| Haslingden bricklayer was killed by lightning 1:34pm Friday 28th September 2012 in News By Peter Magill, Chief reporter Justin Feber A FATHER-of-one from East Lancashire died as the result of a lightning strike on a Cheshire building site, a coroner has confirmed. Bricklayer Justin Feber, 41, was working on a housing project in Crewe, drinking a cup of tea, when he fell victim to the one-in-10,000-chance bolt. The Haslingden man was not touching anything metallic when the incident occurred, the Lancashire Telegraph reported at the time. Colleagues immediately rushed to the stricken man s aid, it was said, and attempted first aid. Paramedics also attempted resuscitation and he was transferred to the nearby Leighton Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. Another man, who also suffered a shock, was also taken to the South Cheshire hospital, but later recovered. Mr Feber, known as Feebs to friends, was working as a sub-contractor for Chorley-based Matthews and Leigh Civil Engineering at the time, on a Bovis Homes development at Wychwood Village, in the Weston suburb of Crewe. Recording a narrative verdict, Cheshire s assistant deputy coroner Dr Geoffrey Roberts said that Mr Feber was struck by lightning which led to his death . Mr Feber, of Langwood Court, was the son of former Rossendale United FC chairman Jack Feber and his wife Carol. He also left a nine-year-old daughter, Libby, partner Karen, and brother Jason. The former Bacup and Rawtenstall Grammar School student was well known in the Rawtenstall and Waterfoot areas, and played Sunday league football for the Boot and Shoe pub. His funeral service, at St Nicholas Church, in Newchurch, was attended by scores of mourners. | ||||||||

| The 11-year-old, who is believed to be a pupil at the Dorcan Academy in Swindon, was injured shortly after 3pm today. The boy received medical attention from staff at the school and Great Western Ambulance Service after going into cardiac arrest. A spokesman for the Great Western Ambulance Service, said: "We received a call at 3.10pm today reporting that a young lad, believed to be an 11-year-old pupil at the Dorcan Academy in St Paul's Drive, Swindon had been struck by lightning. RELATED ARTICLES "We had a paramedic in a rapid response vehicle on scene at 3.16pm and an ambulance crew a couple of minutes later. "In the meantime, while we were on route, we understand the better trained first aiders from the school were providing CPR because the patient had in affect been electrocuted and gone into cardiac arrest. "Our paramedics took over treatment when they arrived on scene. They got a heart beat and him breathing for himself again on scene." He added: "He is in a potentially life-threatening condition. The quick response from school staff and paramedics gave him the best chance of survival." FRIENDS of schoolboy Joe Compton, who is in hospital after being struck by lightning, have set up a donation page to help support him and his family. Eleven-year-old Joe, a pupil at Dorcan Academy, was in the car park of the secondary school on Wednesday afternoon when he suffered a heart attack following the freak incident. Workers at Dorcan Recreation Centre rushed to his aid and performed emergency CPR before paramedics arrived and took him to Great Western Hospital. He has since been transferred to Frenchay Hospital and is now said to be in a stable condition. Friends say he is making progress every day but still has a long way to go. Since the incident, a Facebook group has been set up entitled Get Well Wishes For Joe Compton where they have been leaving their own messages of support, wishing the youngster a full and speedy recovery. | CARACAS (Reuters) - Firefighters extinguished a blaze in a fuel storage tank at Venezuela's El Palito refinery, state oil company PDVSA said on Saturday. The fire was started by a lightning bolt during a storm Wednesday night, but the 146,000 barrel-per-day (bpd) El Palito facility continued operating. Two tanks were initially set alight, but the fire in one was put out within hours. In a statement, PDVSA said the blaze in the second storage tank was completely extinguished late on Friday. No one was hurt in Wednesday night's lightning strike. The second refinery accident in a month has increased concerns about state oil company PDVSA's safety record and practices ahead of an October 7 presidential election. In August, PDVSA halted almost all output at the country's biggest refinery, Amuay, for six days after a gas leak caused an explosion that killed 42 people. PDVSA has suffered a string of accidents, outages and unplanned stoppages for maintenance across its refinery network in recent years, hurting the OPEC nation's vital fuel exports. | Two killed, 11 injured in lightning strike in Chhattisgarh Raipur, Sep 21 (IANS) Two people, including a girl student, were killed and 11 others injured in a lightning strike in Chhattisgarh's Kanker district, around 125 km from here, police said Friday. "Two persons - a girl student and an old woman - were killed and 11 students injured when lightning struck near Markatola Higher Secondary School in Narharpur block, around 15 km from district headquarters Kanker, Thursday afternoon," superintendent