MOE should have lightning safety rules for schools THE death of a 16-year-old student at the UPM field in Serdang last Tuesday could have been avoided if the organisers of the inter-school football game had observed the lightning safety rules that had been posted in the mass media for over a decade. In the 2.45pm incident, the victim and his friend had taken shelter under a tree beside the field during a thunderstorm when lightning struck them. The victim died a few hours later in hospital while his friend was in serious condition. The tree, which was struck by lightning, bore the characteristic lightning current path which is marked by splintered bark. According to the security guards, another tree nearby had also been struck by lightning not long ago. This incident should be taken seriously by the Education Ministry since there was a serious breach of safety protocols by the school officials who organised of the game. These officials should have ensured that all the students were evacuated into sturdy buildings before the thunderstorm broke and that they remained there until the storm was well and truly over. The ministry should view this kind of incident seriously since the students are minors under the supervision of adults who should know better. With the thunderstorm season in full gear with the change in monsoon, the public, especially teachers and students, is reminded to strictly follow the lightning safety rules listed below when outdoors: > STOP all outdoor activities and seek shelter as soon as you see dark thunder clouds gathering on the horizon or over the hill. Lightning can strike up to 15km away from the thunder cloud i.e. even before the rain starts!; > RUN for a shelter if you can hear thunder or see a lightning bolt. You are already in danger of being struck by lightning; > DO not wait for the rain to fall before you act. Sometimes, lightning occurs before the rain starts to fall. Never use an umbrella in a lightning storm; > DO not take shelter under a tree or in a tent, a small shed, a kongsi, a rotunda or a roadside food stall. For small shelters, ensure that they have been installed with a proper lightning protection system before you take shelter in them; > TAKE shelter inside a sturdy or large building (e.g. shop or house), inside a metal roofed vehicle (e.g. bus, van or car) or under a large structure (e.g. bridge). Do NOT loiter outside a large building to avoid being struck by debris from lightning damage; > IF there is no proper shelter nearby, get down from an elevated position (eg. mound, hill top or platform). Get into any depression in the ground or in a dry drain; > GET into a Lightning Defensive Position i.e. squat with your feet together and close your ears with your hands. Do NOT lie down. Do NOT touch anyone or any metal objects (eg. fence, gate etc.) near you; > IF it rains, get your clothes wet because wet clothing helps to reduce serious injury to the lightning struck person. Let the current flow over you instead of inside you; > INSIDE a shelter, do NOT touch any metallic object, electric equipment or cable. Do NOT use the telephone unless it is really urgent. Use a mobile phone instead (if available). Keep AWAY from the balcony, verandah, doorway, window, wall or pillar; and > STAY inside your shelter for 30 minutes after the last thunder is heard. Lightning can strike up to 15km away from the thundercloud i.e. even after the rain had stopped! ZAHAR, Kuala Lumpur.

Lightning kills 3 even as rain cools Assam TNN | Apr 5, 2012, 07.44AM IST Article Comments (1) inShare Read More:Regional Meteorological Centre|Met 1 GUWAHATI: Three persons were killed in lightning in different parts of the state even as rain and thunderstorm brought respite from the long spell of dry weather on Wednesday. A youngster and a girl child were killed in Dudhnoi area of Goalpara district, while another person died at Rampur area in Kamrup district when hit by lightning. Cattle and livestock were also killed in the storm. Regional Meteorological Centre here has warned that thunder-squall with a wind speed exceeding 50 kmph is likely to hit one or two places in Assam and Meghalaya in the next 42 hours. Also, thundershowers are likely in Arunachal Pradesh, Assam and Meghalaya. Met officials said thunderstorms and thunder-squall, called Bordoichill in Assamese, is a normal phenomenon in the pre-monsoon phase ahead of Bohag Bihu, the spring festival in the state. Even though the state experienced moderate rain on Wednesday, the downpour brought respite from the sultry prevailing over the last two months. Less rainfall in the pre-monsoon phase, which started from last month, has raised concerns of drought. Dry weather, however, continued in Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura. "Less rainfall in the last two months brought summer much earlier. However, the downpour on Wednesday has brought respite from the heat. The weather has become very pleasant with the heavy rainfall," a city resident said.

