| Lightning injures youth, kills 22 calves PTI | 01:05 PM,May 09,2012 Sonepat (Har), May 9 (PTI) At least 22 calves were killed and a youth sustained burn injuries when they were struck by lightning at a field in Dehesra village, 25 kms from here, police said today. The incident occurred last evening when Raimaan (19), a resident of Rajasthan, had taken his cattle out for grazing, they said. The victim was rushed to a private hospital in Delhi where his condition is stated to be out of danger. | COIMBATORE: A 27-year-old woman died on the spot after lightning struck her hut, in which she was living near Karamadai on the outskirts of the city on Tuesday evening. Her husband also sustained severe injuries and has been admitted to the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital (CMCH) in a critical condition. The deceased was identified as V Lakshmi, of Venmani Nagar in Karamadai. She was working as construction worker along with her husband K Veeran. The couple had two sons. On Tuesday around 6.40 pm, as it rained heavily with thunder and lightning. Lakshmi was talking over the mobile phone inside her hut and her husband was with her as well. A sudden lightning struck the hut and she died on the spot. Her husband was also affected critically. | Two students were yesterday killed by a thunderbolt at Chesegon market in West Pokot county. Agnes Chepkorkor Merrongor, 18, a form two student at Chepareria Girls' Secondary School and Rhodah Lotukey, 16, a pupil at Cheretak Primary School died on the spot when they were hit by the lightning. Central Pokot police chies Nicholas Musila said Mary Menach, 14, sustained minor injuries and was treated at a dispensary and discharged. Musila said the incident took place at 6pm on Monday when they were heading home from the market. The officer asked residents not to walk in the rainsince the area is prone to lightning. A woman escaped serious injury Sunday after a lightning bolt thwacked a tree in northwest Oak Park, Oak Leaves is reporting. She was taken to Loyola Medical Center in Maywood with non-life threatening injuries. | Edwards County, TX (CNN) - Cheval Silva had planned on watching the International Space Station streak across the sky over his ranch, but storms were rolling in, so they decided to head inside and watch T-V. Silva drifted off to sleep, but was quickly awakened by what could be called the shock of his life. "By a searing pain in my right foot, and when I woke up, I could see the room kind of exploded." "Look around you, I mean, we live out here in the middle of nowhere. People hunt here, you know, day and night. I thought I had been shot." Silva instantly went to get his granddaughter out of harm's way. "When I picked her up she started screaming ' Grandpa, you're on fire! You're on fire!" A bolt of lightning had just come through his roof onto his shoulder and out his leg catching both him and his favorite chair on fire. "They couldn't find my house. We had to load my granddaughter and myself in the truck and get down to the highway intersection." Their granddaughter was uninjured. Silva says that other than some possible nerve damage, thanks to the Edwards County EMS and doctors in Del Rio, he is going to be fine. His favorite chair, however, didn't make it. "I'm awful glad my granddaughter is safe and I'm glad I still got my legs, but I'm sure going to miss that chair." Silva says he's going to look into getting lighting rods for his home, and he isn't going to be playing the lottery anytime soon. | BEDFORD - A Lawrence County mother is stressing the importance of storm safety after she survived getting struck by lightning. It happened Monday evening in the backyard of her home just outside Bedford. Christina Eads, 36, credits her teenage son with helping to save her life. "If it hadn't been for that I was on the mower, on the rubber tire, I would probably be dead. If it hadn't been for my son, I would have absolutely be dead," Eads said. Christina Eads lived to tell what few people can. She survived being struck by lightning. "It's like a burning. Put your hand on a stove. That's what my insides feel like now." Eads' doctors have her on a heart monitor and she's being treated for nerve damage. She could be home by the end of the week. Monday evening, just before 5:00, she was mowing the lawn as storms approached her home. "It was really dark across the road from our house, way off, but where I was, nothing. I knew that it (the thunderstorm) was coming but I just didn't know it was coming that quickly. I was just mowing away and next thing I know that's it. I just remember looking up and there's lights from the ambulance." Lightning struck the lawnmower, Christina, and a nearby tree. The bolt literally blew bark right off the tree and blew the battery off the mower. It also melted her glasses, bruised her arms and burned her body. "I don't remember the hit. I don't remember the feeling. I don't remember anything really," Eads explained. Only now does she know how her 16-year-old son helped save her life. He called 911 and calmly followed