of police Rahul Bhagat said. According to school authorities, the lightning struck around 1.45 p.m. as soon as the bell for lunch was sounded and students rushed out. Class 10 student Sandhya Kunjam (15) and Rajbai (65) were killed, while 11 other students were injured. All the injured, six of whom are stated to be in serious condition, were rushed to hospital. | Purnia: Lightning claimed 11 lives while over 18 persons were seriously injured including women and children, when it struck different villages across Purnia district on Tuesday afternoon. While lightning killed three persons each under Banmankhi and Dhamdaha subdivisions, one each lost their lives at Barharakothy, Kasba, Gulabbagh, Amour and Dagarua under Purnia and Baisi subdivisions. The lightning struck when it was pouring very heavily on Tuesday afternoon, official sources said. Lightning struck a school teacher, Dilip Paswan, of Araria district when he was attending the cremation of a woman at Jeevachpur village under Parsahi panchayat under Banmankhi subdivision. Over half-a-dozen persons, who were injured in the lightning at the cremation ground, were admitted to the primary health centre (PHC) at Banmankhi, official sources said. Banmankhi SDO Manoj Kumar Jha, confirming three deaths under the subdivision, said some of the injured persons were later shifted to Sadar Hospital, Purnia. Others killed in Banmankhi included Muneshwari Devi, 50, at Narayanpur and Neha Parveen, 18, at Gudiya Madarsa tola. Among those who were killed by the lightning were three girls Pooja Kumari, Neha Parveen and Fekni Kumari besides Suman Kumar, Rajiv Kumar Das and Nitish Kumar. A sexagenarian, Mohd Mujib, too, lost his life when lightning struck Amour. Quite a few of those injured are being treated at Sadar Hospital, Purnia. | NORTH STONINGTON, Conn. The Mashantucket Pequot Tribe has paid an $11,600 fine and made safety changes at its Lake of Isles golf course after a lightning strike in June injured 15 workers. The workers were hurt when lightning hit near a wooden restroom building where they were taking shelter from the June 25 storm. None of the injuries was serious. Archie Cart, the course's general manager, tells the Day of New London the tribe and manager Troon Golf agreed to a settlement with the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration on Aug. 30. He says the safety changes include the installation of lightning-tracker software that will enable management to know when lightning is within 30 miles and get people off the course and into the main clubhouse. | I wrote recently about an Austin man and two companions who survived a lightning strike while backpacking near Mount Whitney in California. The article (read it here) spurred a response from Donna Franklin, who leads the National Weather Service s Lightning Safety Awareness Program. Every year we see the same thing over and over: Men who are enjoying the great outdoors when a thunderstorm moves in and they make bad decisions which lead to death or injury, Franklin said. Of the 24 deaths due to lightning strikes so far in 2012, three have occurred in Texas. The Lone Star State is tied with Florida for the most lightning related deaths. Franklin says following some basic safety rules can prevent lightning deaths. She shared these tips for people stuck in the backcountry during a storm: 1. Know and pay attention to local weather patterns. Change your plans if thunderstorms are predicted. Set turn-around times that will get you off exposed terrain before afternoon storms pop up. If you hear thunder, lightning is close enough to strike and you should head to safe terrain. 2. Lightning tends to hit high points and the surrounding area. Avoid peaks, ridges and higher ground during a thunderstorm. If your tent is on a ridge or near a tree, get out and move to safer terrain until the storm passes. 3. Avoid trees and bushes that that are taller than others. Look for a ravine or depression before a storm hits. If you re with a group, spread out at 20-foot intervals to reduce the risk of multiple injuries. Never huddle together. 4. Most lightning deaths are caused by ground current. GEORGETOWN, Guyana, Friday September 21, 2012 After an intensive two-day search operation, the body of Daniel Collinet, a boat captain who was struck by lightning on Monday afternoon, has been recovered by police and regional authorities. Collinet s badly burnt body was found on Wednesday morning in the Essequibo River in the vicinity of Wolga. He had been missing since the tragedy occurred while he was ferrying schoolchildren home from Bartica. According to Region Seven Chairman Gordon Bradford, regional officials had recovered the body and it had been positively identified by Collinet s relatives. He added that the deceased had suffered massive burns. The deadly incident reportedly took place in bad weather around 4:00 pm on Monday when Collinet was struck by a lightning bolt and plunged overboard. The schoolchildren aboard the vessel reportedly scanned the water to locate him, but were rewarded by no more than the sight of the charred life jacket that the captain had been wearing, floating in the river. One of the students, 13-year-old Marco Klass, was also