The pelting rain didn't bother them at first. But when the wind began to whip, thunder boomed and a half-dozen lightning strikes hit nearby, the crew helping build the $2.4 billion Revel casino knew it had to seek cover. Yet the buckets containing the concrete and a quick-setting agent "kept coming, kept coming, kept coming," according to Dennis Lamond, 35, of Egg Harbor Township. Lamond was working beside Bryan P. Bradley, 40, of Linwood, when Bradley was fatally struck by lightning as he gripped the metal bucket. The strike hit just moments after the men decided they had had enough. They would risk being fired for quitting the time-sensitive job; they feared for their safety. "That day, we were all scared, afraid for our lives because of the storm," recalled Lamond, who was electrocuted by the same bolt that killed Bradley on Sept. 15, 2011. "But we kept working because we were told to." On Wednesday, Bradley's wife, Carmen, 39, filed a wrongful-death lawsuit against Tishman Construction Corp. of New York and Network Construction Co. of Pleasantville. Revel has not been named in the suit. The widow fought back tears in her lawyer's office, saying safety personnel on-site had failed to properly monitor work conditions. She was flanked by Lamond and her husband's other crew member, Joseph A. Forcinito, 56, of Millville, who also was injured by the lightning strike. "My husband and his coworkers were made to work under dangerous working conditions with zero regard for their lives," Carmen Bradley said. Each day her young sons ask, "Why did Daddy die?" she said. Attorney Paul R. D'Amato, who represents the Bradleys and Forcinito, contends that the storm created more than 1,200 cloud-to-ground lightning strikes as it roared across the region. An 80-story crane - adjacent to where the men were working, that aided in the construction of the second tallest building in the state - created a powerful conduit for the lightning, he said. "The families want . . .. and are entitled to answers to the lingering and disturbing questions of why their loved one was put at risk," said D'Amato, who also was cocounsel for the plaintiffs in the fatal 2003 Atlantic City Tropicana Casino Hotel garage collapse that killed four construction workers. "Couldn't they see the sky was crackling with lightning bolts?" asked Mark Roddy, who represents Lamond. Forcinito said supervisors showed up midway through the storm with rain gear, but the men already were soaking wet, and no one gave any direction about seeking cover. Members of various construction trade unions who were on the job said there was an inherent push to finish the job quickly. Revel officials promised the resort would open by Memorial Day 2012. It had a "soft opening" Monday; a grand opening is scheduled for May. In a statement issued Wednesday, Network Construction said the lawsuit "wasn't unexpected." The fatal lightning strike was an "act of nature . . . a freak accident," according to Robert Polisano, the company's president. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration last month fined Network $3,000 for violating federal regulations that say when a local storm warning has been issued, safety personnel must determine whether personnel and equipment must be secured. Tishman officials declined to comment other than a one-sentence statement noting that Tishman had not been cited by OSHA or found to be at fault by entities investigating the incident last year. Lightning directed by laser beams 30 March 2012 by Jeff Hecht Magazine issue 2858. Subscribe and save IT'S not quite Zeus, but at least it's not entirely myth. Lasers have been used for the first time to trigger and divert lightning bolts. The idea of using a powerful laser to create a low-resistance path through the atmosphere - a virtual lightning rod - gained momentum in the 1990s. Lasers were developed that could generate terawatts (trillions of watts) of power for femtoseconds (millionths of billionths of a second). These created pulses so intense that they ripped electrons from air molecules, forming channels of ionised air along the beam path. These paths focused the laser light in high intensity zones called filaments, which kept the air ionised long after the laser passed through, but failed to trigger or direct lightning. In 2008, a group led by André Mysyrowicz of the applied optics laboratory at ENSTA ParisTech in France took a trailer-sized laser to New Mexico for field experiments with clouds. The group found that its laser filaments increased electrical activity in storm clouds, but did not trigger lightning. Now the group has reached two milestones on the road to practical lightning protection with a more compact laser. In one experiment in a military lab in Toulouse, France, they set up a high-voltage discharge with two possible targets about 2.5 metres away. With the laser off, the artificial lightning always hit the closer target. But with the laser on, generating a filament path to the farther target, the discharge went where it was directed. In a second experiment, Mysyrowicz's team aimed the laser beam across 50 metres of a lab, passing 5 to 20 centimetres from a lightning-producing electrode and an oppositely charged electrode. Usually, lightning jumps straight from electrode to electrode, but with the laser on, the discharge jumped to the laser filament and followed it before jumping to the second electrode (AIP Advances, DOI: 10.1063/1.3690961). Controlling the lightning without making contact with the electrodes makes this more like a real-world situation, says Jérôme Kasparian of the University of Geneva, Switzerland. "In the clouds you don't really have an electrode you can touch," he says. But in the real world, he adds, the targets are far more distant. Mysyrowicz's group is planning more field experiments with the laser. Kasparian thinks success will require a more powerful laser, and the development of pulses shaped precisely for guiding lightning through the air.

One child confirmed dead after lightning strikes two in Butler County Published 6:43pm Friday, March 30, 2012 Email Comments One boy has died from a lightning strike after a storm cell passed through Butler County this afternoon according to Butler County Sheriff Kenny Harden. We received a call at 4:20 p.m. in reference to people struck by lightning off East Dogwood Trail, Harden said. We got there and there were two young boys that had been in the wooded area and lightning struck a tree. Harden said that the boys were at the base of the tree when the lightning struck. Both of them were transported to Georgiana Hospital and one was pronounced there at the hospital, Harden said. The other one is stable. Harden said the names will not be released at this time because he doesnt know if all of the family has been notified. The two individuals were about three miles north of Georgiana at the intersection of Highways 31 and 106 when the lightning strike happened said Eric Ebensen, a meteorologist out of the National Weather Service in Mobile. We had a thunderstorm move through the central part of the county and there was some lightning, not a whole lot, but there was some, Ebensen said. According to Harden, the lightning storm came upon the area quickly. Its a terrible tragedy that happened, Harden said. You just dont know the words to say about it. Email Comments

That's the woman at the top of the Court Street fountain in Montgomery and her watery home has just had a facelift. BUTLER COUNTY, Alabama The name of the 12-year-old Greenville boy who died after being struck by lightning Friday has been released. Butler County Coroner Wayne Garlock said Aven Brett Schofield died shortly after being taken to Georgiana Hospital. Another boy also suffered injuries from the strike and was taken to Georgiana Hospital. He was transferred to UAB Hospital for additional treatment, but has been released. The Greenville Advocate reports that the boys were standing at the base of a pine tree in a wooded area off East Dogwood Trail when they were struck about 4:20 p.m. Garlock said Schofield took the brunt of the lightning strike. Butler County Sheriff Kenny Harden told WSFA the boys were planning to go to a birthday party a short time later. Garlock said there was a third boy who was treated for minor injuries at Georgiana Hospital, but the coroner wasn't sure if the boy was with the other two. "I don't know where he was at in relationship to the lightning strike," Garlock said.

