PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The National Weather Service has issued a flood advisory for portions of southern New England. THUNDERSTORMS AHEAD: HOUR-BY-HOUR FUTURECAST Thunderstorms and rain are with the region for Monday. MORE In Rhode Island, the advisory affects Kent and Washington counties, extreme southwestern Newport County and southwestern Providence County. It remains in effect until noon. Seven people on a golf course were struck by lightning in North Stonington, Conn. According to State Police, all seven were conscious and alert when taken to an area hospital from the Lake of Isles golf course. Lightning strikes were reported throughout Massachusetts Monday, as well. In Tyngsborough, a shed was struck on Frost Road. The Shrewsbury Fire Department confirmed a lightning strike at Imperial Village apartments on Route 9, where the roof was struck. Parts of Connecticut and western Massachusetts, including the cities of Hartford and Springfield, are under a flood advisory until 10:45 a.m. Forecasters say strong thunderstorms are moving through the area, and torrential downpours are possible. Up to two inches of rain an hour are possible in some areas. No one was directly struck by lightning, said Archie Cart, the course s general manager. The lightning struck close to them and they were impacted, he said. All remained conscious and most of them were sent to the hospital as a precautionary measure, he said. Cart said the employees were in a wooden building on the south, or private, course between holes 4 and 13 when lightning struck during this morning s storm. Cart said they were preparing for a regular day of play on the golf course. They have instructions to seek shelter when bad weather is approaching, and they took shelter in one of three restroom/shelter buildings on the course. No employees names were released. The North Stonington Fire Department, Mashantucket Fire Department and emergency personnel from both departments responded to the course, which is owned by the Mashantucket Pequot Tribe. Eleven employees were transported to local hospitals by ambulance, according to Patrick Boucher, director of golf, and four others, who were not showing any signs of injury, were taken by a private vehicle. Local hospitals reported 10 patients were being treated. Three of the victims were taken to The William W. Backus Hospital in Norwich, Backus spokesman Shawn Mawhiney said. At least two of the patients taken to Backus had injuries serious enough to be admitted, Mawhiney said. Six victims were sent to The Westerly Hospital, spokesman Nick Stahl said. He said this afternoon that three had been treated and released and three others were still being evaluated. Two victims with minor injuries were sent to the Lawrence & Memorial Hospital in New London, according to L&M spokesman Mike O Farrell. In New London the morning torrent washed out the area beneath a staircase that connects Eugene O Neill Drive to Water Street. Public works highway crews were on the scene at 1 p.m. Crews said water rushed across Eugene O Neill Drive and over the curb onto the side of the staircase at the north end of the police station parking lot. The water penetrated the area beneath the stairs, loosening the stone and sand supporting the staircase. The staircase, which includes two landings, remains intact. The sand and rock debris ended up strewn along Water Street and had to be collected with a payloader. The highway crew was planning to refill the crevices with larger rocks and sand to provide more support for the staircase. This morning s storm also knocked out power for 5,500 Norwich Public Utility customers when lightning struck a utility pole. At 12:30 p.m. a press statement said all but a few were about to be restored. The CL&P website reported fewer than 1 percent of customers in the region without power as of 2 p.m., down from about 5,000 at 11:30 a.m. Water Street, Howard Street, Pequot Avenue and Thames Street in New London were impassable during the height of the storm. Amtrak service between New Haven and New York was delayed due to power system problems but is running again. A massive thunderstorm arrived in the New London area at about 9 this morning. and the county was under a severe thunderstorm watch until 1 p.m., according to the National Weather Service. The weather service also issued flood and flash flood advisories for the region.

Lightning Strike Sends Woman to the Hospital One woman was sent to the hospital with second and third degree burns By Ilana Gold | Monday, Jun 25, 2012 | Updated 11:38 PM EDTView Comments (1) | Email | Print A woman is in the hospital with serious burns after being struck by lightning at Odetah Campground in Bozrah. advertisement Lightning struck a campground in Bozrah on Monday night, sending one woman to the hospital. The Odetah Campground was in shambles after a frightening lightning strike and NBC Connecticut took a tour of the damage. The lightning was so powerful it hit a woman standing near a tree that virtually exploded, and she got second and third degree burns. She was taken to a hospital in Rhode Island and officials say she is in stable condition. The current went through the ground and people setting up their tents nearby claimed they could feel it too. Within seconds, it moved to campers across the way and blew out the window. I knew it was close. I thought it struck right in front of me, said Charlie Sic. It was so close to his place it fried his cable wire and sparked a fire inside his living room and near the front door. I was running around the trailer going crazy because we put out the fire inside then I noticed the fire out here, Sic added. There were hundreds of campers here at the time and many said they had never seen or heard anything like it. It was so loud we literally jumped out of our skin. It was that loud, said Tracy Anderson. She and her family were sitting in their RV at the time and she said her little boy had never been so frightened. He was scared to death he was scared to death, Anderson added. Firefighters said this was a close call for everyone at the campground, and they were lucky no one was seriously hurt. I guess I live like a cat I ve got nine lives&I guess I have eight left, said Sic.

