"My arm went all pins and needles, my face went kind of funny and it went down the right side of me. I never experienced anything like it in my life. The hair stood up on my head," Bob said. Bob, a tree-trimmer for over 40 years, was holding on to the metal gearshift of his 1986 Blazer when the lightning hit. He thinks the electric charge traveled through that gearshift. Stunned, a little woozy and with his right side feeling like it was on fire, he headed to Hunterdon Medical Center nearby, where he was given a battery of tests including a CT scan. "They saw something that maybe could have caused a partial stroke-type thing, which may be what's wrong with my eye," Bob said. The vision in his right eye is fuzzy and his right side is still numb. Today, Bob is spending his day with doctors. He's got to go to the neurologist, the ophthalmologist and his own personal physician. But, he's not complaining one bit! "In my years of doing tree work, seeing all the damage from lightning and then having this happen to me&I just thank God I'm here. Very scary. I'm going to play the lottery," Bob said. Drift is still wearing his medal of the Blessed Mother. He's cleaned it up some, but the edges are still blackened from when the lightning bolt hit. Bob Drift is counting his blessings and remembering the words of his emergency room doctor after his close encounter with lightning. "He said, 'you're lucky.' He said, 'you're my favorite patient today, you made it.'" Bob said. (Copyright ©2011 WPVI-TV/DT. All Rights Reserved.)

WEST HAVEN -- Lightning struck and injured a construction worker in West Haven Friday morning. Weber County authorities say it happened on Granite Construction property near 1500 South and 1900 West at about 9:00 a.m. Weber County Fire Captain Casey Naef said that the strike was indirect, hitting a truck next to the man and throwing him away from the vehicle. Authorities say he was with a crew from Granite construction. He was taken to the hospital with serious injuries to the hands and face, though Naef said his condition improved on the way to the hospital and he was able to speak with medical workers.

Two Broward Workers Survive Lightning Strikes August 15, 2011 8:54 PM Share this 1Share 1 comment (Source: AP) Reporting Kelly Sedano Filed Under Local, News Related Tags Bob Taylor, Chad Brocato, Davie, Deerfield Beach, Florida, Lightning, Lightning Bolt, Lightning Strike, National Weather Service, Robert Molleda, Storm FT. LAUDERDALE (CBS4) Mondays storms proved to be dangerous as two Broward workers were struck by lightning in separate incidents. According to the South Florida Sun-Sentinel, the first strike was at 2 p.m., injuring an unidentified 38 year old man who was doing lawn maintenance at Indian Ridge Middle School on the 1300 block of Nob Hill Road in Davie. Officials believe the worker was weeding near a chain link fence. They believe the fence was struck by lightning and the current traveled to the man, who may have been leaning against it. Hes dazed and confused, and a little shook up, but in good condition, said Davie Fire Rescue Assistant Fire Marshal Bob Taylor. He was taken to the hospital. The second strike was to a crane operator at a highway construction site in Deerfield Beach. The crane operator was working a remote-control device that was attached to the crane, said Deerfield Beach Fire-Rescue Chief Chad Brocato. The crane was struck by lightning and current traveled down it and struck the operator. The construction worker reportedly suffered burns to his right abdomen and arm and was taken to North Broward Medical Center for treatment. National Weather Service Meteorologist Robert Molleda says although Florida gets more lightning strikes than any other state in the country, it is highly unusual for two people to be injured by lightning strikes in the same county, on the same day. Usually with multiple injuries or people being hit, its from the same bolt, Molleda said. Molleda says Mondays injuries could have been prevented by looking into the sky and stay alert. Dont wait for the raindrops, Molleda said. Let the thunder be your cue that you are within the range of where lightning can strike and that you need to head indoors.