The victim, William F. Isles, was coherent and used an amateur radio to call out for help. An assistant in the KAKEland Weatherplex heard his call on our "ham" radio and called 911. He was speaking with Sedgwick County EMS upon their arrival but was taken to St. Francis in critical condition. The storm produced extreme lightning, torrential rain, and hail up to two inches in diameter. KANSAS CITY, Kansas (Reuters) - A Kansas man was struck by lightning hours after buying three Mega Millions lottery tickets on Thursday, proving in real life the old saying that a gambler is more likely to be struck down from the sky than win the jackpot. Bill Isles, 48, bought three tickets in the record $656 million lottery Thursday at a Wichita, Kansas grocery store. On the way to his car, Isles said he commented to a friend: "I've got a better chance of getting struck by lightning" than winning the lottery. Later at about 9:30 p.m., Isles was standing in the back yard of his Wichita duplex, when he saw a flash and heard a boom -- lightning. "It threw me to the ground quivering," Isles said in a telephone interview on Saturday. "It kind of scrambled my brain and gave me an irregular heartbeat." Isles, a volunteer weather spotter for the National Weather Service, had his portable ham radio with him because he was checking the skies for storm activity. He crawled on the ground to get the radio, which had been thrown from his hand. Isles had been talking to other spotters on the radio and called in about the lightning strike. One of the spotters, a local television station intern, called 911. Isles was taken by ambulance to a hospital and kept overnight for observation. Isles said doctors wanted to make sure his heartbeat was back to normal. He suffered no burns or other physical effects from the strike, which he said could have been worse because his yard has a power line pole and wires overhead. "But for the grace of God, I would have been dead," Isles said. "It was not a direct strike." Isles said he had someone buy him ten more tickets to the Mega Millions lottery on Friday night. While one of the three winning tickets was sold in Kansas, Isles was not a winner. Officials of the Mega Millions lottery, which had the largest prize in U.S. history, said that the odds of winning lottery were about 176 million to one. Americans have a much higher chance of being struck by lightning, at 775,000 to one over the course of a year, depending on the part of the country and the season, according to the National Weather Service. Isles, who is out of work after being laid off last June by a furniture store, said he did once win $2,000 in the lottery and will keep playing. "The next time I will use the radio while sitting in the car," he said. (Editing by Greg McCune)

Weston father struck by lightning ALISON BRANLEY 30 Mar, 2012 04:00 AM A MAN struck by lightning at Weston was recovering in hospital last night. Chris Phillips, a 42-year-old excavator and father of two, was reportedly doing some fencing at his Weston Street property when he was struck in a sudden thunderstorm just after 4.30pm. Mr Phillips was thrown two metres from the strike. He was recovering in John Hunter Hospital in a serious but stable condition last night. His wife Kerrie was unable to speak much last night but told the Newcastle Herald Mr Phillips was going to be fine. A NSW Ambulance spokeswoman said it was common for lightning strike victims to suffer entry and exit wounds and possible burns. Neighbours said last night the storm struck quickly, bringing hail and flash flooding. Many remembered hearing a distinctively loud thunder crack about 4.30pm. Shane Reeves was next door with his wife Melissa and two children when the storm hit. There was this bang and I leapt off the lounge chair, Mr Reeves said. I thought something exploded in my back shed, it didnt sound like thunder. It was the largest bang Ive ever heard. Mr Reeves said he could not believe how close the thunder clap sounded to his house. I thought it was going to blow my back windows out, he said. I cant explain that bang. It was too close for my liking. Mrs Reeves said she was amazed last night to think it could have accompanied the lightning strike that injured their neighbour. Theyre really nice people, Mrs Reeves said. I hope he is OK. Mr Phillips runs Able Excavations Newcastle, an excavating and earth moving contracting business in Weston. The Australian Bureau of Meteorology issued a severe storm warning for NSW and the ACT yesterday. It is understood yesterdays thunderstorm was mainly experienced around Cessnock.