Where in the Valley Published 6/25/2012 Lightning Strikes Young Worker at Post Mills Farm By Sarah Brubeck Valley News Staff Writer Thetford -- A teenage farm worker was injured after being struck by lightning over the weekend while working at Crossroad Farm in Post Mills. Neighbors and friends at the victim's home on Route 244 yesterday identified him as Connor Cook, a 16-year-old Thetford Academy student. Cook was in critical condition at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center last night, according to a nurse supervisor. Neither the Thetford Police Department nor the volunteer fire department responded to requests for comment over the weekend. Vermont State Police couldn't provide any information about the incident yesterday. In a brief prepared statement yesterday, Janet Taylor, who has owned Crossroad Farm with her husband, Tim, since 1980, said that when thunder was heard in the distance early Saturday afternoon, the farm's workers were radioed to come inside. Before they could all get in, one worker, whom she declined to identify, was struck by lightning, she said. Ben Bauer, 19, a Crossroad Farm worker, said he had been harvesting squash and zucchini before the strike, around 1:30 p.m. The weather didn't look that bad, he said, and the heavy rain that would eventually sweep through the area hadn't started. Bauer said he felt a sudden shock that seemed to come from the ground. It felt like a shock from an electric fence, he said. It hurt, but I was fine. Bauer said he and his co-workers headed for the shelter of a nearby truck that was used to store crops, but one worker was on the ground unresponsive. The victim was brought back to the farmhouse and CPR was conducted until emergency personnel arrived, Taylor said. There were eight to 15 workers at the farm at various times throughout the day on Saturday, she said. Taylor declined to comment further. Crossroad Farm is on West Fairlee Road between routes 113 and 244, about a half-mile from Lake Fairlee. The 60-acre vegetable farm has a large stand that is open daily during the growing season, and the produce grown there is also sold at the Norwich farmers market, according to the farm's website. The same storm system that dumped more than 5 inches of rain on Ocean County this afternoon is now producing additional cells of dangerous weather, prompting the National Weather Service to issue a severe thunderstorm warning for parts of Middlesex, Monmouth, Morris and Somerset counties. Officials have confirmed that one person has been struck by lightning at Sandy Hook, and scores of motorists have been stranded on flooded streets in parts of Ocean County. The latest storm warning is effective until 6:45 p.m., specifically for northern Middlesex, northeastern Monmouth, southeastern Morris and parts of Somerset. An alert issued by the weather service warned that this storm could generate winds as strong as 60 mph. A flash flood warning remains in effect for southern Ocean County until 7:15 p.m. John Warren, spokesman for Gateway National Recreation Area at Sandy Hook, said one person was struck by lightning along with at least 10 buildings when a storm passed through the area just before 3 p.m. "It was a very intense storm that settled over the north end of Sandy Hook," he said this evening. "At the entrance, it was in sunshine." Within minutes of park rangers and lifeguards clearing the beaches, "heavy rainfall, near continuous strikes of lightning and rapid thunderclaps" descended upon the area, Warren said. The unidentified man was believed to have been fishing in the Horseshoe Cove section of Fort Hancock historic district on Sandy Hook when he was struck by lightning. He was conscious when he was taken to a local hospital for treatment and his condition was unknown, Warren said. Several chimneys were also damaged after about a dozen buildings at Sandy Hook were struck by lightning as the storm, described as a "supercell," passed through, Warren said. Some roadways had up to 2 feet of flooding, he said. View full sizeChristopher Baxter/The Star-Ledger This street in Stafford Township is one of the many roads in Ocean County that were flooded from the torrential downpours that pounded the region this afternoon. Earlier this afternoon, a severe thunderstorm pounded Ocean County with more than 5 inches of rain in only 90 minutes, clearing beaches, stranding cars, downing trees and causing extensive flooding along the coast. The National Weather Service issued a flash flood warning for parts of Ocean County, extending along the Garden State Parkway from Toms River south to around Barnegat. The storm produced large hail, strong winds and extremely heavy rains in the region. Hail as big as a half-dollar shredded tree leaves and dented cars near Barnegat, and