Power and Control Cable

Power and Control Cable is primarily used in the electric utility, industrial and commercial market place.
Key activities include:
  • Participating in the Wire and Cable Division Safety, Health, and Environmental Committee
  • Participating in statistical reports (S-636 Report and S-638 Report)
  • Publishing joint standards with Insulated Cable Engineers Association (ICEA)
  • Developing new industry packaging requirements and revising existing industry bar code standards
  • Maintaining liaisons with the Insulated Cable Engineers Association (ICEA), American National Standards Institute (ANSI), American Society Testing Materials (ASTM), National Fire Prevention Association (NFPA), and Underwriters Laboratories (UL)
Scope
  • All types of solid dielectric insulated wires and cables including thermosetting (XLPE and rubber) and thermoplastic, single and multiconductor, jacketed, sheathed, or armored for power and control applications.
  • The portable power cable group, which includes mining and earth moving machinery cable involving insulated cable used in power supply applications with mining and dredging machinery.
  • Portable power cables and electric vehicle charging cables
Please see the section scopes document, available in the right call-out area, for more information.
Technical Activities
  • Standards play a vital part in the design, production, and distribution of products destined for both national and international commerce. Sound technical standards benefit the user, as well as the manufacturer, by improving safety, bringing about economies in product, eliminating misunderstandings between manufacturer and purchaser, and assisting the purchaser in selecting and obtaining the proper product for his particular need.
NEMA devotes much of its time, effort, and resources to voluntary standardization activities. Many NEMA standards are approved as American National Standards under the procedures of the American National Standards Institute. The section supports the ANSI C8 Wire and Cable Committee secretariat.
    1. The section is responsible for a number of joint standards with the Insulating Cables Engineers Association (ICEA):
WC 50/ICEA P-53-426 Ampacities, Including Effect of Shield Losses for Single-Conductor Solid-Dielectric Power Cable 15 kV thru 69 kV
ANSI WC 51/ICEA P-54-440 Ampacities of Cables in Open-Top Cable Trays
ANSI WC 53/ICEA T 27-581 Standard Test Methods for Extruded Dielectric Power, Control, Instrumentation & Portable Cables
ANSI WC 54/ICEA T-26-465 Guide for Frequency of Sampling Extruded Dielectric Power, Control, Instrumentation & Portable Cables for Test
ANSI WC 57/ICEA S-73-532 Standard for Control Cables
WC 58/ICEA S-75-381 Standard for Portable & Power Feeder Cables voltage cables for industrial applications.for Use in Mines & Similar Applications
ANSI WC 70/ICEA S-95-658 Nonshielded Power Cables Rated 2000 Volts or Less
ANSI WC 71/ICEA S-96-659 Standard for Nonshielded Cables Rated 2001-5000 Volts for Use in the Distribution of Electric Energy
ANSI WC 74/ICEA S-93-639 Standard for Shielded Power Cables 5.000-46,000 Volts for the Distribution of Electric Energy

The section also maintains the bi-national wire and cable packaging standard
    - WC 26/EEMAC 201 Binational wire and cable packaging standard
    2. Section members are involved in a number of UL standards such as UL 1072 UL for medium
    3. The section supports a CANENA harmonization effort for the wires and cables testing methods standard UL 2556. It also started in 2005 an effort to harmonize the medium voltage cables standard UL 1072 with its Canadian counterpart.
    4. The section is active in the Power and Control IEC TC20 committee. A number of the member companies are members of the IEC TC20 US Technical Advisory Group (TAG) that advises the US National Committee of positions it should take on specific technical issues raised in the committee work. Section members volunteer for US Expert positions in the TC 20 Working Groups. The section also supports NEMA as a secretary of the US TAG.
    5. The section is involved with the cyclical reaffirmation of the National Electrical Code by making and evaluating proposals in the area of its product responsibility.

Government Affairs
Through NEMA, the section develops industry positions on legislative and regulatory initiatives that may affect member products, markets, and customers. NEMA's work has resulted in contributions to public policy development and in promoting competitiveness, technological progress, and public safety. On the Government Affairs homepage members can search for and e-mail federal representatives to convey opinions regarding energy policy or other issues related to the electroindustry.
NEMA Government Affairs provides specific services to its members and information in the areas of Environment, Health & Safety; Energy; and International Trade & Commerce.
Market Economics
Through NEMA, member companies are able to develop and implement tailored, industry-specific market and statistical programs that benefit participating companies. Reports may include:
  • Product orders and sales
  • Market forecasting
  • Shipments by trading areas
  • Channels of distribution
  • Financial and operating ratios
  • Wages and benefits
  • Foreign trade
The association also conducts economic analyses on the impact of legislation and regulations on member products, and monitors and reports on key industry market indicators. All programs comply with NEMA statistical confidentiality policies. For more information, please see Business & Economy.