(The Press of Atlantic City/Staff Photo by Michael Ein) Posted: Saturday, March 24, 2012 1:30 am | Updated: 8:09 am, Sat Mar 24, 2012. By DEREK HARPER, Staff Writer | PLEASANTVILLE The Occupational Safety and Health Administration recently fined a Pleasantville company $3,000 following the death of a construction worker at Atlantic Citys Revel casino site in September. Bryan Bradley, a 40-year-old father of two, was killed by lightning Sept. 15. Network Construction was cited for violating federal regulations that require once a local storm warning has been issued that a person in charge determine if the manufacturers recommendations to secure equipment must be implemented. This specific incident was cited under OSHA regulations dealing with cranes and derricks. OSHA classified the violation as serious. Bradleys brother, Butch Bradley, said he was glad the incident was investigated, but the penalty was inadequate. I appreciate they (OSHA) did their job, and they did it well, and they found an outcome that was obvious to everyone in town: The jobsite should have been closed, Butch Bradley said. You know, youre talking about $3,000 and my brothers life, Bradley said. He added later, Whats the difference between $100 and $3,000? Why dont you give me a $50 Wawa gift certificate as a fine? The afternoon he died, Bryan Bradley and two other men were on the fifth-floor roof deck, pouring concrete from a hopper that had been lifted to them by a tower crane, according to the OSHA Citation and Notification of Penalty. Nearly a half-hour earlier, a Special Weather Statement was issued by the National Weather Service warning of strong thunderstorms in the area, read the citation signed by OSHA Area Director Paula Dixon-Roderick. A quickly moving thunderstorm rolled in. A bolt of lightning is believed to have struck the basket of the cement pourer while Bradley held the handle. Another man suffered hand injuries. OSHA records show the agency concluded the incident exposed seven people to danger. It is unclear who the other people were. The agency issued the violation Nov. 19, and Network Construction formally contested the fine Dec. 12. The citation became public this month once the six-month window for the investigation closed. The federal agency has not previously cited the company, according to OSHA records. Company President Bob Polisano did not return a call seeking comment. Butch Bradley said he learned a new respect for construction workers who built Atlantic City and experienced the warmth of the area community in time following his brothers death. A Linwood native who now lives in Los Angeles, Bradley said, You dont really realize how when something like that happens, everyone comes out of the woodwork to help. It made the whole situation a lot easier to deal with. Bradley said that he and his brothers wife have since established the Bryan P. Bradley Fund for Fallen and Injured Workers in his brothers honor. The fund, based in Linwood, is currently organizing a comedy show at the Borgata Hotel Casino and Spa to be held on the anniversary of his brothers death. Ask Josh Fitzpatrick: Snow Facts Font Size: The lightning shot pictured above is from South Point, Ohio from earlier in March. Lightning In the United States, there are an estimated 25 million lightning flashes each year. During the past 30 years, lightning killed an average of 66 people per year. This is more than the average of deaths per year caused by tornadoes. Yet because lightning usually claims only one or two victims at a time and does not cause mass destruction of property, it is underrated as a risk. While documented lightning injuries in the United States average about 300 per year, undocumented injuries likely much higher. Watch for Developing Thunderstorms: Thunderstorms are most likely to develop on spring or summer days but can occur year round. As the sun heats the air, pockets of warmer air start to rise and cumulus clouds form. Continued heating can cause these clouds to grow vertically into towering cumulus clouds, often the first sign of a developing thunderstorm. An Approaching Thunderstorm: Lightning can strike as far as 10 miles from area where it is raining. That's about the distance you can hear thunder. If you can hear thunder, you are within striking distance. Seek safe shelter immediately. Lightning Safety If you can see lightning or hear thunder you are already at risk! Most lightning injuries and fatalities occur when people are caught outdoors in the summer months during the afternoon and evening. Outdoor Activities: Most lightning deaths and injuries occur in the summer. Postpone outdoor activities if thunderstorms are imminent. Move to a sturdy enclosed building. Get inside a hardtop vehicle and keep the windows rolled up. Avoid touching metal. If caught outdoors and no shelter is nearby: Stay away from tall trees. If there is no shelter crouch in the open, keeping twice as far away from a tree as it is tall. Avoid being the tallest object around. Get as low as you can but do not lie prone on the ground. Squat on the balls of your feet to have minimum contact with the ground. Place your hands over your ears and your head between your knees. Get out of the water. If caught in a boat, crouch down in the center of the boat away from metal hardware. Swimming, wading, snorkeling and scuba diving are NOT safe. Don't stand in puddles, even if wearing rubber boots. Move away from a group of people. Stay several yards away from each other. Don't share a bleacher bench or huddle in a group. If you are outdoors when you see or hear a thunderstorm coming or your hair stands on end, immediately stop your activities and seek safe shelter immediately! 30/30 Rule The first 30 means if, between flash and bang, you count to 30 or less, you are in danger and should go to safe shelter. Flash-to-bang: When you see the FLASH, Count the seconds to the BANG, Every 5 seconds equals 1 mile. Divide by 5 to give the distance in miles from you to the lightning. 30 seconds - suspend all outdoor activities (lightning strike was 6 miles away or less) and seek safe shelter If you count 15 seconds or less, a lightning strike could occur where you are (3 miles away or less). The second 30 means wait 30 minutes from the last flash or thunder to establish "all clear. Indoor Activities: Do not use any electrical appliances (except those used for weather information) and unplug unnecessary ones. Turn off air conditioners and computers to protect them from power surges. Do not use a corded telephone except in an emergency. Do not bathe or shower during a thunderstorm. Avoid contact with anything that conducts electricity. Stay away from windows and doors. Avoid contact with concrete walls or floors which may contain metal reinforcing bars; carports or open garages; covered patios; washing your hands or doing dishes. When inside, wait 30 minutes after the last strike, before going out again. No place is completely safe from lightning, but some places are safer than others. Although some victims are struck directly by the main lightning stroke, many victims are struck as the current moves in and along the ground. Helping a Lightning Strike Victim: If a person is struck by lightning, call 911 and get medical care immediately. Cardiac arrest and irregularities, burns, and nerve damage are common in cases where people are struck by lightning. However, with proper treatment, including CPR if necessary, most victims survive a lightning strike. You are in no danger helping a lightning victim. Eutawville man struck by lightning respects it a lot more now Story Discussion By MARTHA ROSE BROWN, T&D Correspondent | Posted: Monday, April 2, 2012 6:15 am | (0) Comments Font Size: Default font size Larger font size T&D CORRESPONDENT MARTHA ROSE BROWN Tom Connor of Eutawville sustained about a three-inch scratch to his forehead when he was knocked to the ground by lightning on March 24. Other than the scratch and some tingling and burning in three fingers on his left hand, hes okay. EUTAWVILLE It all took place in a matter of seconds, a Eutawville man says of his frightening encounter with lightning on Saturday, March 24 as severe thunderstorms rolled through the area. Tom Connor and his wife had returned home at around 11:30 p.m. from the restaurant near Eutaw Springs which Mrs. Connor operates. When we got home, the thunder and lightning were right on top of us, Connor said. He said he was about two steps away from the bumper of his truck when he heard a loud crash of thunder and a bright flash of lightning. The next thing he knew, he had been thrown several feet from where he had been standing and was lying at the front wall of his home. I couldnt move my left arm for several seconds, Connor said. And then I rolled and tried to get myself oriented, he said. By that point, he managed to bend his left arm at the elbow but his arm felt like it was on fire, Connor said. After he regained his senses, he was able to stand up and walk inside the house. His only visible injury from the lightning strike was an approximately three-inch scratch on his forehead above his right eye. When I woke up Sunday morning, all of the joints in my body just ached, Connor said. The burning sensation in his arm has subsided, but three fingers on his left hand continue to tingle and burn, he said. Id never been really afraid of lightning, but I respect it a lot more now, Connor said. Contact the writer: marfawose@aol.com. The Paulding County Sheriffs Office offers these tips for dealing with it. 5:15 am Email Print Comment Upload Photos and Videos The Paulding County Sheriffs Office reminds residents that there is little they can do to reduce the risk of being struck by lightning if outside during a thunderstorm. The only completely safe action to take is to move inside a safe building or vehicle. Buildings A safe building is one that is fully enclosed with a roof, walls and floor, and has plumbing or wiring. Examples of safe buildings include a home, school, church, hotel, office building or shopping center. If lightning should directly strike a building with electricity and/or plumbing, the dangerous electrical current from the flash will typically travel through the wiring and/or plumbing, and then into the ground. This is why you should stay away from showers, sinks, hot tubs and electronic equipment such as TVs, radios, corded telephones and computers. Unsafe buildings include carports, open garages, covered patios, picnic shelters, beach pavilions, golf shelters, tents of any kind, baseball dugouts, sheds and greenhouses. Vehicles A safe vehicle is any fully enclosed metal-topped vehicle such as a hard-topped car, minivan, bus, truck, etc. If you drive into a thunderstorm, slow down and use extra caution. If possible, pull off the road into a safe area. Do not leave the vehicle during a thunderstorm. Unsafe vehicles include convertibles, golf carts, riding mowers, open cab construction equipment and boats without cabins. Lightning risk reduction outdoors Most importantly, stay away from high points or anything that will act as a conductor. Tall or isolated trees, water, telephone poles or metal structures can all attract lightning strikes. Avoid open areas where you serve as the tallest object around. Your best bet if you are unable to take shelter indoors is to find a depression or other low point where you can crouch in lightning position. Lightning position involves crouching with your feet planted squarely on the ground, with your head lower than your shoulders. If you have a sleeping pad or other insulator to place under your feet, it can help protect you from ground current. Do not stand underneath an exposed rock ledge or in the entrance of a cave. If the earth above you is struck, the electricity may arc through you in order to reach the ground. If youre traveling in a group when a thunderstorm hits, spread out as you take cover. Thirty to fifty feet between group members should ensure that someone will be available to administer CPR and first aid in the event of a strike. Providing first aid after a lighting strike In the event of a strike, it is important to be prepared for significant injuries of almost any type. If you see someone struck by lightning, it is imperative to check their heartbeat and breathing immediately. CPR has a phenomenal success rate among lightning victims. In cases of lighting injury, CPR can have success rates of up to 90 percent. As such, normal rules of triage do not apply. If you find someone without a pulse or respirations after a lightning strike, begin CPR immediately. Lightning can be deadly and should be taken seriously. Having to take shelter from a storm during an outdoor activity can seem like an inconveniencehowever, it is the difference between life and death. A good rule of thumb is to stay indoors until 30 minutes have passed after the last clasp of thunder or flash of lightning observed. Dont be afraid to be the person who speaks upthe life you save may be your own! Related Topics: Lightning, Paulding County Sheriff's Office, and Severe Weather