Only on WINK: Father saves son after lightning Story Created: Aug 15, 2011 at 10:52 PM America/New_York | More FORT MYERS, Fla. -- A Lee County father saves the life of his son after he's struck by lightning while doing roofing work. It all happened in Charlotte County just before 10 a.m. Monday morning. The father and son are speaking out exclusively to WINK News about the frightening experience that changed their life forever. "It seems unreal. Being dead for a few minutes is crazy and waking up," said Jesse Maxwell, who was struck by lightning. Jesse and his father Dan hope they saying is true that lightning doesn't strike in the same place twice. "It was frightening, eerie, it all happened so quick. I ran up and four guys got up and my son Jesse did not," said Dan Maxwell, Jesse's father. On Monday morning, the father son duo were working on a roof in Port Charlotte doing tests when all of a sudden, out of the partly cloudy sky, a bolt of lightning hit Jesse. Dan jumped into action, using the training he had learning decades ago, starting CPR on his son, while others called 911. "I wasn't giving up hope but it was extremely frightening to me because I thought I lost my son. I had to just keep going with it. He responded after about three minutes or so the worst day of my life turned into the best," said Dan. "When the EMS guy told me I got struck by lightning, I was like what?! I couldn't believe it," said Jeese. "The training I received years and years ago from the Red Cross that I never, ever dreamt that I'd have to use and I'm thankful to see my son," said Dan. "If he didn't know CPR, I don't think I'd be here. I really don't. I owe my life to him again," said Jesse. The Maxwell family is counting their blessings. As for Jesse, he's planning to rest up and take it easy for a few days. "My dad says I get the day off tomorrow," said Jesse. Jesse will stay at Lee Memorial overnight and doctors will check him out Tuesday. If everything is in the clear, he'll be released to continue his recovery at home. Hello, My name is Jesse Maxwell. I was struck by lightning on 8/15/11. I caught the last 10 minutes of the special on Nat Geo "I Was Struck By Lightning" and saw your story. It was quite amazing and wished I could have seen all of the show. I see that my incident has been logged in the strike database. I live in Cape Coral, Fl and the incident occurred on the roof of a condo building in Port Charlotte, Fl. I feel very fortunate to be alive and doing surprisingly better than one would expect. I keep wondering how it's possible I'm not in worse shape. I give credit to my father Dan Maxwell and the other gentlemen Anthony Thomassi* for jumping right into action with CPR. I would not be here if not for them. Contrary to the first news report, I was not standing in water and from what we conclude I was hit directly. There was no storm over head, My brother told me the lightning bolt that hit me would be called a positive flash coming from the top of the storm. We spray Poly-Urethane foam and of the 5 guys on the roof, I was the only one holding our insulated spray hose (it has copper ran through it for hose heaters). I can't help but wonder if that played a factor in it. The lightning made contact on my right shoulder/neck and went down and across my chest and apparently exited by my left rib cage resulting in Cardiac Arrest. The burn it left looked more like someone ran a whip across me. I was also sweaty from work maybe making more of the bolts energy stay on the outside of my body. I was also left with a perforated ear drum in my right ear. I am recovering at home with joint and muscle pain in my upper body. I guess I wanted to share my story with you and see if with your wealth of knowledge I could get any insight on my incident. Also with the follow up visits to the doctors, if there is anything else they should be looking for. If you want to contact me, please feel free to email any time or my number is. I appreciate your time and thank you for any input you might have. Sincerely, Jesse Maxwell

Three hospitalized after lightning strike on Tammany four-wheelers group Published: Sunday, August 14, 2011, 4:53 PM Updated: Sunday, August 14, 2011, 4:59 PM By Katie Urbaszewski, The Times-Picayune Follow 1 Share Email Print Three people were taken to a hospital after a large party was struck by lightning while riding four-wheelers in Covington on Saturday evening, fire officials said. The St. Tammany Fire District 6 received a call that lightning had touched down near a party of 40 people at Section and Robert roads, said Fire Chief Harold Dutsch. People in the crowd said some had been knocked unconscious, but everyone was conscious by the time firefighters arrived, he said. The three who were hospitalized, two adult men and an adult woman, had already left for the hospital when firefighters arrived, Dutsch said. He said firefighters evaluated "at least a dozen people that had some minor injuries," mainly burns. The fire department did not transport anyone to the hospital. Dutsch was unsure of the status of the hospitalized three, but said he was told they were kept overnight at the hospital. Dutsch said the group had been riding four-wheelers when the lightning struck.