shocked, burnt, and pitched into the river during the incident. The youngster fortunately managed to swim back to the boat and was pulled to safety by his schoolmates. The boy was subsequently rushed to the Bartica Hospital and later transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH) where he was said to be recovering from the ordeal. | JACKSONVILLE (KYTX) - A warning about the danger of lightning after a strike near four East Texans sent them to the hospital. The lighting struck the parking lot at Fred Douglass Elementary School in Jacksonville, affecting three teachers and a young child. The four patients are doing just fine. They were treated and released with minor injuries Thursday. Doctors say they're lucky. Injuries from lighting can range from minor shock to death. With more storms on the way through East Texas, experts are warning you to be very careful if you're outside during a storm. Emergency Room Physician D. Thomas Curtis has treated many patients affected by lightning, and Thursday, he added four more to that list. "Three were in a car that had a near strike with lightning and one was another patient who was outside with an umbrella raised, barefoot and did actually get some lightning strike and had a sensation of electrical shock," Curtis says. The Jacksonville ISD Superintendent says the lightning struck a puddle in the parking lot, and electricity was conducted through the water. That's why the teacher standing barefoot in the water, holding a metal umbrella -- felt a strong electrical shock. Injuries from lightning can be minor, but more often, they're severe. "You can receive electrical burns, that are actually thermal burns that can burn through the body, and cause major tissue damage. You can sustain arrhythmia where your heart actually stops beating because of the electrical shock and those would be potentially life threatening," Curtis says. With rain and storms expected to continue on a Friday, it's football coaches and trainers who are making sure their fans and students are safe from the lightning and they do that with a device called a Thunderbolt. It's a small device that tracks how far away the lighting is, and if there's any danger they tell everyone to get inside. Grace Community High School Head Football Coach Mike Maddox says, "It will determine if the lightning is 5-8 miles away or if it's 3-5 miles away of if it's 1-3 miles." When lightning is 3-5 miles away, coaches blow their whistles and send everyone inside. "You just can't take chances.," Maddox says. "We can replay a ball game. There are plenty of ball games in life but we can't take chances with peoples' health and peoples' lives." At those football games, when lightning gets close enough, the game is put on hold for 30 minutes. In that time if lightning strikes again, they have to wait another 30 minutes. If you are outside at a place like a football field when there is lightning, experts say you should not take cover under bleachers. They are metal and that is very dangerous. You want to go inside a building, or if you can't get inside, the next safest place is your car where it's insulated. Experts also say you don't want to be under what experts call an "anntenae," meaning a tall tree in a flat field, or a single tractor in a pasture. If you are near the only tall object around, you are more likely to become a target for a lightning strike. | ||||||||

| Marines hit by lightning during desert training By Gidget Fuentes - Staff writer Posted : Wednesday Sep 12, 2012 17:32:33 EDT Two Marines were injured Tuesday night in a lightning strike at the Marine Corps desert training facility in Twentynine Palms, Calif. Neither has been identified, but Marine officials said both were participating in Enhanced Mojave Viper pre-deployment exercises at the time of the incident. They were taken by air ambulance to Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs, where they were treated for shock and non-life threatening injuries, said 1st Lt. Sin Carrano, a spokesman for the Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center. The Marines have since been released back to their unit and will be monitored by their leadership to ensure their well-being, Carrano said. A Navy corpsman rushing to the Marines' aid also was slightly hurt after slipping in the steep terrain and falling down a side of the mountain, Carrano said. The corpsman was treated at the Twentynine Palms Naval Hospital and was released Wednesday afternoon. The lightning strike came as a line of thunderstorms moved across the Mojave Desert late Tuesday. Mutara ward councillor John Kinyua said the boy, Irungu Kabutu, was sheltering from rain on a verandah of a house when he was hit by the lightning. He said Irungu was grazing his father's cows and when the rain fell, he took cover ata neighbour's home. "The house owner was inside and when he came out after the thunderstorm, he found the boy writhing in pain. "All the things he was going to do along with David, he has to do without one of the most important people in his life," she said. David died last summer after he was struck by lightning while at a Boy Scout camping trip near Scofield. The boys mothers spoke out Tuesday in a news conference with