What it's like to get hit by lightning Larry Bazzle stuck his arm out his front door to gauge the size of hail falling during a storm last week he was struck by lightning. By Ann Efimetz Modified: Wednesday, March 28, 2012 8:36 AM EDT Originally Published: Thursday, March 29, 2012 JAMESCITY Larry Bazzle described being struck by lightning last week as getting hit by a truck that was really hot. Late last Wednesday afternoon a thunderstorm passed though his Williamsburg West neighborhood, spawning hail and severe thunder and lightning. Bazzle, 52, was concerned about hail damaging the new truck he had parked in the driveway. As the storm raged, he stuck his hand out the aluminum door on the front of his house. I wanted to see how big the hail was to see if I needed to put my truck under the carport, Bazzle recalled in an interview Tuesday. The next thing I knew, it was like someone took a camera and flashed it right in my face and a bomb blew up. The jolt sent him careening backward, landing on the living room floor where his mother found him. He was conscious, but in pain. His mother drove him to Sentara Williamsburg Regional Medical Center where he underwent a series of tests, mostly on his heart. He was treated and released. There were no long-lasting effects, save a bruise on his arm where the bolt struck. He reports feeling stiff and still has a considerable amount of pain. He returned to the doctor Tuesday for additional tests to ensure there were no long-lasting repercussions. Each year around 85 people die across the United States from lightning strikes. They can occur indoors or out. Bazzle theorizes lightning hit his home in two places. Upstairs, three television sets and a computer were destroyed. The other spot was at the front door. The doctor said I was extremely lucky, Bazzle said. Usually there are two outcomes to a lightning strike. I got the good one.

VideoPhoto Teachers Aide Struck by Lightning Published : Wednesday, 28 Mar 2012, 4:51 PM CDT Fil Alvarado FOX 4 News Adapted for Web by Tracy DeLatte | myFOXdfw.com FRISCO, Texas - A teachers aide in Frisco was struck by lighting a few weeks ago while she helped students arriving at school. Now she is shocked the school district wont help pay her medical bills. Debra Anderhub remembers driving to work on March 20 through a pretty bad storm. Thats what really frightened me, the first bolt I saw early that morning, she said. The teachers aide at Rogers Elementary in the Frisco Independent School District said once she got on campus she began helping students into school and out of the storm as their parents dropped them off. It was the worst lightning storm in a long, long time, she said. She was holding an umbrella out in the rain and wearing her rubber boots. In four years Ive only worn my rain boots one time, she said. Once the kids were inside, Anderhub hurried to go back in too. I turned around and my hair stood up and felt really strange, she said. And then it happened. She was struck by a loud, deafening crack of lightning. She felt it go through her body. It was horrible. It was like youre on fire. It wasnt an electrical feeling. It was more like fire, she said. Anderhubs hand was burned where she held the metal shaft of the umbrella. But she believes the rubber boots saved her life. I could have been fried. Ive heard that from doctors and the emergency room. I know people are amazed. I am too, she said. Anderhub made two separate visits to the emergency room. Doctors also recommended she see a specialist to find out what other injuries the lightning strike may have caused. But she cant afford to go. She had opted out of the school districts insurance plan because should couldnt afford it. Shes dreading the medical bills. The workers compensation claim Anderhub filed was denied because she was told her injuries were caused by an act of God. And the school district said it cant help because of strict legal restrictions on how it can use taxpayer money. She is disappointed the district wont do more, but admitted her principal at Rogers Elementary has shown a lot of compassion. The school has started a fund to help her get well enough to return to work. It was bad out there, Debra Anderhub remembered. It was maybe the worst lightning storm Ive ever seen. Even before the lightning bolt hit her, Anderhub said she had a bad feeling while outside of Rogers Elementary School in Frisco. The teachers aide had started her day on whats called car patrol helping special needs students get to class. When I turned around I felt the hair on the back of neck and my head stand up. A storm was overhead on the morning of March 20 and then there was the electrical discharge. It wasnt hard for the 52-year-old woman to recall the pain. When it hit me I felt that I was on fire, she said. I felt like my eyes were laying on my cheek and my heart was exploding. Anderhub suffered bruising and serious burns to her hands and eyes. She believes her rubber soled boots and strong faith in God saved her life. Given that Anderhub was at work when she was injured, you would think she would have no trouble getting financial help for her injuries& but thats not the case. The Frisco Independent School District makes insurance available for employees, but Anderhub wasnt covered because she thought it was too expensive. Without insurance coverage, Anderhub made her claim through the states workers compensation program. It was denied. While Anderhub said shes not bitter or angry, she admitted, Im very disappointed and Im very hurt by it. Anderhub said she was told that acts of God are not covered by workers compensation. But an exception could be made if, &the employment exposes the employee to a greater risk of injury from an act of God. While the medical bills pile up, pain from Anderhubs lightning burns still havent subsided. To add insult to injury, Anderhub said she was particularly offended by the response of one Frisco ISD official. He made the statement get your teachers at your school to take up a collection. That hurt me as much as the lightning strike, because its not my teachers responsibility. After whats being called an act of God, Anderhub says she has no one else to turn to. Its real disheartening and I just know Gods taking care of me, because this could have been a lot worse, she said. Neither the Frisco ISD nor state workers comp officials responded to CBS 11 News requests for comment. "It just reminds me I'm here, and I'm alive, and I'm good. And God's good." It's a reminder of a stormy spring day; March 20, 2012, to be exact. The 52-year old teacher's assistant was working car duty outside Rogers Elementary in Frisco when she was struck by lightning. "It just went through the whole left side, like a huge electrical shock," Anderhub said. "I felt like my eyes were pulled out and sitting on my cheeks." Within days, the world started to fade from those eyes. "Things went blurry, and then it was just like the lights went out," she said. "I just sat here or laid in the bed. Couldn't read, couldn't drive. Couldn't work the microwave. Couldn't do anything." "She was right on the cusp of being legally blind," said eye surgeon Dr. Dennis Goldsberry. He explained that cataracts are a common side-effect of a lightning strike; not that lightning strikes are common they are about a one-in-a million occurrence. Debra Anderhub's is the only case he's ever seen. "In Debra's case, I think the combination of the bright flash from the lightning in combination with the heat was probably what caused the damage to her lens," Dr. Goldsberry said. Not knowing if he could fix the damage and without promise of any compensation, as Anderhub didn't have medical insurance Dr. Goldsberry replaced her cloudy cataracts with lens implants. "The result is, she sees 20/15 without any glasses today," the surgeon said with a smile. "And, I'm so thankful," Anderhub added. "As a matter of fact, one of my kids at school said, I heard him tell another student, 'You better beware, because Ms. Anderhub can see 200 miles away. She can see everything you do now!' So I love that!" Anderhub's medical bills have been paid by the state's workers compensation program. She still has memory and nerve problems from the lightning strike, along with a tiny scar on her elbow where the bolt left her body. But she has her sight along with that folded up reminder of how fleeting and fortunate life can be. E-mail jstjames@wfaa.com

