Woman On Canoe Killed After Lightning Strike Saturday, July 30, 2011 A woman Missouri is dead after a lightning strike on the Gasconade River. The Highway Patrol says it happened in Pulaski County. Troopers say the woman was in a canoe with two men, all of them injured by lightning. She died at the scene, and the men are listed as stable in a nearby hospital. Other sources tell KTTS News that the woman is from Fair Grove and 20 years old. Posted: Monday, August 1, 2011 4:08 pm | Steve Puckett stevep@buffaloreflex.com | 0 comments The Fair Grove community is rallying around the family and friends of one of its own following the death of Lindsay Smith, 20, who is a 2009 graduate of Fair Grove High School. According to Pulaski County coroner Mikel Hartness, at approximately 2 p.m. Saturday, July 30, on the Gasconade River about a half mile downstream from Gasconade Hills Resort, Smith was one of three canoeists to suffer an indirect lightning strike. Hartness could not comment on the condition of the other two people, whose names have not been released as of press time, but confirmed that at 3:30 p.m. Saturday he pronounced Smith dead at the scene due to cardiac arythmia. She was in that blast area, he said, explaining that Smith, although not directly hit by the lightning, was rendered unconscious at the moment of the strike. We have a counseling support system in place at Fair Grove, and we want to let people know that this is available even before school starts on Aug. 11, said Mike Bell, high school principal, who added that counseling is available to students and faculty members alike. Lindsays mother, Tracy, is the secretary in the main office of the high school. Bell said that Lindsay was an outgoing student with a great personality and was involved in many activities, including FFA and volleyball. He explained that district officials began notifying faculty members after learning of Lindsays death on July 30. Since that time, personnel from throughout the district have been providing the Smith family with meals and support. Bell said that he has met with members of the family and they are doing as well as can be expected. Tracy is a big part of our school, and we are here for her and for her family, he said. Matt Crutcher, Fair Grove FFA advisor, said he has known Lindsay since she was a little girl and that she had been an FFA member since the eighth grade. She was a real enthusiastic girl who was very committed to what she was doing, Crutcher said. She knew how to get the best from those around her. Lindsay was the Fair Grove FFA chapter president as a junior, and her senior year she was the local student advisor and area FFA secretary representing 24 schools. She competed on the livestock, dairy cattle and entomology teams at Fair Grove. Tonya Peck, Fair Grove High School volleyball coach, said Lindsay was a part of the Lady Eagles program ever since she was a freshman. After breaking her foot the summer before, Lindsay began playing varsity volleyball as a sophomore. She was the hardest worker Ive ever had, said Peck. She never even missed a day of practice after being injured. She was lifting weights and doing crunches on the sideline. Peck also recalled how Lindsay once wore cowboy boots with her dress as part of the homecoming court. She was Lindsay at all times, and people loved her for it, said Peck. Visitation will be Thursday evening at Greenlawn Funeral Home North Chapel in Springfield. The funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Fair Grove High School gymnasium. Michael, I was hiking earlier today at Humphrey's Peak in AZ and a lightning storm hit us. Myself and 2 other hikers were struck by lightning and knocked to the ground. We believe it was a branch off of a major strike or a minor strike, as none of us has serious burns. It felt like an unusually intense static shock on each of our heads that knocked us to the ground. I also later felt a static shock on my hand while running down the mountain, but it didn't knock me to the ground at all. I am wondering if I should seek medical attention. I feel mostly fine, but kind of out of it - although that might be due to fatigue and the fact that we hiked two hours from that point down a hail storm that we were completely unprepared though. I just worry about residual effects from the strike. Thank you for your help. Brad

BEIJING, July 25 (Xinhua) -- Two people found dead on a rain-soaked road in Beijing Sunday night are suspected to have been killed by lightning, as the heaviest rainstorm in 13 years pounded the city from Sunday through Monday morning and is expected to linger into Monday evening. The victims, a man and a woman, were found dead on a road outside a plant in Nancai Industrial Park in Shunyi District at 9 p.m. Sunday, said a spokesman with the district government on Monday. The northern district of Miyun recorded precipitation of 243 mm in 22 hours before 6 a.m. Monday, said Wei Jianmin, chief forecaster of the Beijing Observatory. He said the rain is important to replenish Beijing's primary water source of the Miyun Reservoir, which has received 17 million cubic meters of water during the rain so far. Although the rain had little effect on traffic Monday, it caused a disturbance in the city's busy air traffic. According to Beijing Capital International Airport's website, 329 flights were canceled due to the rainstorm. Meanwhile, traffic on a rail link between Beijing and Chengde City in neighboring Hebei Province was suspended after several