their attorney. The families are suing the Boy Scouts of America and the organization s Orem-based National Parks Council, alleging they failed to follow their own rules for lightning safety. "There is a great hole in my heart that will never be filled. I miss my son every day, and his three brothers miss him," said Connie Rayborn, tears in her eyes. A Boy Scouts of America spokesman declined to comment on the specific allegations in the suit Tuesday, but said in a statement the "health and safety of our youth members is a top priority." "Our thoughts and prayers continue to go out to the families and all who are affected by this tragic accident," said Deron Smith via email, adding that leaders "work tirelessly to help ensure the safety and well-being of our members." But the mothers said Tuesday no one told the boys where to go when the storm rolled in to Scofield Scout Camp at Frandsen Scout Ranch on July 13, 2011. "It was sort of every man or boy for himself during this lightning storm, and it shouldn t be that way," said attorney Ron Kramer. story continues belowstory continues below Sean and David were playing horseshoes during a free time period when it started to rain and hail. It wasn t the first storm of their trip, which occurred during the southern Utah monsoon season. Instead of instructing the boys to take shelter in a permanent mess hall 100 feet away, as outlined in the Guide to Safe Scouting, the group scattered, Kramer said Tuesday. While some sought shelter in cars, a group of Scouts and adults headed up the ridge line. Sean, who has asthma, fell behind. David slowed to walk with him to the campsite. Hiking alone, the boys were within 30 feet of a lean-to structure at the campsite when lightning struck David in the chest and indirectly struck Sean. Both boys lost consciousness. Sean awoke to find David about 10 feet away and ran to the lean-to for help. When no one could revive David, his body was placed in an ambulance with Sean. "If they had gone into the mess hall instead of hiking to the top of the ridge, my son would be here with me," Rayborn said. The five-day excursion to Scofield was the boy s first Scout camping trip. David had been a Scout since age 8, Sean since age 10. The 25 boys were chaperoned by parent volunteers and three local leaders called to the job by their Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints ward. The families have no plans to sue the church, and fault the Boy Scouts for not adequately preparing local leaders to deal with lightning risks. "I feel Scout leaders were just as misinformed as we were," Smith said. Rayborn said Boy Scout officials told her about her son s death, but stopped communicating when she asked for their reports on his death the following month. His best friend, Sean Smith, 12, was also struck by lightning and injured but survived. The wrongful death suit is the second filed against the Boy Scouts of America in Utah since July. The boys and their leaders sought shelter from a hailstorm "on top of a ridge," rather than inside the mess hall that was 100 feet away, the families contend. The civil lawsuit was filed in 4th District Court in Provo by the families of the two boys struck by lightning. In the suit, the parents say the Scout leaders on that day failed to recognize the safety risks of taking the boys camping in an area where there had been a lot of thunderstorm activity and where they would potentially be exposed to lightning. The camp health officer "knew, or should have known, that there was no safe place in the outdoors from lightning and that the only completely safe action for the Scouts and their leaders is to get inside a safe building or vehicle at the very first sign of thunder, lightning, or dark threatening clouds overhead," the lawsuit states. Not all the leaders who were with the Scouts that day "were adequately trained to recognize and adequately respond to hazardous weather conditions," the lawsuit states. The boys and their leaders sought shelter from a hailstorm "on top of a ridge," rather than inside the mess hall that was 100 feet away, the families contend. David and Sean were slower than the rest to climb to the top of the ridge because of Sean's asthma. David "didn't want to leave his friend," according to the lawsuit, and stayed with him. They were 30 feet from the campsite when David was struck directly in the chest by lightning. Sean was not directly struck but was knocked over by the blast. Sean still suffers dizziness, memory loss, depression, fatigue, back pain and post-traumatic stress disorder due to the incident, according to court records. The lawsuit contends the National Parks Council and the Boy Scouts had information that storms were in the forecast, that the area where the Scouts were camping had been hit by lightning for the past seven days prior to David and Sean's arrival, and that the camps on top of ridges were "defectively placed" in an area that tended to attract lightning. The Boy Scouts of America requires Scout leaders of outdoor activities to receive online training about lightning safety. David was one of two Boy Scouts who died in Utah on that day. | LAKELAND - A 16-year-old apparently struck by lightning on Friday died Tuesday, the