Lightning Strikes Local Man While Working in Garage TOOLS EMAIL THIS ARTICLE FACEBOOK DIGG PRINT THIS ARTICLE By Nick Hausen Story Created: Mar 16, 2012 at 5:40 PM CDT Story Updated: Mar 16, 2012 at 8:59 PM CDT MULKEYTOWN -- When lightning strikes, we've always been told to head indoors. That's what one local man did Thursday night, but it wasn't enough to keep him safe. On Thursday night, many saw a dazzling display of cloud to ground lightning, but one area man got a much closer look than he ever wanted. "I feel lucky, I feel real lucky" said Joshua Cook who was struck by lightning. He was working on his car when he was struck, kneeling here on his dry garage floor, door closed, when a bolt of lightning hit a tree next to his home. "I was under the vehicle and I seen a flash of light and that's the last thing that I remember about the strike," explained Joshua. He was thrown back three feet and landed next to a tractor in the garage, unconscious. His dad, Jerry Cook, was in the garage when it happened, but he thought Josh was playing a joke on him. He quickly realized it was no joke. "Once I got him on his back, I started doing chest compressions," said Jerry Cook. "I told Mike and started screaming to someone to call 911." Jerry gave CPR to his son for more than seven minutes before he finally got a pulse. "To sit there and see your son, which in my opinion was dead and me trying to bring him back, I've never experienced anything like it and I pray to God that I never do, because I'll never forget," said Jerry Cook. The shock of it all hasn't really hit Joshua yet. "It's like it didn't happen because I don't remember any of it, I'm ok with it," explained Joshua. He is recovering well, and has no signs of the lightning strike on his body. While he is still in the hospital, he is expected to be released by Saturday. Florida Woman Struck By Lightning..."wasn't raining or even stormy" Lucky escape: Mrs Deas' legs were paralyzed for 30 minutes after she was struck by lightning. She and her husband James were knocked out by the blast By: Kris Allred | WSAV-TV Published: March 30, 2012 | 0 Comments | Post a Comment A Florida woman has been struck by lightning in a Toys R Us car park, and it wasn't raining or even stormy. Donna Deas was exiting her car in Hialeah, Florida, when a bolt suddenly hit thie ground near where she was standing. Both she and her husband James were knocked out by the blast, which occurred on March 15. 'It was just overcast and it was just, bam! It was like in a split second,' Donna says. Donna was climbing out of her car when she was struck. "I could feel my legs on fire," she says, whose legs were completely paralysed for 30 minutes after the incident. "My husband fell on the ground. I'm telling him, 'Don't move, don't move. Just wait, just wait.'" This type of lightning strike is called a 'bolt out of the blue.' Contrary to popular belief, there doesn't have to be rain, or even stormy clouds, for you to be at risk. Lightning Facts 1. In the past ten years almost 400 people have been killed by strikes. 2. If you hear thunder or see lightning, you are at risk. Get indoors. 3. Lightning can strike up to ten miles away from the location of a storm. 4. Stay away from windows, as lightning can come through them. 5. If outside, do not take shelter under trees. 6. Stay inside for 30 minutes after you heard the last roll of thunder