sections of the track were submerged in rainwater Sunday night. Workers are still rushing to clear the railway. The city mobilized Sunday evening to take precautions against rainstorm-triggered disasters. More than 6,000 residents living in the hilly regions of Miyun and Pinggu districts in Beijing's outskirts were evacuated to safe grounds Sunday evening before floods inundated more than 10 villages and triggered four landslides there. The China National Meteorological Center on Monday morning continued a rainstorm alert, forecasting rains to hit Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, and Liaoning and Hebei provinces in the north, as well as eastern Shandong and Jiangsu provinces in the next 24 hours. A sudden rainstorm in Xingshan County, central Hubei Province, on Sunday night injured nine people and caused a blackout and disrupted traffic. The rainstorm only lasted 12 minutes but damaged 649 houses as well as roads, bridges and power facilitie

PUBLISHED: JULY 26, 2011 1:30 AM EST UPDATED: JULY 26, 2011 6:45 AM EST Swift storm strikes Erie region BY TIM HAHN, Erie Times-News tim.hahn@timesnews.com Share Email Print Font Size ADVERTISEMENT A brief but powerful storm that gave the Erie region a needed dose of rain Monday also spawned funnel clouds and sent one man to the hospital after he was struck by lightning. The storm hit the city shortly after 11 a.m. and featured several lightning strikes, at least three water spouts and a possible tornado that numerous people spotted in western Millcreek Township. Some witnesses said it touched down briefly, but Erie County Emergency Management officials had no official reports of tornado-related damage. Rainfall from the storm also flooded some local roads temporarily, including portions of West 11th Street in the city. John Nekoloff, captain of the Edward John fishing vessel, said his boat was out on Lake Erie when a little weather cell that appeared on his radar to the west of his location quickly grew to a "big, stinking supercell" that cranked the winds to 40 knots and cut his visibility to zero. "It was pretty bad," he said. "We popped our anchor winch, so in the midst of all that weather we had to deal with pulling up our 60-pound anchor without a winch." Numerous lightning strikes hit Erie as the storm descended on the city at about 11:30 a.m. One strike reportedly hit a man in the 800 block of Delaware Avenue. The man, whose name was not released, was inside a vehicle when EmergyCare paramedics arrived at the neighborhood. He was taken to the hospital for treatment, an EmergyCare supervisor said. The supervisor did not comment on the man's condition. But a neighbor, Jack Chilcott, said the man was sitting up and taking oxygen while being taken away in an ambulance. He had no other information on what happened, but said there were numerous lightning strikes to the north of the neighborhood when the incident happened. "It's just a weird thing," Chilcott said. "We need the rain, but we don't need anyone to get hurt over it." Erica Wright and Garrett Brotherson, both 18, said they were out on Baer Beach in Millcreek Township with other neighbors when they spotted three water spouts on Lake Erie at about 11:30 a.m. One of the water spouts headed south toward shore, hit the beach and then went up a cliff, Brotherson said. Erie International Airport staff watched two water spouts coming in off Lake Erie at about 11:30 a.m. "They looked like funnel clouds but weren't really well defined," said Ian Bogle, chief of airport police. "They were sort of hovering along the lake shore and seemed to dissipate as they hit the shoreline near Peninsula Drive." A US Airways 11:33 a.m. flight to Philadelphia was just departing as the storm hit, and turned around and came back to the terminal, Bogle said. Millcreek Township employees watched through a north-facing window as the reported funnel cloud moved across the shoreline from west to east. The township building at 3608 W. 26th St. had no damage. "It went down and up and dissipated quickly," said Bob Mitchell, director of the Millcreek Bureau of Fire Protection. Two township police detectives also spotted the funnel cloud as they were at West 26th Street and Peninsula Drive. They said it did not appear to touch the ground, Millcreek police Capt. Randy Faipler said. The National Weather Service issued a tornado warning at 11:50 a.m. for Erie County, until 12:30 p.m., but canceled it at 12:15 p.m. Staff writers Kevin Flowers, Valerie Myers and Lisa Thompson contributed to this report. Lightning hits crowd at El Paso raceway Comments 4 July 24, 2011 8:02 PM MARIA ST.LOUIS-SANCHEZ The Gazette A lightning strike from out of nowhere hit an east El Paso County motocross raceway Sunday afternoon, knocking people down and sending one woman to the hospital, the raceway owner said. There was a bright light and it was very loud, said Byron Wolf, owner of the Aztec Family Raceway on Highway 94 near Ellicott. Five people got flattened. The lighting struck about 3 p.m. during the last race of the day when about 200 people were watching or participating in the race. Wolf said medical personnel already at the track immediately helped the victims. Four were able to walk away and the fifth, a woman who didnt seem to be seriously injured, was taken to the hospital, Wolf said. Wolf said he saw the large storm to the south of raceway, but it seemed to be headed in another direction. Then, before there was any wind or a drop of rain, the lightning hit. After the strike all of the racers were called in, he said, and the raceway was then pounded by a powerful storm making its way through the county. The National Weather Service issued a flash flood warning from 4-7 p.m. Sunday. Read more: http://www.gazette.com/articles/lightning-121982-raceway-strike.html#ixzz1TAZcVjOo