medics' instructions in those key minutes after the strike. "They said he was really calm, done just what they told him," Eads said. "He's my hero. I could never be more proud, you know, he saved my life!" Again, Christina heard the storm and saw it at a distance, but didn't see it right overhead when she was struck by lightning. That's why she has a message for others, after what she's been through. "Even though you see it dark over there, it can get you over here. That's what happened to me," she said. The National Weather Service also puts out the message "When thunder roars, go indoors." Lightning can travel horizontally from a storm and hit the ground up to ten miles away. In Satkhira, six people were killed and 12 others injured by lightning and in wall collapse during the storm that hit four upazilas of the district in the morning, reports our correspondent. The dead are Jabbar Morol, 54, of Chomorkhali village in Tala upazila, Ranjida Khatun, 28, of Beula village in Assassuni upazila, Nazmul, 24, of Chilerdanga village, Thakur Dasi, 30, wife of Tara Pada Das of Nazirer Gher village and Farida Begum, wife of Wadud Munshi of Debhata upazila, and Abdul Hannan, 22, son of Zamal Uddin of Debnagar village in Sadar upazila. Police quoted locals as saying that lightning killed Nazmul and Thakur Dasi and injured 12 others while they were repairing a damaged embankment at Nazirer Gher village in Debhata upazila at around 8:30am. Jabbar, Ranjida and Hannan were struck by lightning and killed on the spot while they were working in their paddy fields. Housewife Farida Begum died in a wall collapse at their house during the storm at Norar Chak village in Debhata upazila. Our Bagerhat correspondent reported that two people died as a violent storm accompanied by heavy rain lashed Sadar and Fakirhat upazilas in the morning. The dead are Kalam Howlader, 52, son of late Hamej Uddin of Sadar upazila, and Md Selim Talukder, 28, son of Amjad Talukder of Fakirhat upazila. Kalam was seriously injured when a wall collapsed on him. He died on the way to Bagerhat Sadar Hospital at around 10:00am. Selim was struck by lightning while he was working in front of their house. He died instantly. In Jessore, a youth was killed by lighting during yesterday's storm at Bosotpur village under Sarsa upazila, says our correspondent. The deceased was identified as Sumon Ali, 23, son of Aijuddin Ali. Locals said he was struck by lightning on a paddy field and died on the spot. Lightning killed Nasimul Ghani Ramzan, 20, a student of Khulna Navy School & College, and injured Farzana, a second year student of Baira Women`s College in the compound of Subodh Chandra Hostel of Govt BL College in the city`s Daulatpur area at 9:00am, reports UNB. Our correspondent from Noakhali adds: One person was killed and at least 20 students of a secondary school were injured during a storm that lashed Kabirhat and Companiganj upazilas at noon. The storm damaged a school, over 100 tin-roofed and thatched houses and uprooted trees. The dead was identified as Mohammad Boli, 30, of Sondalpur village in Kabirhat upazila. He died as a roadside tree collapsed on him during the storm. At least 20 students of Abdur Rahim High School at Company Haat in the upazila sustained injuries as the institution collapsed during the storm. The injured students are undergoing treatment at the upazila heath complex. In Madaripur, nor'wester damaged two schools and at least 40 thatched houses in two unions under Shibchar upazila of the district yesterday, according to our correspondent. Kelly Lough said she was standing outside her home in Northside holding an umbrella while her husband was pulling the car out of the driveway when it happened. "(It's) like a jolt, like a big, full body jolt," said Lough. "There was a huge flash and just this big boom and I, like, felt it jolt up my arm and out my left arm and out my toes and the umbrella flew, and I just kind of freaked out a little bit and ran upstairs and back into the house." Lough said the lightning strike had her worried about her unborn baby. "We're both perfectly healthy. (The) heart rate, ultrasound, everything's good. She's maybe a little bit more active, but that's not a bad thing," she said. Lough said she has her shoes to thank for being safe. "They're rubber soled shoes, and usually on my way to work, I would have had heels on. I was going to throw them away and I didn't. | Ball lighting strike in Calgary, Alberta, Canada On a dull day of April 26, 2012 I was walking along a path in a little used park between two residential areas. No other person was in sight and the air was strangely damp. Suddenly, and silently, an upright screen about five feet wide appeared beside the path immediately to my right. I didn¹t look up to see how high it was because I was so astonished by its appearance. It looked like a rigid silver mesh with what looked like constantly moving, silver filaments and small flashing lights behind the mesh. In a word, it looked live. The whole thing disappeared as suddenly and silently as it had appeared. I