Polk County Sheriff's Office said. James Pinkstaff was with his family outside their home at 8114 Osborne Lane in north Lakeland loading items into a U-Haul trailer when it started to rain. James went to cover his motorized dirt bike, which he kept under an oak tree, deputies said. His mother, Angela Rock, told deputies she heard a loud boom, then found her son on the ground. James was taken to Lakeland Regional Medical Center, and died Tuesday night from his injuries, Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Donna Wood said. Christina Burk, 24, his cousin who lives down the street, said she heard the thunder and went outside to check on her children. She said she heard her aunt screaming and ran down the street to help. She and other neighbors performed CPR on James until Emergency Medical Services arrived. The Sheriff's Office is conducting a death investigation, and the Medical Examiner's Office will perform an autopsy to determine the cause of death, Wood said. The teen and his mother lived with relatives at the home. James was home-schooled and, Burk said, he liked outdoor activities like fishing. She said James frequently visited her house. She said he liked joking around and would play video games with her two children. "He was a big sweetheart and had a big heart," she said. Burk said the family was organizing funeral arrangements Wednesday. "He's a great person," she said. "His life was cut way too short." According to the National Weather Service's website, an average of 54 people died annually between 1981 and 2010 because of injuries from a lightning strike. The odds of being struck by lightning in a lifetime is one out of 775,000. The Polk County Fire Rescue spokesman Brad Ruhmann recommends "if it roars, go indoors." | DEMAREST Despite sunny skies, 71-year-old Viktor Ovsyankin of Haworth was killed in a lightning strike on the campus of the Northern Valley Regional High School at Demarest late Friday afternoon. A tree to the right of the school building, near a soccer practice field, was stripped clear of its bark on one side as a result of strike. It is not clear at this time if the lightning struck the man directly or if debris from the tree had fallen on the man, said Police Chief James Powderley III. First responders on the scene saw physical signs that led them to believe the man was struck by both the lightning and the debris, but the official cause will not be available until the autopsy report is completed, said Powderley. Ovsyankin was visiting the campus to watch his grandson, a freshman at the school, play soccer. At approximately 4:15 p.m., the Demarest Police Department received multiple 911 calls saying a man was possibly struck by lightning in the south soccer field, said Powderley. Police arrived on the scene to administer first aid to Ovsyankin, who was then airlifted to Hackensack University Medical Center, said Powderley. The hospital pronounced Ovsyankin dead at approximately 8:46 p.m., said Powderley. The lightning began during a soccer game between Northern Valley Regional and Packsack Valley High School. More than 100 students were on the field at the time of the lightning strike. Powderley, who had already been on the campus at the time speaking to administrators, said the lightning came out of nowhere, as the skies were clear at the time. "It sounded like a large explosion," said Powderley. "Even at that time, we weren t even sure what it was." Students were evacuated into the south gym of the high school for safety purposes. | By Andrew Scott Pocono Record Writer September 06, 2012 An employee at Stauffer Concrete Products and Excavating in Kunkletown was injured Wednesday morning when lightning hit the storage building he was in at the time, the business' bookkeeper said. The employee was in contact with a metal table inside the building when lightning struck at about 8:30 a.m., said bookkeeper Jim Henderson. The employee, whose name Henderson declined to release, was conscious and alert but in great pain when taken by ambulance to the hospital. Henderson said he was working in a separate building housing the business office when he heard the sizzle of lightning hitting the storage building. Henderson said he was thinking he needed to power down his computer when other workers rushed in and told him to call 911. "When I asked why, they said we had an employee down," he said. "So, I called 911, told one employee to go watch for the ambulance and told another to man the phones. "I then ran over to the storage building and found the employee on the ground. He was able to respond to me, but was in obvious pain. I made him as comfortable as I could until the ambulance arrived." The employee's condition was unavailable Wednesday night. The lightning strike came as a turbulent storm front, the remnants of Hurricane and then Tropical Storm Isaac, moved through the region Tuesday night into Wednesday, dumping torrents of rain, spreading debris on roads and giving the air a musty heavy feel for morning commuters. According to Pocono weather expert Ben Gelber, the National Weather Service received two reports of 5.94 inches of rain measured seven miles northeast of Stroudsburg and 5.75 inches five miles to the