No one was hit by the lightning but it came close and it shut down a football fundraiser behind Belen High School. Vendors packed up and headed out after a literally shocking day. Around 6 p.m. it was just windy, but about 3 p.m. a lighting bolt struck out of nowhere. Football player Zach Zirerau explained what he felt when the lightning bolt struck down. The lightning struck in a pavilion behind the school and vendors said they even felt it inside their food trucks. Some of the attendees said they hit the ground before they realized no one had been hit. "I was just like&.thank goodness pretty much, yeah," said football player William Krause. Some of the people there said it is not something they will soon forget. Others may take advantage of the experience. "We were thinking about buying lottery ticket because really what's the chance of that," Zirerau joked. The Fire Marshal ended up shutting down the football fundraiser about half an hour after the lightning struck. "It was worth not having the boys to be hurt or anybody be hurt so we all shut down," parent, Pink Meyer, said.

Woman killed in lightning strike led active lifestyle 2011-08-25 / Community By Anna Bitong annab@theacorn.com KIND SMILEJennifer King lived more in her 36 years than 10 people combined, said partner Christina Rivera. Jennifer King loved a new adventure. Why not? she would always ask. She had the perfect philosophy of life, said Christina Rivera, Kings partner. But that life was cut short when King, a 1992 graduate of Westlake High School, died Aug. 11 after she was struck by lightning while on vacation in Costa Rica. She was 36. She lived more in her 36 years than 10 people combined, said Rivera, who was with King when she died. King, Rivera and two friends arrived in the Central American country Aug. 4 and spent five days near Lake Arenal. We went zip-lining and truly participated in every activity possible, Rivera said. They traveled to the small beach town of Nosara to spend the second half of their 10-day vacation. On Aug. 11, the four women drove ATVs along the coast and watched beach turtles lay eggs. Jennifer and I were having the time of our lives, Rivera said. The sky turned gray as they rode back to their hotel that afternoon. We encountered a horrific rainstorm. It went from sunny to dark in minutes, Rivera said. (So) we pulled over to the side. The group sought shelter under a large tree but soon realized they were standing next to a bus stop with a metal roof. We knew we had to leave. We were sort of panicking and didnt know if we should get back on our quads, Rivera said. Jenny and I looked at each other. She told me she was scared. As Rivera jumped back on her ATV and turned the key, lightning struck. I was shocked. The pain went up my right leg and arm. She turned around and saw King on the ground. I attempted CPR on Jennifer for over an hour. . . . I was only saved by the fact that my feet were not on the ground, Rivera said. The two others in the group were hospitalized and survived. A life of service to others King and Rivera became acquaintances when they were students at UC Irvine, where King earned a bachelors degree in social ecology. Later King earned a masters degree in occupational therapy at USC. Rivera said she lost touch with King after college, but that they reconnected 13 years later during a chance encounter at a bar. We instantly remembered each other. We never left each others side after that, said Rivera, who grew up in Walnut, Calif. The two were together for six years and lived in Los Angeles. After finishing graduate school, King worked as an occupational therapist at the California Department of Mental Health. For 10 years, she helped mental health patients to enroll in schools and obtain jobs. The day before an Aug. 20 memorial for King was held in Westlake Village, the agencys board of directors issued a proclamation to honor the womans extraordinary work, Rivera said. The board said it was a rare (honor). Kings kindness extended to everyone around her, Rivera said. She had the most warm heart, most compassionate smile, most infectious spirit that made everyone feel like they were her best friend, she said. King was an aunt of two and an athlete who enjoyed fast-paced gliding down snowy hills and putting on grassy greens. She was an expert snowboarder, terrific golfer, the best aunt and truly the love of my life, Rivera said. I really hope that we will continue to honor her by living life to the fullest. Kings parents, Bob and Diane, still live in Westlake Village