looked at the grass, but there was no indication that anything had stood there. I looked around the park so see if there was anyone there with equipment for projecting images, but the place was deserted. I was completely alone and some distance from any houses. The next moment I was terrified by the loudest clap of thunder I had ever heard. I looked at my watch and it showed the time of 5:30 p.m. About a block or two away to the north there were hundreds of shoppers, and many vehicles on the surrounding roads. Next day the local paper reported that hundreds of people had phoned 911 to report seeing a fiery thunder bolt flying through the air at the south end of the shopping complex. The paper also carried the report of an interview with the owner of a house that the bolt had hit. The bolt stripped the bark off a tree in the garden , traveled along a chainlink fence and into the house, rupturing a water main on the way. The owners described hearing a very loud thunder clap at five thirty, and then the living room filled with a bright red light , and all electrical equipment and appliances were damaged or destroyed. When I finally got round to contacting them they had found a lot of information on ball lightning. They also agreed with me that the outside air was damp, and they were intrigued by my experience. My doctor says I must have hallucinated, but a friend of mine reports that her grandmother described having a similar experience many years ago, so I would be very grateful if you could let me know if you have had reports of a sighting similar to mine. The latest victim was a 17 - year - old youth from Medikele, Eheliyagoda who died on Saturday night on the way to Aissawella Hospital. The Meteorology Department requested the public should take maximum precautions against lightening due to the prevalent weather conditions. The airline said the Boeing 737 was carrying 121 passengers, including 11 children, and six crew. "There is no chance of any survivors. It will be only a miracle. The plane is totally destroyed," police official Fazle Akbar told AFP from the crash site. So far 110 bodies have been recovered, said Brigadier Sarfraz Ali, who is heading the recovery efforts. "We cannot identify them because some of the bodies are not recognisable," he said. Debris was scattered over a two-kilometre radius, and lights had been brought to the site to allow work to continue through the night. A probe has been ordered into the crash, Defence Secretary Nargis Sethi said. "A team of investigators comprising senior civil aviation officials have immediately started investigations," Sethi added. He was working on a live shot about the storm in Ingleside when lightning struck a puddle nearby. "I was drying out my rain gear because it was pouring," he said, "As soon as it started the shock came from my feet and traveled literally from head to toe and as soon as that happened I kind of lost weight." The jolt caused Nevarez to fall instantaneously to the ground. "Luckily it wasn't any worse than that. I'm sure because I was completely wet it kind of was one of the factors of why I was shocked all over my body," he said. Nevarez wasn't seriously injured from the jolt but understandably shaken up. He says accidents like that can happen when covering extreme weather. "Obviously there is that danger. Especially when you're out in the field and having to deal with weather but you always hope for the best and prepare yourself for the worst," he said, "I'm just glad that it wasn't anything worse than what it actually was. The plane is totally destroyed," police official Fazle Akbar told AFP from the crash site. So far 110 bodies have been recovered, said Brigadier Sarfraz Ali, who is heading the recovery efforts. "We cannot identify them because some of the bodies are not recognisable," he said. Debris was scattered over a two-kilometre radius, and lights had been brought to the site to allow work to continue through the night. A probe has been ordered into the crash, Defence Secretary Nargis Sethi said. "A team of investigators comprising senior civil aviation officials have immediately started investigations," Sethi added. Torn fragments of the fuselage, including a large section bearing the airline's logo, littered the fields around Hussain Abad. Rescue workers in orange jumpsuits and local residents used torches to search through the wreckage, assisted by soldiers carrying assault rifles. The smell of burning filled the air at the scene and human limbs were scattered in a large area, witnesses said. An AFP reporter saw an orange flight data recorder in a house where some of the wreckage fell. Pakistan Navy official Captain Arshad Mahmood said the crash occurred as the plane was approaching the runway to land. "The weather was very bad, there was hail and a thunderstorm. The pilot lost control and hit the ground. It tossed up due to the impact and exploded and came down in a fireball," he said. Saifur Rehman, an official from the police rescue team, said the plane burst into flames after impact. "Fire erupted after the