hail the size of golf balls hit the ground in Manahawkin, according to the weather service. Trees were knocked down by heavy winds in many parts of Ocean County. In Manahawkin, several cars were stuck in flood waters up to the windows, with occupants reported trapped inside. Flooding has also closed multiple roadways, including parts of Route 72, in Stafford Township. FAST-MOVING STORMS Joe Rossi, of Clearwater Avenue in Stafford Township, said the storms rolled in fast. I would say around 1 o clock maybe a little earlier, Rossi said. I was on Long Beach Island, we were on the beach, it was a beautiful morning and we knew the storms were coming in, so around 12 o clock we got to our house. Rossi said on the way home he saw a line of dark and really nasty storms straight ahead of him. He said about a half-hour after arriving home, the wind picked up and marble-sized hail began pounding his deck. The street out from turned to a river, he said. David Gard/The Star-Ledger A string of powerful thunderstorms rolled through New Jersey today. Central High School's graduation ceremony at Newark Symphony Hall ended just as the storm hit downtown Newark. "This was not small hail this was hail that dents you car, Rossi said. My son s never seen it, so I was showing him what hail looks like. He said the storms became so bad he had his family turn off the lights and gather candles and flashlights. He lost power for about two hours. In all, it was a harrowing afternoon. Lightning struck a block away from us and hit a tree, Rossi said. We heard that and it kind of shook us a little bit. He added it was the worst storm he s ever seen in the area. Usually they roll in and out but this has been prolonged, he said. At about 5:30 p.m., the home across the street from Rossi caught fire. The Stafford Township fire chief was still on scene about 6:30 p.m. and said it was not yet clear whether lightning or something else caused the blaze, which tore through the home and caused significant damage. Before the call came in, he said, he was about to send his station home after a long day a day that began with saving six people trapped in their cars overcome by flood water on nearby Nautilus Drive. There were a lot of lightning strikes, trees, poles, trees down in the wind, Johnson said. Star-Ledger staff writers Christopher Baxter, Tomas Dinges, Len Melisurgo and Stephen Stirling contributed to this report. One of the nurses of Cocopa clinic told the Daily Observer that the lightning must have struck repeatedly to have killed the four victims because they were in three different rooms of the house. When the first lightning struck, it entered the first room where one of the victims was sleeping and kill her instantly, and then it entered another room where the overseer was and killed him along with two other children, she added. Those killed include Peter Dorpah, father and overseer of camp two, T-girl Dorpah, Melvin Dorpah and Teewon Dorpah. All of them were pronounced death upon arrival at the Ganta United Methodist Hospital. The late Peter Dorpah was the husband of two wives. One of the wives who was with him on the night of the incident was badly injured with burn wound on her back. The wounded woman was also believed to have lost two of her children in the incident while her mate lost one. This is not the first time that lightning has killed persons in the area. On the 4th of May 2011 three market women including an 8 months old pregnant woman were mysteriously killed by lightening during the evening hours as they were packing their good to return home. The recent deaths sent shockwaves among the citizens and workers of the concessional area stirring mix opinions, with some attributing the mysterious deaths of the victims to witchcraft.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. David Allgood of Springfield is one of the few people who can say he took a strike from lightning and lived to tell about it. "Let's just say I wasn't hit by a bolt, but what they had told me was I had conducted a bolt of lightning," Allgood, 33, shared exclusively with NewsChannel 5 from his hospital bed at Vanderbilt Hospital. "So, what that means is it started somewhere; it went through me, and it ended somewhere else," said Allgood. Allgood, a single father of a 9-year-old boy, said he was rolling up the windows to his pickup truck Friday evening when the strike happened. Allgood was knocked to the ground, disoriented and recalls some head-to-toe paralysis, at least part of the time. "My hands were still so numb, swelling and tingling," he said. "I still remember feeling nothing." David said doctors at Vanderbilt wanted to keep an eye on him and his internal organs overnight; but he plans to be released and return home on Sunday, just in time for Father's Day.