(WISH) - Four softball players were injured when lightning struck just before practice in Seymour on Thursday. Seymour Senior Carlee Westfall told 24-Hour News 8 the skies were clear when the girls softball team headed out on the field around 4:15 PM. The next thing she knew, she saw a flash of light, then saw her teammate fall to the ground and start shaking. Then she said, She just laid there. Westfall said she and another friend started running toward the girl, when she thought another stroke of lightning hit right between them. She described the feeling of being hit, We felt our bodies vibrating, and added, We didnt really know what to expect. Westfall said her legs went numb. A high school freshman was taken to Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health in critical condition after the strike at the high school field in the southern Indiana city. She is identified by friends as freshman Emily Bobb. Hospital officials said Friday morning her condition was upgraded to good. The three others, including Westfall, were taken to Shenck Medical Center in Seymour with non-life-threatening injuries, but were released later in the evening, said Stephanie Furlow, director of marketing at the center. Westfall told 24-Hour News 8 late Thursday that Bobb had been taken off a ventilator at Riley and was speaking, even asking when she could play softball again. Seymour Police Chief Bill Abbott told tribtown.com that the skies were clear at the time of the lightning strike. He and the school's athletic director both declined to release further information about the incident or the girls' identities. Westfall said a meeting is planned with the team before school on Friday. Next week, the school is on spring break. The other girls hurt were Kelsy Nolting, a junior, and Kristin George, a sophomore. Though parts of far southeastern Indiana were under a severe thunderstorm watch at the time, Jackson County was under no weather alerts at the time of the strike, which happened at about 4:15 p.m. Thursday. A strong storm did move through the area shortly after, however, according to Forecast 8 meteorologists.

MUNCIE - Blue skies overhead doesn't mean there's no risk of lightning. Students playing ball on the Ball State University campus Friday thought there was no chance of a lightning bolt striking them at that moment. But a "bolt from the blue" could strike. "That's crazy," some students said. "They're not particularly common. Lightning bolts can strike 25 miles ahead of the storm," said WTHR Severe Weather Specialist Dr. David Call, a Ball State professor. It happened at Seymour High School's softball field Thursday. There was no sign of a storm, but lightning struck freshman Emily Bobb. "Lightning strike knocked her to the ground, they began CPR immediately," said School Superintendent Dr. Teran Armstrong. Bobb was helped by a doctor across the street who saw the strike happen and climbed a fence to help her. "She was not breathing when I go there. She turned blue, her heartbeat was very, very shallow," said Dr. Levi Nehrt. Bobb is listed in good condition at Riley Hospital. Three of her teammates felt tingling. In 1999, it happened to a man in Carmel, who was hit by lightning kicking the ball around on the lawn, with no severe storms in the area. But why? "The top of the storm starts to roll in overhead very quietly because it's not raining yet and, all of a sudden, it sends lightning bolts from the blue sky," said Dr. Call. Seymour school officials say no rules were broken. Like other schools, it has a policy to take cover at the first sign of lightning. "The safety measures we give work in most circumstances, but once in awhile, you just have bad luck," Dr. Call said. WeatherBug sent images to Eyewitness News Meteorologist Chris Wright, showing the first two lightning pulses recorded seven miles from Seymour High School. The lightning was still up in the clouds at that point. But 15 minutes later, Emily Bobb was hit by a cloud-to-ground bolt. WeatherBug says the cloud-to-cloud detectors might give organizations like schools and athletic teams better advance notice of active, but unseen, lightning riding far ahead of the storm.

Lighting strikes South Boston DMV; employee gets a jolt from desk WRITTEN BY STAFF 11:38 AM 03/01/12 Customers wait there turn to be served outside the DMV 2Go Mobile Office Thursday morning at the DMV. A local Department of Motor Vehicles employee experienced a significant electrical shock resulting from a lighting strike during a severe thunderstorm Wednesday around noon. Although shaken after receiving the jolt while sitting at his desk, the employee was not seriously injured and did not have to be transported to the hospital, according to Halifax Emergency Service Coordinator Kirby Saunders. Emergency service personnel were called to the Department of Motor Vehicles office on Hamilton Boulevard at 12:02 p.m. after receiving a report of someone being struck by lightning. Units from South Boston Fire Department and the Halifax County Rescue Squad responded to the scene along with members from the South Boston Police Department. Upon arrival, Saunders said they were able to determine that only one DMV employee had experienced what was described as an electrical shock while sitting at his desk. This occurred simultaneously with a lightning strike at the front of the office, Saunders said. Officials noted minor damage to the exterior of the building and to two electrical outlets inside. DMV employees reported seeing smoke from the two outlets and immediately evacuated the buildings occupants Wednesday afternoon. According to Melanie Stokes, a spokesperson for the Virginia DMV, the South Boston DMV had to close unexpectedly because of the damage resulting from the storm. The DMV had been scheduled to remain closed on Thursday for repairs; however, the DMV office was open Thursday, and one employee said they would try to remain open as long as the system was working. The DMV 2 Go mobile office was parked outside of the DMV Thursday providing emergency services. Customers also were able to conduct business through DMVs website at www.dmvNOW.com where more than 31 transactions are available. The National Weather Service office confirmed lighting activity in the immediate area around at the time of the DMV strike, Halifax County Emergency Services Coordinator Kirby Saunders said Wednesday. Lightning is one of the most underrated severe weather hazards, yet ranks as one of the top weather killers in the United States. Lightning strikes in America kill about 58 people and injure hundreds of others each year. The safest place to be when lighting threatens is in a substantial structure with electricity and plumbing, Saunders said. However, when inside during a thunderstorm, Saunders urged people to avoid contact with anything that could conduct a lightning strike, including anything that plugs into a wall outlet, corded phones, plumbing, metal doors and window frames. This means do not take a shower or bath during a thunderstorm. Battery-operated computers and cell phones are fine. Generally, enclosed metal vehicles (not convertibles) with the windows rolled up, provide good shelter from lightning, the emergency services coordinator added. If a storm is approaching, get inside immediately. Gazebos, rain or picnic shelters, baseball dugouts, convertible vehicles, and golf carts do not provide protection from lightning. When lightning can be seen or heard, the danger is already present, he added.