I must have known something. She said one of the phrases I kept repeating was, 'I took quite a shock. I took quite a shock.' " Lightning can carry 100 million volts of electricity and can be quite deadly. Adkins' kids were nearby. "I was concerned because my kids were in there with me," he said. "I let my son go because he thinks it's neat to go under the house." Adkins' wife took him to the hospital for a CAT scan and some other tests, which all turned out fine. On the following Monday, he was still unsure. "I didn't really know what was going on until I got on Facebook and saw all the prayer requests from my family because of the lightning. Raynham woman makes inspiring recovery after being struck by lightning Gets married in rehab facility two weeks after incident Zoom Photos Purchase this photo Wicked Local photo by Ashley McCabe Kimberly Bridgwood, who was struck by lightning in July, shows a picture she made for her sister who passed away recently. « » By Rebecca Hyman Wicked Local Raynham Posted Nov 29, 2011 @ 05:02 PM Last update Nov 29, 2011 @ 06:30 PM Raynham Kimberly Bridgwood was looking out her sliding glass doors at the tranquil pond in her backyard on a wet and windy summer morning thinking about her bridesmaids dresses. It had been thundering and lightning for hours, but she didnt mind. Shed been hoping for rain. It had been a brutally hot, dry July and the tomatoes, potatoes, cucumbers and radishes in her garden were thirsty. She never imagined the storm that had finally soaked the ground would change her life forever. The next thing she knew, she was thrown back several feet onto the floor. She felt as though her legs, back and head were on fire. Kimberly Bridgwood, a 38 year-old mother of three, was struck by lightning in her own home on July 23 two weeks before her wedding day. But thats not the end of her story. It was just the beginning of a four-month journey in which she relearned to walk and talk, read and write, a journey on which everything was new to her, from the seasons first snowfall to faces shed known for a lifetime that had been erased from her memory. But instead of recoiling in fear or hopelessness, she has inspired those around her with her determination, positive attitude and remarkable recovery, her husband Jimmy said. The two were married at Radius HealthCare Center in Plymouth on Aug. 7, the exact date they had set before she was injured. A radiant bride in her white lace dress, Kim wasnt allowed to wear fancy shoes, so she decorated her sneakers with pretty little bows. Her father walked her down the aisle, in this case literally, as she rested her weight on him, unable to walk on her own yet. There wasnt a dry eye in the place, Jimmys mother Madeline of Pine Hill Estates in Raynham said. Jimmy and Kims vows were tested before they ever took them. Jimmy said he never, ever thought about canceling the wedding because of Kims injury. The only thing that crossed his mind was to wait until she was well enough to enjoy it. But when she heard that, she thought he was having second thoughts. She told him it was okay and not to worry about her. He knew in that instant it didnt matter if she were well enough to walk down the aisle on her own. What mattered is they be together & for better or worse, in sickness and in health. Our love is so strong. I get better for you, she said. She felt she had something to live for, he said. The lightning that injured Kim, who was living on Carver Road in Plymouth at the time, didnt hit her directly. It was a proximity strike. The firefighters found a singed area in the grass about 75 feet from the house. Thats probably where the fateful bolt hit but theres no way to be sure, Jimmy said. Wherever it struck, it traveled across the ground until it found Kim. She had no entrance or exit wounds, nor any external burns. Jimmy said he was told that meant the lightings current was less than 100,000 amps. Just before the strike, she had been alone in the basement apartment they shared standing barefoot on a throw rug on a concrete floor reinforced with steel bars, a highly conductive material that must have carried the current, Jimmy said. Now she recoils if she sees someone walking around barefoot. Shes convinced rubber-soled shoes might have protected her. Jimmy was upstairs and heard her screaming. When he found her, she was in excruciating pain. After a few minutes, the initial agony was replaced with paralysis. She couldnt feel or move her legs and her speech was impaired. She was transported to Jordan Hospital in Plymouth, where the neurologist said she had suffered a minor trauma, would recover quickly and could go home in the morning, Jimmy said. The diagnosis would have been a relief but it didnt make sense, Jimmy said. Kim couldnt even sign her name. Even more alarming, she didnt know what it meant to sign her name, Jimmy said. As it turned out the doctor was very wrong, Jimmy said. She was eventually diagnosed with transcortical motor aphasia. Her brain injury has affected her memory, speech and cognitive functioning, she said. When Jimmy watched a recent interview with Arizona Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, who has touched the nation