walking in park Ground Strike,Indirect,Outside
Moscow, June 13 (IANS/RIA Novosti) A stroll in the park ended in hospital for five Uzbek college students in Moscow after a lightning bolt hit the ground next to them, giving them an electric shock, police said. The students -- all of them Uzbekistan natives -- were hospitalized, but their injuries were not life-threatening, police said. Medics allowed them to return to their dormitory after performing electrocardiography. Reports said the students were on a park footpath which appeared to be electrically conductive. But police said later they were walking along a regular street when the lightning struck. A storm warning was issued for Moscow Tuesday. Rain hit the capital throughout the day, but ceased during a mass opposition rally in the afternoon and a pop concert on the Red Square in the evening. Statistical estimates put the odds of being struck by lightning in a lifetime of 80 years at between 1/3,000 and 1/10,000. --IANS/RIA Novosti

According to a lifeguard who was on duty, as the storm rolled in, everyone quickly hurried off the beach. Then suddenly a lightning bolt hit the water's edge, and that is when someone noticed a boy lying near the water. A family member began performing CPR until the lifeguards got there. Paramedics performed CPR in the ambulance and were finally able to get a pulse. The boy was last listed in critical condition Sunday night. Landon Broussard, the Delcambre boy who was struck by lightning last month while vacationing with his family in Alabama, is showing signs of improvement. WPMI-TV in Mobile, AL reports Landon still has a tracheotomy and is unable to speak but he is now opening his eyes. "He opened his eyes and watched the Atlanta Braves game on T.V.," his father Clay Broussard told WPMI-TV last week. "The prayers are always coming in. The gifts, the cards. We have a small community, but a strong community back home." The family also told the TV station that Landon is getting physical therapy twice a day, and as soon as he is well enough, he'll be transferred to a hospital in New Orleans, to be just a little bit closer to family, friends and home.

Florida Basser Killed by Lightning by Florida Sportsman Newswire " June 12, 2012 " Comments (0) 4 From Press Release TBF mourns the loss of division championship angler, Lorenzo Magdaleno, 51, from Lake Placid, Fl. He was a veteran angler and a member of the Florida Bass Federation and the Homestead Hawg Hunters club for more than a decade. Magdaleno was pronounced dead by Florida officials on Friday, June 8, after a bolt of lightning apparently struck Magdaleno and his boat partner, Mike Hardin, from Tennessee while they fishing shortly after noon prior to the final day weigh-in of the TBF Southern Division Championship on Florida s Lake Okeechobee. Preliminary reports outline a quick moving afternoon storm passed over part of the giant lake. Other parts of the lake remained clear and sunny, while some were cloudy with drizzle. The information we have at this point is Lorenzo Magdaleno and his partner were fishing approximately 45 minutes away from the tournament launch area. Magdaleno was in the front of the boat running the trolling motor as it was his half of the day (TBF division championships are draw events where both anglers get control of the boat and choose the water for one half of each tournament day.) Magdaleno s partner, Mike Hardin who was the boat s owner caught a limit during the first half of the day and was fishing off the back deck to allow Magdaleno his best chance to finish off his limit. Hardin was knocked off his feet by the strike and awoke after an undetermined amount of time on the back deck of the boat not knowing what had exactly happened. Hardin was examined at the local hospital and released, as noted Magdaleno did not survive. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Lorenzo s extended list of family and friends, the Florida Bass Federation, as well as, Lorenzo s partner for the day, Mike Hardin, who was in the boat with him during this tragedy, TBF National President, Robert Cartlidge, stated. To say that the final day weigh-in Friday was a somber experience would be a tremendous understatement, as all anglers and families there were impacted by the loss. TBF staff on site told me there was not a dry eye anywhere at the weigh-in as one after another every single state federation President in the southern division, every single angler, and even the angler who won the Ranger Cup bonus money, EVERYONE who came up on stage pledged to donate their entire prize checks, every single dollar, to Lorenzo s family s needs. THAT is what our federation is about. We also want to thank all the emergency response personal, the TBF staff on site and all the state presidents and community volunteers who were pitching in to help our anglers during a time of crisis. I am honored to know these people and to call them friends. This exemplifies what it means to be a member of the federation family and it makes me very proud. The Bass Federation Inc., (TBF) is the oldest and largest grassroots fishing organization in America. TBF is owned by those it serves and is dedicated to the sport of fishing. TBF annually conducts over 20,000 fishing, youth, and conservation events and has provided the foundation for the bass fishing industry for over 40 years. Riverton man survived being struck by lightning; hospitalized for three days 5 hours ago by County 10 News Desk 0 Lightning flashes were recorded in this photo taken outside the Riverton National Weather Service office by meteorologist Reid Wolcott. By Ernie Over, managing editor, County10.com (Lander, Wyo.) A 25-year-old Riverton man said he is lucky to be alive today after surviving being struck by lightning at his work site Monday afternoon. Bryce Sebring, who works setting mobile and manufactured homes for P.M.S. Inc. of Riverton, was working on setting a new manufactured home around 2 p.m. Monday about six miles north of Lander. I was under the home on all fours and I m not exactly sure what happened, but a lightning bolt apparently struck next to me and it traveled through my hands and knees, came out my back and into the trailer, he said from his home Friday. He said the ground was wet where he was working and that it was raining at the time. Sebring thought at first that his buddy, Tim Fuller, was pulling a prank on him. I thought he poked me with a cattle prod or something, he said. I jumped up real quick but then fell back to my knees when I realized it wasn t him. I went and sat in my truck for about 10 minutes, and I was feeling worse, so Tim rushed me to the (Lander) hospital. Once there, Sebring said he was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit. They told me at the hospital that I was a walking miracle. Sebring said the only outward evidence of the lighting strike is a big blister on his back where the bolt exited his body. Most of the damage was internal. I still have lots of chest pain, my eye sight is still blurry and my arms and legs really hurt, he said. But I had therapy at the hospital so I can walk again. He was discharged from the hospital Thursday and is now recuperating at home. Riverton National Weather Service Meteorologist Reid Wolcott said a review of radar records indicated that a cluster of about a dozen lighting strikes were recorded in the general area where Sebring was hit around 2 p.m. Monday. There was a thunderstorm passing through the area then, Wolcott said. Sebring said, it was kind of funny, but not really, but about 20 minutes before I was struck, I was watching the storm coming and remembering telling Tim that I was going to quit because I wasn t going to work in rain while it was thundering. I was kidding with him, but then, I got hit. Spooky. The Riverton father of three said he now has a new respect for lightning and doesn t plan to put himself in a position to be vulnerable for another lightning strike. Everyone said I am really lucky and that I should go to the casino, he joked. My brother from Colorado also called and told me to buy a lottery ticket! The National Weather Service Lightning Safety website (www.lightningsafety.noaa.gov/) reports than an average of 54 people are killed by lightning each year. To date, in 2012, there have been three reported lightning deaths. Lightning bolts can strike as far away as 10 miles from a thunderstorm, according to the NWS, and if a person can hear thunder, they re most likely in danger if they re working outside or in an exposed area. Sturdy buildings and hard topped vehicles are the best locations to escape a thunderstorm, but open buildings, rain shelters and small sheds are dangerous are not good choices. Check out the NWS link noted above for more complete lightning safety information.