west. Bill Hamilton of Neola said his rain gauge showed 6.75 inches as of noon Wednesday. The man, from Marsascala, was in a field in Triq il-Blajjiet in Marsacala with another man, when he was struck by a bolt of lightening, a police spokesperson confirmed. The ambulance service said it treated one person for a suspected electric shock and another for hearing damage in the Pontprennau area. | EASTHAM, Mass. (WHDH) -- On Tuesday morning, a woman was gripping an umbrella as she exited a car to shield her from the heavy downpour. Just as she picked up her 4-year-old granddaughter, lightning struck, hitting them both. It s almost like a pain in your arm, and then my arm just started shaking said Beth Caldwell. Caldwell said she was struck by lightning when she was holding her granddaughter, Sophia, in one arm and an umbrella in the other. So I got the one over there and put her in my arms and the umbrella and then I got hit through my right arm, said Caldwell. Like a shotgun, it was a big loud bang, and all the sudden out of my periphery I saw the spark, said Chris Samios, the woman s son-in-law, who witnessed the strike. Caldwell and Sophia were then rushed to Cape Cod Hospital. I wasn t really aware of anything but getting the baby away from me cause I knew I was hit. So when I fell in, I said to them, I m hit, I ve been hit by lightning, Caldwell said. The way she described it was that it was an intense pain, more than a shock in her hand and then all the sudden she felt her arm go limp down her side and she felt something shoot down through her body and her heart would not stop racing, said Chris Samios. The 4-year-old was fine, but was checked out for precautionary purposes. I freaked out. We were all like in shock. We were shocked, said the woman s daughter, Maggie Samios. Neighbors in the area gave the same description of what they saw and heard. The flash was instantaneous. It was completely bright. Then the thunder, the clap was enormous, said Todd Easton. A heating and air conditioning repairman said the lightning also knocked out all the power in the Samios' vacation home. It was definitely hit by lightning. It got hit pretty hard. Everything electrical in it was fried, said Richard Toma. I feel so lucky, it s unbelievable, said Chris Samios. She was hit by lightning and is fine. After the ordeal, Caldwell smiled and even joked about her clash with Mother Nature. You can have after effects up to three years but I m supposed to check with my regular doctor. But I m fine. They said that I look better because of it, Caldwell joked. | What Happens When You Get Struck By Lightning Andrew Tarantola The human body simply isn't built to conduct 300kV of electricity. So when things backfire while you're fishing in a thunderstorm, and you find yourself doing an impromptu rendition of Powder, here's what you can expect. While there is still debate within the scientific community as to the exact nature of the process, most believe that cloud-to-ground lightning originates when conditions within a thunder head strip electrons from rising water vapor to create an electrical field. Free electrons gather at the bottom of the cloud while positive ions move to the top. This electrical field is so intense that the negative electrons in the cloud repel electrons on the ground. These ground-level other electrons get pushed far enough into the strata that the surface of the planet becomes positively charged. Once that occurs, air molecules around the cloud ionize, discharging the electrical field via a short-circuit back to Earth, neutralizing the charge difference. That's lightning and you don't want to be anywhere near it when it strikes. Humans are good conductors. Being comprised of atoms that can transmit electrons is great for our neural network's basic functionality. But it's very bad when we drop a hairdryer in the tub, crack open an industrial capacitor, or become a human lightning rod on the links. Lightning strikes do, however, differ from the industrial shocks you'd receive from high-voltage equipment. First, the level of voltage is greater in lightning most industrial shocks generate 20-60kV, but a bolt of lightning generates 300kV. Second, the duration of a lightning strike is much shorter. Man-made shocks last about a half second (500 miliseconds), on average, until the worker is either blown clear or the circuit breaker trips. A lightning strike courses through you in in just 3 milliseconds. Finally, most industrial electrical injuries hit the worker's hands, arms, and shoulders while natural lightning most often strikes the head, shoulders, and upper torso. When a bolt of lightning does strike a human frame, very bad things happen. In addition to the 300kV of energy coursing through you, the power of the strike heats the surrounding air to 50,000 degrees F, causing third degree burns at the bolt's entry and exit points. It can also create lightning bolt-shaped burn marks, called Lichtenberg figures, which are caused by bursting blood vessels. The heat and force can singe and shred clothing. Lightning strikes have blown people clear out of their shoes. The damage can be even worse if you are holding a metal object. For one thing, doing so increases the likelihood