerardo Andaya, told ABS-CBN News that none in the neighborhood was able to attest that lightning struck the plant to corroborate the statement of plant workers.
One worker claimed that prior to the incident, there was unusual heat coming from one of the tanks, he said.
The matter was supposedly immediately reported to the faculty engineer, but before any action can be made, an explosion already occurred.
"Hindi natin malaman kung dahil sa kidlat kasi ang sabi nung isa sa tao dun, hinipo niya, mainit, so may pressure, sumabog," said Andaya.