with her heroic struggle to battle back from a gunshot wound to the head, it was like seeing Kims twin, Jimmy said. He recognized the halting speech as well as the indomitable spirit. Kim was sent home from Radius after just a couple of weeks and immediately began to regress, Jimmy said. He knew she needed more intensive rehab but had trouble convincing the insurance company. He was denied again and again but refused to give up. Jimmy has been relentless in getting care for Kim, said Stephen Fraga, a Raynham neighbor and close family friend. They all shudder to think what would have happened to Kim if shed had no one to advocate for her. Jimmy is convinced shed be confined to a wheel chair and unable to communicate effectively. Instead, he eventually succeeded in getting her approved for a stay at Neuro-Rehabilitation Center in Middleboro, which unlike Radius, specializes in brain injuries, and she progressed in leaps and bounds, Jimmy said. While at Neuro, as serious as her own condition was, she took the time to help others, visiting with the patients who seemed most isolated, the ones who were unable to move at all or communicate. The staff began to call her Florence Nightingale and marveled at her extraordinary recovery. When Kim was discharged on Nov. 16, she could once again walk on her own, though still with a noticeable wobble, and speak clearly, though she still omits words the way a young child might, as when she said with a disarming smile, I one smart cookie. Jimmy doesnt know how much more progress Kim will make. He was told to expect very little. But instead, hes open to whatever comes their way. Jimmy said Kim is how he imagines she must have been as a child. But at the same time, she has an old souls wisdom and maturity and is an exceptional judge of character, Fraga said. I think shes going to have a richer life, said Fraga, a retired high school English teacher. She may have forgotten facts and words, but she hasnt forgotten what really matters. Her spiritual, intuitive side is not only unscathed. It seems to have been unleashed, Fraga said. She refuses to call Madeline her mother-in-law. No law, just mom, Kim said. When she heard about the Christmas tradition of exchanging gifts, she asked Why would someone give me present? Its Jesus birthday, not mine. Jimmy and Kim had been planning to write their own vows but when she heard the traditional vows, as if for the first time, to love, honor and cherish, she asked, How you improve on that? How many supposedly normal people can say that? Fraga asked. When Kimberly Bridgwood was 14 years old, she was in a devastating motorcycle accident and was paralyzed from the waist down for two years, Jimmy said. But when she was recently told about the motorcycle accident, which shed forgotten, instead of asking Why do these things keep happening to me? she saw it as a sign of hope. She said, If I can overcome that, I can overcome this. Shes never given up. Shes a miracle, Jimmy said. Copyright 2011 Raynham Call. The girl's mother said the sun was shining when her daughter was struck by a bolt from the blue. It was apparently from a storm several miles away. Bolts from the blue are extremely rare, so we asked Chief Meteorologist Chester Lampkin to shine some light on this weather phenomenon. "Lightning on a clear and sunny day is a real and very dangerous phenomenon. These errant strikes of lightning, sometimes called "bolts from the blue" are in fact associated with thunderstorms. It's just you can't see the storm," Lampkin said. "Occasionally lightning strikes emerge from the back side of a thunderstorm cloud, travel a relatively long distance before angling downward to the ground. From the view point of a person near the strike, it would seem the lightning came out of blue skies. In reality, the storm where this deadly bolt comes from may be up to 25 miles away. That's what makes bolts from the blue so dangerous." The National Weather Service recommends waiting at least 30 minutes after the final appearance of lightning before resuming outdoor activity. If someone hears thunder, they should head inside. The 30 minute rule can keep families safe while enjoying the great outdoor activities Mid-Missouri offers. Weather Call also offers a mobile lightning option which gives the user a heads up when lightning enters and exits the area. As always, you can find weather information on KRCG or our website for the latest conditions. 11-Year-Old Girl Struck By Lightning July 27, 2011 9:13 PM Share this 4Share No comments The 11-year-old girl had just gotten out of her familys pool when she was struck by lightning. (Credit: KDKA) Filed Under Local, News, Syndicated Local Related Tags Dr. Thomas Pirosko, Jon Greiner, Lightning, Washington County, Washington Hospital WASHINGTON, Pa. (KDKA) The sky was clear, but an 11-year-old girl was struck by lightning. This happened last Friday in Washington County. The girl had just gotten out of her familys swimming pool and was walking in her backyard. The lightning went in her shoulder and out through her arm which is now broken. More often than not its serious injury such as sudden death or cardiac arrest, Dr. Thomas Pirosko, an emergency room physician at Washington Hospital, said. So, if anyone is struck by lightning, you should obviously call 911 as soon as possible and get to your nearest emergency room. The girls father says they feel very fortunate that she is alive. If you hear thunder, lightning is very likely close by, so seek shelter. Remember, it