About Solar Electric Fences

When the traditional wire fence no longer deters animals, a solar-powered fence may be the answer. These fences require no AC outlet and, though the sun powers them, they still provide enough electric shock to deter animals as large as deer. The electric shock should only be high enough to frighten an animal and should never be used to harm.
  1. Features

    • Solar electric fences may be the perfect solution when a traditional AC outlet isn't available. Powered by the sun, these fences are made with a charger that may be purchased either online or at a specialty hardware store. In addition, chargers come in a variety strengths to meet your specific lawn and garden needs. At night, solar charges use stored energy to make sure your garden is protected.

    Benefits

    • Many homeowners have found that a traditional wire fence doesn't keep out larger, stronger animals. These pesky critters still find ways to enter forbidden areas. In addition, they often destroy the wire fences. A solar powered fence, though, is a larger deterrent and not as easily destroyed. Many manufacturers offer several different charges. For smaller animals, a lighter charge is all that's needed, but for larger animals such as deer, a more expensive model may be necessary.

    Supplies Needed

    • Many people choose to build their own solar electric fence after purchasing a solar electric fence charger. To make your own fence, make sure you have the following items: a charger unit, shovel, posts, wire or mesh, ground rods and wire, insulators, electric fence tester and tensioners.

    Building the Fence

    • When you build your fence, please refer to a more technical manual as well. The following is simply a basic outline. First, build your fence just as you would a traditional fence. Never use barbed wire, as it could entangle small animals and harm or kill them. Make sure you attach the wire or mesh with insulators and tensioners.
Next, on a sturdy surface, attach the solar electric charger in direct sunlight, and make sure it's facing south. After making a ground bed near your charger, dig a shallow trench and attach the required number of ground rods for your charger. Attach the negative lead to the grounding rods and the positive lead to the fence.
Finally, charge your battery for at least one day before energizing the fence.

    Maintenance

    • Now that you've built your fence and energized the fence, make sure that you regularly check the voltage level of the fence. If the charger is left in storage for more than a few days, make sure to leave the charger in direct sunlight for at least three days before connecting it to the fence.