Villagers accept mishap as God's will Posted on 8 August 2011 - 08:29pm Charles Ramendran CAMERON HIGHLANDS (Aug 8, 2011): Evacuees at the landslide relief centre, when approached by theSun spoke on the tragedy which they said would remain etched in their minds for a long time. "The weather has been dry for the past four months. We had no heavy rainfall until Wednesday. At 3pm it started and it rained heavily for more than an hour. "At 5.30pm, when I was with my family at home, there was a loud explosion and there it was, tonnes of soil crashing down the hill. We shouted for help to warn our neighbours but it was all over in a minute. "The houses were buried and our neighbours buried. We have never seen something like this before but maybe its God's will," said Ballas Bapin, a 73-year-old Semai and former Cameron Highlands Municipal Council worker. Ballas who has lived in the village since he was a young boy said among those killed in the tragedy were his relatives. "We hope the authorities will provide us with new housing, we hope so but if they do not give it to us, what can we do but continue living in danger," he said. Another villager, 41-year-old Harun Bahsoon said just before the hillslope collapsed, he saw a bolt of lightning hitting the hill. "It was a creepy kind of an explosion when the soil came down. I rushed out of my house with my wife and four children to help save those buried. Other villagers joined in. It was raining heavily and we ourselves were standing in waist deep mud and soil while trying to pull the victims out. "We managed to pull three people out. Two of them survived but the third person, a man in his 80's, was gasping to breathe. He died within minutes after the medical team arrived at the scene," said Harun who suffered a swollen leg after he slipped and fell while helping save those who were trapped. He said the dead man was not from the village but had arrived from another town. He had been staying with his son and family as he was receiving medical treatment at the Tanah Rata Hospital. "We are so afraid to return home now after this tragedy. We hope the government will provide us with a house on flat land and not next to hillslopes," said Harun who works for the Health Ministry. It was heartwarming to learn that Harun, Ballas and all other evacuees who spoke appeared calm and accepted their ill-fate as God's will.

Boater hospitalized after lightning strike in Indian River Lagoon By Elliott Jones Posted August 8, 2011 at 8:09 p.m. EmailDiscussShare »PrintAAA SEBASTIAN A Port Orange man in early 30s was hospitalized after being struck by lightning while boating with his wife and father in the Indian River Lagoon on Sunday afternoon, officials said. Travis Lamperski was holding the steering wheel of the 17-foot fiberglass boat's steering wheel when lightning stuck about 3 p.m., burning both of his forearms and causing him to collapse unconscious to the bottom of the boat, said Brian Burkeen, assistant chief of Indian River County Fire Rescue. The survivors were able to get the boat to shore. When police arrived, a man from Vero Beach and a woman from Micco were frantically performing CPR on Lamperski on a dock near Suzy's Tiki bar at the Main Street Boat Ramp. Officers used an AED to revive his pulse and breathing. Then he became verbally confused and combative, Burkeen said. Finally the man was evacuated by air to Orlando. Lamperski's wife, Shelley Lamperski, told officers she and her father-in-law, Richard Lamperski, of Micco, were in the front of the boat "when they heard a loud noise and when they looked behind they saw Travis lying back with his arms out, apparently lifeless," according to a police report. Police quoted witnesses as saying they saw a lightning bolt come down and it directly struck Travis Lamperski as the boat was between the landing and an island. He was taken to Orlando Regional Medical Center, but officials said they did not have a condition for him Monday evening. He was the only one injured, but Richard Lamperski told of hearing a loud ringing in his ears. Neither Richard Lamperski nor his daughter-in-law could be reached for comment. © 2011 TCPalm. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten or redistributed. By Elliott Jones, TCPalm.com 8:03 p.m. EDT, August 12, 2011 SEBASTIAN Shelly Lamperski pounded on her husband's chest as their boat circled in the Indian River Lagoon just after a rogue lightning bolt struck him mid-afternoon on Sunday. She repeatedly said, "Don't leave me. Don't leave," according to family members. But Travis Lamperski did, for a while. The jolt of electricity stopped his breathing and heart. It damaged an ear drum and a kidney. He turned pale. His eyes were closed. Video: Man set to testify in gang trial found shot dead (WPTV) Within minutes, he was put on a dock at Suzy's Tiki Bar and a bystander, Barb Milligan, a nurse from Sebastian, performed CPR until his pulse resumed. Emergency personnel rushed the unconscious man to Sebastian River Medical Center. Then he was flown to Orlando Regional Medical Center. The day had begun merrily with lots of chatter. Shelly and Travis Lamperski were visiting from Pittsburgh, where he works as a chiropractor. And his father Richard Lamperski, of Micco, excitedly took them for an outing in his new boat, a 17-foot outboard. They went to the Sebastian Inlet and ate lunch. Then they noticed storm clouds in the distance and decided to play it safe and head back to a dock by Suzy's Tiki Bar on Indian River Drive where Richard Lamperski works. "We laughed about how we missed the storm," he said. In sight of the dock, a single lightning bolt struck about 3 p.m. The bolt hit 30 feet from Travis Lamperski and passed through the water. The boat was fiberglass. But the current went through the boat's motor, metal steering cables and into the wheel he held, instantly knocking him out. His wife was in the front of the 17-foot boat at the time the lightning hit. When she turned around, her 34-year-old husband was just sitting motionless with his arms stretched outright, "like Jesus," his father said. As his father recalled, Shelly Lamperski emotionally pleaded, "Don't leave me. I love you. We have [an 18-month-old] daughter." And she pounded his chest. Each year, lightning kills about 25 people in the United States and many more are severely injured, according to federal reports. And Central Florida is known as the nation's lightning capital. Richard Lamperski remained level-headed. He took the steering wheel of the outboard boat, which was going in circles. He gunned the engine and headed for dock at Suzy's Tiki Bar. He kept yelling, "Call 911, call 911." People rushed out and lifted Travis Lamperski onto the dock and Milligan began CPR. "She brought my son back to life." Richard Lamperski said, "He was dead. I am so grateful for what she did." Travis Lamperski has regained most of his consciousness, but he has no memory of what happened, according to his family. All he recalls is being in a boat and then in Orlando. He is joking "about how the lightning bolt gave him super powers," his father said. And the father jokes about naming his boat "Lucky Strike."