'Gigantic Jet', Rare Lightning Bolt, Spotted During 2010 China Thunderstorm (PHOTO) Posted: 02/27/2013 5:05 pm EST GET GREEN ALERTS: SIGN UP FOLLOW: Extreme Weather, Video, China Gigantic Jet, China Gigantic Jet Lightning, China Lightning Photo, Gigantic Jet, Gigantic Jet Lightning, Gigantic Jet Photo, Jet Lightning, Jet Lightning Photo, Lightning Photo, Green News From Elizabeth Howell, OurAmazingPlanet Contributor: A rare glimpse of a "gigantic jet" a huge and mysterious burst of lightning that connects a thunderstorm with the upper atmosphere was made over China in 2010 and was recently described by scientists. The gigantic jet took place in eastern China on Aug. 12, 2010 the farthest a ground-based one has ever been observed from the equator, according to the research team. Previous jets were mainly seen in tropical or subtropical regions, but this one took place around 35 degrees latitude, about the same as the southern part of Tennessee in the United States. A gigantic jet captured above a storm in North Carolina in 2009. "This is the first report from mainland China," lead researcher Jing Yang, an atmospheric scientist with the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Beijing, told OurAmazingPlanet. The results were recently published in the Chinese Science Bulletin. Researchers got a good look at the storm using a variety of tools, including Doppler radar data and weather pictures in the infrared band of radiation. The gigantic jet peaked at about 55 miles (89 kilometers) above the ground, far above the cloudtops that were measured with Doppler radar at an altitude of 11 miles (17 km). [Infographic: Earth's Atmosphere Top to Bottom] Yang added that her team had possibly seen another gigantic jet in the same area during a different thunderstorm, but said they needed to recheck the data to confirm. "It's not as clear as this one if it is a gigantic jet or not," she said. It wasn't until the last century that electrical activity above thunderclouds was scientifically proven, although rumors based on undocumented observations circulated long before that time. These electrical discharges can take several forms, such as sprites (orange-red flashes) and blue jets, which appear as blue cones. The first confirmed gigantic jet was reported in 2001, after American researchers saw a blue jet reaching 44 miles (70 km) above the clouds at the Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico. This was nearly double the 26-mile (42 km) limit for jets that was previously observed. Two years later, researchers described shapes such as "tree jets" and "carrot jets" that they spotted during a 2002 thunderstorm over the South China Sea near the Philippines. While scientists are still trying to understand how these gigantic jets work, they believe the jets balance out the electrical charge during thunderstorms by discharging the ionosphere a part of the upper atmosphere filled with charged particles. (WNCT) - Two young girls are safe after a very close encounter with lightning. It happened in New Bern, during the severe weather on Friday. "The bus was over there and we got off the bus, started running over here, said 12-year-old Abigale and 9 year old Anna Morefield. They had just gotten home from school when the rain was hammering down. "It was storming real hard and we had just heard of a tornado watch so we thought oh my gosh! The wind was blowing really hard, rain was coming in so we came to the front porch, said the girls mother, Deborah Morefield. Their parents were watching them run to the house when all of sudden they were caught by surprise. "As soon as they got to the grass we hear the bolt of lightning just crash and saw a bolt come down, said Deborah. "The lighting struck that tree and we fell to the ground hard, Abigale remembered. "They were running and it was just like a concussion wave just forced them to the ground, said their step father David Plunkett. The girls got back up and ran to the house as their parents ran to them. "We were really scared, said Anna. "I was scared to death, it though they'd actually gotten hit it was so bright and intense, David said. They called an ambulance and had the girls checked out. EMS crews say they are ok. You can see the scar on the tree where the lightning hit. A shocking experience to say the least, but the girls say they are feeling back to normal.

Officials offer tips for lightning safety By: From staff reports | The Enterprise Ledger Published: February 20, 2012 » 0 Comments | Post a Comment COFFEE COUNTY, Ala. -- Lightning can be one of natures deadliest weather events, and it kills three Alabamians in an average year. Some storms form very quickly, producing this deadly phenomenon, but meteorologists with the National Weather Service offer tips for avoiding lightning strikes. If outside and a lightning storm develops, people should move immediately to a well-constructed house or large building. Avoid using electronics and stay away from any metal, doors or windows. All-metal vehicles are normally safe as well. A common misconception is that the tires of a vehicle protect from electrocution from lightning, but NWS lightning expert John Jensenius said metal actually conducts the lightning away from the passengers and into the ground. If in an all-metal vehicle, do not lean against the doors, he said. If caught outside and someone is too far away from safe shelter, they should crouch down but do not lie flat on the ground, NWS officials say on their website. Avoid isolated trees, and if you are in the woods, stay away from the tallest trees. NWS officials advise people to find a small grove of trees and stay at least 5 feet away to avoid flying bark in case a tree is struck. If in a valley or ravine, be cautious of flooding threats. Less than 1 percent of thunderstorms are classified as severe, which means they produce winds in excess of 58 miles per hour and hail 1 inch or larger in diameter (larger than a quarter). In addition to lightning safety precautions, people are advised to secure loose items to prevent them from becoming dangerous debris in high winds.

10 praying men struck by lightning 21 February, 2012 11:38:00 By Fanyana Mabuza Font size: A demon exorcism exercise hosted by a group of 10 members of the Red Gown Sect went awry last Friday afternoon when a lightning bolt struck the house they were praying in, killing one of them instantly. The rest were rushed by Malkerns Police to the Raleigh Fitkin Memorial Hospital, where they were treated and discharged. Sources close to the matter stated that they went to a one-room flat rented by one of their members, who had been afflicted to a strange illness. It would seem the group believed that she was demon possessed as they are reported to have told members that they were going to drive out the demons that rendered the afflicted member. Neighbours to the rented flat at the Mangozeni area in Malkerns stated that the group of the members arrived fully decked in their colourful gowns and sashes. In a flash, they were heard speaking in tongues while a frenzied sermon was in full progress. They probably did not notice the thunderstorm that was brewing outside and efforts to warn them could not bear the required results. After a few hours with the storm in full progress they opened the door probably to let in some fresh air and that was when the lightning struck, and we heard them wailing in strange voices inside the house. Others hurtled outside shouting that someone had been struck by lightning and it was when the police were called, the witness said. He stated that all 10 of them were rushed to hospital, where one of them was certified dead on arrival. The rest were treated and discharged after spending a few hours at the hospital. Police Spokesperson Superintendent Wendy Hleta confirmed the incident saying that nine Zionists were involved in the incident, where one of them was struck dead by lightning during a church service at Malkerns. The rest were treated and discharged for shock-related afflictions at the Raleigh Fitkin Memorial Hospital on Friday night, she said.