Two people struck by lightning in Sheldon Posted: May 25, 2012 11:00 PM EDT Updated: May 25, 2012 11:00 PM EDT By Evan Coughlin - email Featured Videos Two people struck by lightning in Sheldon The town of Sheldon, Iowa is rattled after two people in town were struck by lightning. The Family of one of the victims is in the dark as to what happened. According to local residents in Sheldon around 4:00pm two people were struck by lightning while working at the Maintainer Plant. Witnesses on scene tell KSFY the two victims were transported to the local Sanford hospital. KSFY also spoke with a family member of one of the victims. According to Mark Burrington; Chris Gilbert was struck by lightning in the face. Sanford Sheldon health officials confirmed both victims were air transported to Sioux Falls. Burrington says Gilbert's condition "doesn't look too good." Here are a couple of tips to help you avoid getting hit by lightning: Stay away from any open areas like fields, golf courses, or parking lots. If you're the tallest thing around, you're the easiest target. Get away from water, it's a conductor. Don't stand under tall objects like trees or towers. These are easy targets, and the electricity might jump to you too. Find a car and get in it. Even though it is metal and seems like a perfect target, if it is struck the electricity will just move into the tires, which is a non-conductor.

He'd done well, finished in the top 10 percent, but then a storm came "We took cover by some bathrooms and shower area, and then the lighting comes and starts cracking right above us," Horrisberger said. That's when he said one of the bolts hit him. "I don't remember any visuals, I just remember the excruciating muscle contraction through my body and then going down," Horrisberger said. Horrisberger showed Channel 2's Dave Huddleston where he thinks the bolt entered his body. He told Huddleston it traveled down his right side and exited through his right hip. This energy from the bolt left Horrisberger with burns and holes in his clothes. "Everybody's eyes were wide like deer, like 'what just happened?'" Horrisberger said. He was checked out by paramedics and even went to Emory Hospital, everything came back normal. "They had never seen anyone survive a strike like this before, is what they had said to me," Horrisberger said Horrisberger said the whole experience has changed his outlook on life. "All those things can be snatched rather quickly in an experience like this. It's apparent that we should be grateful," Horrisberger said. The one thing doctors said they want to keep an eye on is Horrisberger's kidneys. He also said as the day goes on, he gets a little tired, but each day it gets better. Horrisberger said he has nothing scheduled now, but he's looking forward to his next race.