can hit you coming or going. And if you do hear that lightning, thunder and youre doing activities outside, you need to wait at least a half an hour to resume your activities outside, Dr. Pirosko said. Britney Wehrle was walking with a friend on a sunny, warm day when she was suddenly struck by lightning, even though the sky above her was clear and blue. And while that may sound like a rare or even freakish event, it's not that uncommon for lightning to travel far from its originating cloud, experts say. In some cases, bolts have struck as much as 25 miles from where they originated. Scientists refer to these wayward streaks of electricity as "bolts from the blue," since it often seems as though the lightning comes out of a clear blue sky. HSW: How Lightning Works As 11-year-old Wehrle recovers from a broken arm and a burn mark on her shoulder, it may be a good time to refresh your memory about how to protect yourself from lightning. At the top of the list: Avoid exposing yourself to it. "When thunder roars, go indoors, and stay in there for 30 minutes after you hear the last thunder clap," said Susan Buchanan, spokeswoman for the National Weather Service in Silver Spring, Md., and a member of the agency's lightning safety team. "Lightning is unpredictable," she added. "There's no safe place outdoors in a thunderstorm. If you remain outdoors during a thunderstorm, you are taking a gamble that you won't become one of the statistics." And those statistics are staggering. Every year, according to the National Weather Service, the Earth experiences 16 million thunderstorms. That amounts to an average of 1,800 storms happening at any given moment. Over the course of a year, 25 million bolts strike the ground, usually during thunderstorms but also during intense forest fires, heavy snowstorms, volcanic eruptions, nuclear detonations and large hurricanes. NEWS: Thunder Could Help Track Lightning on Titan Lightning kills an average of 55 people every year, Buchanan said, but it hits and severely injures hundreds more. According to calculations on NOAA's National Severe Storms Laboratory website, there is a one in 3,000 chance of getting killed or injured by lightning in your lifetime, assuming an average life span of 80 years. The chances of lightning hurting someone close to you is one in 300. To form, lightning requires a specific combination of circumstances, said Vladimir Rakov, an electrical engineer and lightning expert at the University of Florida, Gainesville. The recipe includes hot temperatures on the ground and moist conditions, as well as strong updrafts that propel wet air into the cooler atmosphere, where it condenses and form clouds. With its warmth, humidity and sea breezes that blow off two coasts, Florida experiences more lightning than any other state. But even there, clouds have to get high enough for ice to form, because electrification only happens within clouds that contain water in both its solid and liquid states. As electric charges accumulate inside cloud, sparks start to fly, much like the sparks you sometimes see as you reach for a doorknob after shuffling your feet on a carpet. Some bolts travel within clouds. Others hit the ground. But exactly where a lightning bolt will end up is anyones guess. And often, it ends up in more than one place. PHOTOS: Lightning's Incredible Power A flash of lightning can last for up to a second, Rakov explained, and each flash is usually made up of many strokes. Sometimes, those strokes all follow the same path. But studies show that between one-third and one half of flashes end up sending bolts to multiple end-points. Why that happens isn't completely clear. One theory is that the first few strokes create a charge that repels subsequent strokes, diverting them elsewhere. Scientists also know that bolts can emerge from the side of a cloud and they may then travel for miles through long horizontal channels before eventually striking ground. Whatever the cause, bolts from the blue can, on rare occasions, be deadly. The best thing people can do to avoid getting hit is to be vigilant of weather forecasts. If the radar shows storms approaching, Buchanan said, postpone outdoor activities. If you're outside and you hear thunder, go inside right away. And a pavilion doesn't count. Lightning can come in through the sides or travel through the ground. WATCH VIDEO: Do you have a calling as an Extreme Storm Surveyor? There are only two absolutely safe places to be during a thunderstorm. One is in a metal car. The other is in a house with a roof, four walls, and plumbing and electric systems that can absorb the electricity of a lightning strike. Once youre inside, don't touch anything that's plugged into the wall. And stay away from sinks, bathtubs, showers, even toilets. Electricity travels efficiently through water and metal. In a car, dont fiddle with the radio. Buchanan couldn't emphasize enough her urgent advice to get inside as soon as you hear thunder. The majority of people who get struck, she said, had just waited too long before heading toward safety. If you're camping in the wilderness and inside is not an option, stay away from tall isolated trees. Get off of hills and ridgelines in favor of low-lying areas -- though you should also watch out for flash flooding. Unfortunately, tents offer no protection from lightning. "A lot of times people who are outside run for trees because they are more concerned about getting wet," Buchanan said. "But that makes them more vulnerable."