of being struck in the first place. A big reason Florida leads the nation in annual lightning-related deaths and injuries (126 deaths in the last decade alone) isn't from regional topography but due to the state's vibrant golf industry. Legions of players frantically break out the nine irons to finish the round ahead of an oncoming storm. Second, wearing metal objects while chains, necklaces, braces...piercings can cause electrical arcing and rapidly heat, causing serious burns of their own. Burns aren't the only way lightning will hurt you. A lightning strike can act as a massive fibrillator, upsetting the heart's electrical rhythm and causing cardiac arrest. That's in addition to bursting blood vessels and damaging the cardiac muscles. Fortunately, only one in ten Americans have died from being struck by lightning in the three decades between 1981 and 2010. That period saw 54 fatalities a year on average, though between 2001 and 2010, that number dropped to 39 annually. Ninety percent of lightning strike victims do survive, but at a significant cost. "Lightning injuries are varied and take many different forms," wrote Dr. Elisabeth Gourbière of the Electricité de France, Service des Etudes Médicales in Lightning Injuries to Humans in France. "The most dangerous (and possibly fatal) immediate complications are cardiovascular and neurologic. It must be kept in mind that only immediate and effective cardiorespiratory resuscitation (started by rescuers), followed as soon as possible by emergency medical treatment, can save victims who are in cardiopulmonary arrest, or avert the serious consequences of cerebral hypoxia. Some victims remain in a coma despite intensive resuscitation and die of secondary causes including hemorrhages and multiple lesions (encephalic, cardiac, pulmonary, intra-abdominal)." Immediate post-strike symptoms can include caridac arrhythmia, myocardial damage, and pulmonary edema in the circulatory system. Neurologically, you will likely lose consciousness for anywhere from a few minutes to a few years. You could suffer brain damage (because in the cellular structure of your brain literally cooks from the current) resulting in short-term memory loss or amnesia. Longer term neurological maladies include personality changes, learning disabilities, sleep disorders, seizures, Parkansonism (not actual Parkinson's Disease but a similar constant twitch). Last, victims commonly report numbness and weakness in the limbs, temporary or permanent paralysis, concussions, blown ear drums, cataracts, and a whole lot of pain. | ||||||||

This leader grows downwards and at the same time, an oppositely charged leader grows upwards from the ground. When the leaders connect, a huge current (typically 30,000 amps) flows down this ionized channel. Seawater, unlike air, is a good conductor as it contains salt. Rather than creating an irregular narrow, ionised path, the charge from the lightning strike spreads out sideways and downwards in an expanding half sphere from the surface. Now his friends and family are remembering him. He was known by his friends as "The Catfish King of the Northeast Cape Fear River." Sunday, Timothy "Timbo" Godwin, 50, died doing what he loved. "if he wasn't working, we were here," Godwin's fiancée Brooke said. "I should have been here Sunday, but I didn't want to come. I tried to get him to stay in bed with me, matter of fact, and he was like, 'No, gotta catch that catfish.'" Godwin was a well known fisherman in Castle Hayne. His friends say he caught the biggest catfish they'd ever seen. Godwin's best friend and fishing buddy George Caison spent many hours on the dock on the river. Caison was with Godwin Sunday. "It started to sprinkle, so I went to the truck, and he said he was going to get his raincoat," Caison said. "I sat down in the truck and heard one lightning bolt. It was real loud. I jumped about a foot. When I got out of the van about five minutes later, I found him laying on the ground." Godwin was struck by lightning through a tree and electrocuted. His fiancée says she is lost without her other half, but she finds comfort in knowing that Godwin helped save others. "It was a tragedy; a big one, 'cause I know his mama taught him to get in out of the rain, but he was a donor," Brooke said. "We decided for him to be a donor, and he did save lives. He was able to give his liver, his kidneys and his heart." A memorial service for Godwin is tomorrow at 6 p.m. at Coble Ward-Smith Funeral Home in Wilmington. | ||||||||

| BHOPAL: A student of an engineering college died and his pillion rider - a girl- sustained severe burns, when lightning struck them near Bharoot area close to by-pass road at Satna district on Tuesday, police said. The deceased, identified as Manoj Shukla (21), is a resident of Allahabad in UP and was a BE final year student of a local private college. The girl, aged 18, was pursuing a nursing course and hails from Shastri Nagar in Sidhi district of MP, police said. Both fell victim to lightning, when they were going out of the city limits on a motorbike. Manoj died on the spot while the girl had been admitted to that district hospital where her condition is stated to be critical, police sources said. | ||||||||