Mom of Ohio inmate killed in prison lightning strike alleges negligence; state denies claim Article by: Associated Press Updated: May 15, 2012 - 8:57 AM 0 comments resize text printbuy reprintsTweet COLUMBUS, Ohio - The mother of an inmate who was struck by lightning while jogging in a recreation yard is accusing the Ohio prisons department of negligence that contributed to his death. The state is denying the claim. Linda Bickerstaff, of Akron, filed the case in the Ohio Court of Claims over the death of 33-year-old Dalin Anderson. He died and several other inmates were hurt in the May 2010 lightning strike at the Belmont Correctional Institution in St. Clairsville in eastern Ohio. Bickerstaff alleges the prison failed to protect the inmates' safety because no corrections officers were in the exercise yard and they didn't close it as storms approached. She seeks at least $75,000 in damages. The state says Anderson's death was the result of acts beyond the prison department's control. more from nation Stepmom faces extradition in HI in kids' abduction Tropical Storm Aletta weakening in the Pacific Seattle gives DOJ police reform counterproposal

Marlee grandmother struck by lightning 15 May, 2012 11:24 AM A MARLEE grandmother may have received the fright of her life after being struck by lightning through her kitchen window. On Thursday May 3, Lyrian Martin was cooking eggs on the stove for her husband Gordon and noticed a storm had blown over and it was raining heavily. Her kitchen window blind was closed and she was standing at the stove between the window over the sink and a small television sitting on the kitchen bench. After hearing three claps of thunder, Lyrian said she screamed in pain when she felt an electrical current fly past her to the television which immediately blew up. I ve touched many electric fences but nothing has ever felt like this, she said. After inspecting the broken television the couple found burn marks on the cotton doily sitting underneath and on the bench top. Not only did the explosion damage the television in the kitchen but blew another two in the house. Lyrian said she had a terrible headache and was a bit shaky for a few days after, but is now on the mend. She said they recorded 22 millimetres of rain in 10 minutes during the storm at their property in Robinson Road. I love storms and usually watch the lightning. But next time I ll be standing in the corner of a room, she laughed. I didn t know it could come through glass, she said. After explaining the story to their family, the Martin s grandchildren were keen to inspect the burnt doily and hear the story in person from their lucky grandmother. Lyrian said she has learnt a lesson and hopes others will be wary of lighting during storms. I m lucky I m still here to tell the story, she said.

Lightning strikes two workers Two construction workers at the new Westbahnhof train station were hospitalised after being struck by lightning. Shocked witnesses described how the force of the 300,000 volt shocker had hurled the pair 15ft into the air after the incident on Wednesday. The bolt of lightning struck near the central train station on the corner of Arsenalstraße and the Wiedner Gürtel. The two workers aged 37 and 40 were treated on the site by paramedics and hospitalised but are expected to make a full recovery. Doctors said the pair were taken to hospital as it was routine after a lightning strike that could cause blood coagulation disruption and heart rhythm problems.

A 52-year-old man died after being struck by lighting while fishing off the coast of barangay Colon, Naga City, southern Cebu, yesterday morning. Despite the rains, Rolando Lim went against his wife Veronica s advice and fished off the waters of Colon. Witnesses said they were 100 meters away from the victim when he was hit and fell down from his boat at 5:45 a.m. yesterday. When the fishermen went near the fishing boat, they saw an unconscious man lying face-down and holding a fishing rod inside the boat, PO1 Marlon Añabeza of the Minglanilla police said. Añabeza said Lim s remains was brought to the St. Peter Funeral Homes in Carcar City. Funeral staff said the family already brought the body to their residence. Lim, a resident of Central Poblacion, Naga City, caught three fishes before the freak accident happened. He was rushed to the Minglanilla District Hospital where he was declared dead on arrival. Pagasa weather analyst Vangie Tolentino said the heavy downpour and lightning were caused by the Inter-tropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) over Mindanao. Tolentino said the cumulonimbus cloud yesterday morning was very thick, which could have triggered the lightning incident in Naga City. Correspondents Jhunnex Napallacan and Gabriel C. Bonjoc