FREDONIA, Ariz., Aug. 5 (UPI) -- A 64-year-old German national was killed and five others injured after a lightning strike on the South Rim of the Grand Canyon in Arizona, officials said. By the time park rangers arrived on the scene, members of the vacationing party were performing CPR on the woman, who was later declared dead, KCSG-TV of St. George, Utah, reported. The incident happened about 1:45 p.m. Thursday near the Mohave viewing area at Grand Canyon National Park, the Northern Arizona News reported. Five members of the dead woman's party were injured and taken to the park's Emergency Operations Center, where they were treated. The dead woman's name wasn't immediately available, the report said. Two people in Halifax were struck by lightning Tuesday night during a severe thunder and lightning storm. They were struck by one of 20,000 bolts that hit Nova Scotia and the coastal area over the course of several hours. Capital Health said both people were taken to Dartmouth General Hospital one was released and the other was transferred to the QEII Health Sciences Centre in Halifax. It's not clear if that person has been released. The two patients were brought in about one hour apart one at 9 p.m. and one at 10 p.m. Environment Canada says more than 2 million strikes are counted across Canada every year. "Those lightning strikes generally cause about 10 deaths during a year and will injure about 160 other people," said Jean-Marc Couturier for Environment Canada. With two people injured in Tuesday night's storm, he said it could easily have been much worse. "That's a pretty good ratio considering the night. There could have been a lot more people out there as well if it would have happened during the afternoon for instance," said Couturier. According to Environment Canada, the safest place to be in a thunderstorm is indoors. As soon as you hear thunder, head inside. The next best place is in your car, but make sure it's not parked near any trees. If you can't get inside, make sure you stay away from tall trees, lamp posts, water or anything that conducts electricity.