crash. The wreckage is on fire, the plane is completely destroyed," Rehman told Geo television. An airport source said the plane had been due to land at Islamabad airport at 6.50pm (11.50 AEST) but lost contact with the control tower at 6.40pm and crashed shortly afterwards. Distraught relatives gathered at the airports in Islamabad and Karachi, searching for the names of loved ones on the passenger list for the ill-fated flight. "Please don't talk to me, I have just lost my loving father," a teenage boy cried in Karachi. The government was making arrangements to fly relatives to Islamabad later today. Nadeem Khan Yusufzai, director-general of Pakistan's Civil Aviation Authority, said initial reports suggested bad weather was to blame for the crash. Bhoja Air relaunched domestic operations with a fleet of five 737s in March, according to newspaper reports, when the airline was planning to start flights connecting Karachi, Sukkur, Multan, Lahore and Islamabad. Bhoja had been grounded in 2000 by civil aviation authorities amid financial difficulties, the reports said. Bharati Vidyapeeth police have identified the deceased as Sumeet Prakash Ranbhare, who was residing at the Akshayratna hostel, Mama Yenpurenagar in Dhankawadi. Ranbhare, who is originally from Chinchwad, was pursuing his engineering degree course from a private college. The investigating officer of the Bharati Vidyapeeth police station P S Konde said the incident took place around 3 pm, when Ranbhare was on the terrace. Some people, who saw him lying on the terrace after he was struck by lightning, informed the control room about the incident. "Our team rushed to the spot and found him severely burnt," he said. He added that Ranbhare was rushed to a nearby private hospital in a police van. The hospital authorities declared him dead on arrival. "He had burn marks on his face, chest, stomach and legs." Konde said that the post-mortem on his body was performed at the Sassoon general hospital. | Two Bangladeshi workers die, three sustain injuries after being struck by lightning News 2012-04-16 10:26 GUA MUSANG, April 15 (Bernama) -- Two Bangladeshi workers died, while three others sustained injuries, after being struck by lightning in a rubber plantation in Pos Balau here today. The dead are Amir Amza, 29, and Mohammad Akterwas, 35, while the three who sustained injuries are Mohammad Robiul Islam, 32, Bashamin, 29 and Lieon, 28. The Bangladeshi workers were walking through the heavy downpour to get to the workers' quarters, which is located about two kilometres from the plantation, when the mishap occurred at about 3.30pm. Mohammad Robiul said they had to leave the plantation early as rubber saplings could not be planted during rain. "Usually, we finish work at 5pm and a supervisor will drive us back to the workers' quarters, but today, we have to leave early due to the heavy downpour and lightning," he told reporters at Gua Musang Hospital. "When we were walking through the rain, I heard a loud explosion before two of my friends collapsed with their bodies almost charred and two others were screaming in pain. I was lucky to have sustained only minor injuries," he said. (KGO) -- A Bay Area man experiences the terrifying power of lightning in his backyard. He was jolted by a bolt and is alive to tell about it. He's a lucky man. Not many people walk away from something like that. It was one of the 750 lightning bolts in the storm Thursday night that struck him. That's what he was doing Thursday night during a nasty thunderstorm. Blair went out back to get some hotdogs before they burned and that's when bad luck struck. "Lightning hit the tree, it hit the fence in the backyard and I saw it. It came across the lawn, right across the asphalt, right up the barbecue and into me. It picked me up and dropped me like a ton of bricks onto the concrete," said Blair. Coastside Fire Protection District in cooperation with CAL FIRE responded to the 911 call. "The lightning was probably in the vicinity of the area, but close enough that the peripheral energy affected him," said CAL FIRE Capt. Jonathan Cox. "The force and the kind of electricity associated with that lightning doesn't just affect the place that it strikes, but kind of a perimeter around it." "I was kind of confused and a little worried," said Blair. He was stable so first responders took him to the emergency room. "Basically they got me to the hospital where they ran a bunch of tests and basically said I was OK," said Blair. Cox grew up in the Bay Area, so he knows our storms, and even he was impressed with Thursday night's system. "I don't remember a storm growing up that had that much intensity and came through with that much force," said Cox. Usually, the department only gets two to three calls a night. Last night was anything but the usual. "We had about 13 calls in the 24-hour period in the Coastside Fire District itself and another 13 or 14 calls in the unincorporated parts of San Mateo County," said Cox. Cox also says this is the perfect time to remind everyone that if you see lightning, get