Lightning strike leaves father and son recovering Posted: Jul 18, 2011 6:12 PM Updated: Jul 18, 2011 6:45 PM By Maira Ansari - bio | email Shad Hinkley and Braedin Hinkley (Source; Hinkley family) Gene Wilder SHELBY COUNTY, KY (WAVE) - A fishing trip takes a terrifying turn and a father and son are recovering. A lightning strike sent them to the hospital. The youngest victim's grandmother told us 10-year-old Braedin Hinkley is expected to be okay. He was released from the hospital Monday. It was his father, Shad Hinkley, who was hit by the lightning strike in Shelby County. Shad is still in the hospital in Frankfort. Both father and son tried to go fishing with Gene Wilder on Wilder's property off of Bagdad Road on Sunday. 'They went out made a couple casts and it started lightning real bad and came back to the truck," said Wilder. "He was just walking along and carrying his pole. BANG! That lightning, it was like a bomb went off." Wilder says a lightning strike hit Shad and knocked him to the ground, his son Braedin was right next to him. Wilder knew Shad was hit bad. "He went down and I jumped out of the truck and of course he was out for probably out for 3 to 5 minutes," said Wilder. "He come to and looked around and said what happened? Where am I at? What's going on? And said man, I can't feel my legs and I can't walk. I said everything will be okay." Wilder called 911 and got Shad and his son in his car. Family members told WAVE 3 that Braedin only had a headache and was released from the Kosair Children's Hospital after careful observation. His father is still recovering. Shad's ear drum was ruptured, his fingers were burnt, and is in quite a bit of pain. Wilder says it could have been a lot worse. "It's a miracle from God that he is alive," said Wilder. "You are right, miracle from God." Family members tell WAVE 3 they hope Shad will be released from the hospital Tuesday. According to the National Weather Service, 1 in 700,000 people are struck by lightning and only 10 percent of people die. Copyright 2011 WAVE News. All rights reserve SHELBYVILLE, Ky. A man and his son have survived being struck by lightning while fishing. Shad Hinkley's fishing pole was reduced to strands of fiberglass by the strike Sunday as Hinkley and his 10-year-old son Braedin fished at a friend's farm pond in Shelby County, east of Louisville. Shad Hinkley's friend Gene Wilder told WAVE-TV Hinkley and his son were walking to a truck after a storm approached when the strike occurred. Wilder said Shad Hinkley was unconscious for a few minutes and then was disoriented. The boy was released from Kosair Children's Hospital after observation. The father has now been released from a hospital and is recovering from burns on his hand and a ruptured ear drum.

Hi, my name is Ian Hett and I was struck by lightning yesterday in new Mexico. My family was stopping at the royal gorge bridge when it started to sprinkle, so, stupidly, we thought we had better hurry to get some good pictures. We started walking out on the bridge. I was about 20-30 yards in front of everyone else when bam, I lost consciousness for a second and came to falling to the ground. I heard what sounded like the second half of the thunder but had no idea what happened, my family saw me and quickly asked if I was okay. They got hit very little, I think it jumped from the railing on the side of the bridge, and must have hit a lot closer to me. I'm glad to still be here today! Ian Hett