Minn. man: 'Lightning strike knocked me to my knees' 7:14 AM, Aug 3, 2011 | comments Twitter Facebook Share Email Print - AAA + Written by Scott Seroka FILED UNDER Local News Related Links Lightning apparently causes Wis. cabin fire If pace continues, drownings in Minn. could reach record level ST. CLOUD, Minn. -- Gerry Lucas agreed to a television interview, figuring it couldn't be all that scary. It was precisely 24 hours after he was hit by lightning while working at a job site in Waite Park. "The lightning hit the building and I just saw a big blue light and it kind of felt like someone pushed me and then I kind of stumbled over 10 feet and dropped to my knees," he recalled from his bed at St. Cloud Hospital. "I was, just like, paralyzed. I couldn't move but I could hear what was going on. It was a helluva jolt," he explained. That buidling he was in was a work shed. Lucas guesses he was about a couple of feet from where the bolt actually landed. He was rushed to the hospital by ambulance. Jerry Lemke was about 500 yards from the site, working inside the concrete building of Power Components, Inc. "Extremely loud crack, it was like a bomb going off. It cracked and it shook the ground," Lemke said. Lucas says the jolt knocked him to his knees and then he started shaking. He couldn't control his legs for a few moments and he started to feel extremely hot. Doctors were monitoring his elevated blood pressure a day later and expected to release him late in the afternoon. Lucas says he was still feeling a little weak but hoped to be back on the job Wednesday. He realizes he's pretty lucky. In 2004, he was wearing a helmet, doing masonary work, when a co-worker accidently dropped a block on his head. His neck was fused. He survived bypass surgery a few years later, and now he's survived a lightning strike. "You know what they say. Your chances are better at getting hit by lightning than winning the lottery. I would like to prove that I could do both." Lucas sent his wife home from the hospital, and asked her to buy some lotto tickets.

(AP) Six employees of a Waite Park company are under observation after a lightning strike near their workplace. The lightning struck about 10 a.m. Monday near the Hardrives Inc. Redi-Mix and pre-cast concrete facility. Hardrives safety coordinator Brian Knutson tells KNSI-AM it's unclear exactly where the lightning hit, but it was close enough to shock and frighten six workers inside the company's building. Knutson says apparently no one was seriously injured, but the six were being taken to a hospital for an examination as a precaution. Man struck by lightning still in critical condition WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 3, 2011 BY MATTHEW MALYSA STAFF WRITER THE RECORD PRINT | E-MAIL A Passaic man who was struck by lightning Monday evening in Gateway National Recreation Area in Sandy Hook remained in critical condition at Monmouth Medical Center on Tuesday evening. The man, whose name hasn't been released, was struck when a severe thunderstorm suddenly overtook the Sandy Hook area, officials said. "Had we had an advanced warning about the weather, we would have evacuated all of our beaches," said John Warren, a spokesman with the Gateway National Recreation Area, who said the park staff monitors the National Weather Service for storm warnings and clears beaches as necessary. Warren said the 32year-old victim had just come out of the water, on a beach that wasn't attended by a lifeguard, when he was struck. Relatives who were on the beach rushed to his side to perform CPR but were unable to resuscitate him, Warren said. Emergency personnel who arrived at the scene with a defibrillator jolted the man back to life and transported him by ambulance to Monmouth Medical Center. "When the call came in, our law enforcement rangers and other staff responded to the scene quickly and efficiently they did what they are trained to do and they were terrific at it," said Warren. Warren said that is imperative that beachgoers understand the dangers associated with being in the water or out in the open during a thunderstorm. "This is not the first time that someone has been struck by lightning on our beach the beach is not a safe a place to be during a thunderstorm," said Warren. The best thing to do in the event of a thunderstorm is to rush to the nearest shelter whether it's a car or something closer, he said. The victim and his family were in the process of leaving the beach to seek shelter but were unable to avoid the lightning, Warren said. "Everything the victim appeared to be doing at the time of the incident appeared safe this was literally an act of nature," said Warren, who explained that the unexpected is exactly why lifeguard protected beaches are the safest option. While the man and his family were on an unprotected beach, lifeguards were still present at adjacent beaches and rushed to his aid. "All we can do now is hope for the best," said Warren.