out of open areas, get inside, and stay away from the windows. The National Weather Service says an average of 54 people are killed each year by lightning. Hundreds more are permanently injured. Director of Centre of Excellence on Lightning Protection (CELP) UPM, Assoc Prof Dr Mohd Zainal Abidin Ab Kadir said society is not that concerned with safety as outdoor activities are still conducted during thunderstorms. "When thunderstorms occur, all indoor and outdoor activities must stop until it is over to avoid damage to property and personal injury. "The public are only aware of the danger posed by thunderstorms and take preventive measures after deaths, injuries and damage to property occur," he told Bernama here today. A student of SMK Seksyen 16, Shah Alam died after he was struck by lightning while his friend was injured on April 3 after playing in a Petaling District school football tournament in UPM. "The students were still doing sports activities during a thunderstorm. Teachers and parents must be responsible in exposing students to thunderstorm safety just like road safety education in schools." Zainal said UPM would work with the Ministry of Education to ensure thunderstorm safety awareness campaign could be held in schools. "The campaign is not only for teachers and students but also to encourage public participation to ensure safety and to take early preventive measures." Asked about safety measures during thunderstorms, he said the public should avoid being in open space and should take shelter in buildings for protection. "During thunderstorms, try not to stand near trees, stay away from metal items and tall pillars." Zainal proposed that all houses be equipped with devices to prevent lightning strike during thunderstorms to ensure the safety of occupants. "The Ministry of Housing should introduce legislation where all houses must be installed with anti-lighting devices to ensure the safety of residents." Luther Clyde Baham Sr, 54, of Kentwood, and his son, Luther Clyde Baham Jr, 33, of Hammond, were reported missing early Thursday morning after they didn't return from the fishing trip on Wednesday, said a statement from Panepinto. Baham and his son last spoke with family around 2:15 p.m. Wednesday, saying they were on the Natalbany River and the weather was getting bad and that they were going to find shelter near an abandoned camp, said Panepinto. State Wildlife and Fisheries agents found the father and son at an abandoned shelter on the river, according to Panepinto. Investigators from the sheriff's office were called in to scene. | Lightning bolt kills bricklayer on building site Monday, April 16, 2012 The Sentinel Follow AN INQUEST is due to be opened today into the death of a bricklayer who was killed by a bolt of lightning on a building site. Justin Feber, pictured right, was having a cup of tea on the building site at Wychwood Village, near Crewe, when the tragedy struck on Wednesday. Justin Feber The 41-year-old was standing with both feet on the ground and was not touching anything metallic when he collapsed following a flash of lightning and a loud bang. The father-of-one was given first aid at the scene but later died at Crewe's Leighton Hospital. Another man needed treatment for shock. Around five people are killed by a lightning bolt in the UK every year. A Cheshire Police spokesman said: "Emergency services were called following a report of a man being struck by lightning. "A 41-year-old man, who had been working on a building site, was treated by paramedics at the scene. "Sadly, he died a short time later at Leighton Hospital. "A second man, suffering from shock, was also taken to Leighton Hospital." He added: "Police attended the scene and confirmed that there were no suspicious circumstances. "A file will now be prepared for the coroner." Justin, who lived in Lancashire, was working as a sub-contractor on a Bovis Homes development at Abbey Park Way when he was killed. The firm has offered its condolences to Justin's family and pledged its support to colleagues who had witnessed the incident. "They have obviously been deeply affected by this and we will look to support them." The Health and Safety Executive has already been informed about Justin's death. But it confirmed it will not be not investigating the incident because the death is regarded as a one in a 10 million accident. A spokesman said: "This incident is not something that the Health and Safety Executive would normally investigate because it was the result of a freak natural occurrence." The deceased has been identified as a 38-year old Pashupati Bhattarai,of Wahaki VDC -3, Thanti of Parbat district, according to Police Inspector at Ward Police Office, Waling, Pradip Kumar DC. Bhattarai was critically injured when the lightning struck him while he was asleep. He died on the way to Waling primary health centre last night, informed health centre in-charge Dr. Samaj Gautam. Similarly, an elderly woman Harimaya Gurung died after she was struck by lightning at Lothar VDC in Chitwan district on Tuesday pre-dawn darkness.
