Kamran Kazem • Regarding Mr. Bomboir's comment, I would say it's more important to make sure that the UPS Output is rated to power a low power factor load. If it is, then if the UPS input is power factor corrected, that would work, but you may be in for a bad surprise if the UPS cannot handle the low power factor load. Moreover, the original question was about handling harmonics. I would say it depends on the nature and level of the harmonics. It's more likely that a simple passive LC filter would do the job. The subject of Harmonics and power factor, while having some relationship, in general are two different issues and need to be handled that way. There is a big difference between having to handle low frequency harmonics, more strongly related to power factor, like 2X to 10X versus high frequency harmonics in the 10X and up. It also depends on the purpose. If it is to meet a power factor input spec versus an EMI spec versus some other reason for reducing harmonics.

Dean Sheridan • @Kamran: I cant disagree with much other than your dealing with the unusual and 5% of concerns. My TPS solution impacts 95%. Therefore it is more practical and value orientated. At the point where there are remote issues, expertise like yours is beneficial. I don't know who doesn't check power factors when installing 350,000.00 pieces of equipment anyway. Do you?

Kamran Kazem • Dean, I'm not sure what a "TPS solution" is and whether the 95% means that your solution eliminates harmonics up to 95% or that it solves 95% of UPS problems. What I can say is that this forum is not a UPS only forum and that if you care to look at the original question in this thread, it was not specific to UPS and even if it was, I never heard anything in this thread about $350K pieces of equipment versus a $100 UPS or power supply. The question was not about UPS until you made it so and that's fine, but there are other all-UPS forums. This one is for Power Supplies, Engineering Consultants, Professoinals. So let's keep it that way, professional I mean. You need not take pot shots at me by stating that I'm addressing the "unusual and 5% of concerns". It seems that your point in getting involved in this forum is to promote your UPS products from a marketing standpoint and not really to help people with primarily technical concerns, especially if they are of a general nature, as is Raymond's at the top of this page. I'm not only a Senior Power Electronics designer, but I'm a business owner as well. Kamran Kazem • I don't think that there is a one-size-fits-all answer here. Let's use some common-sense. If we're talking low to medium power, perhaps a passive filter would be fine and is cost-effective. If very high power in the 10's of KW, either a passive or an active filter may make sense. It depends on details, like the nature of the harmonics, the load, the AC voltage, and other factors. It's very easy to keep saying in post after post that "APF would be the right solution". Without details of the problem, I can't understand how you can make that statement Amrit, no matter what the circumstances. Mohammed Qumbar • I am attending to agree with Kazem, it depends on capacity and and more accurate parameters, especially with passive filtering, which is definitely error and try process.

The fact that UPS can eliminate such harmonics, no one can ignores that, however, as mentioned, it is subject to be learned carefully with UPS, and would not be cost effective.

the harmonics has direct relation to Power Factor, and almost no UPS can deal with PF lower than 0.5, or let's say it can fully de-rate the UPS, apart of this fact, the harmonics are reflected to be as crest factor load onto UPS, which is subject to fully de-rate it as well.

Mohmd Firzabdi • Firstly, we have to doing some analysis on the harmonics, which order are they, magnitude, what is the real origin and how could control preventing, is that a steady state or temporary transient fluctuating magnitude, what is the behaviour, and how much important or sensitive are other equipment around local and also main transformer.
Thus as a harmonic problem is a very wide qualitive multiple parameters involved, we need a clear description of situation, and reaching is the main and first step.

Rouzbeh Haddadi • It can't be any right solution, before measuring PF. a power analyzer can show most of important harmonics, and THD . but generally PFC(active/passive) devices can solve the problem.
