How to Install a Fan & Light Control Switch

Attention to wiring configurations will help expedite the switch installation process.
A fan lazily spinning above the bed helps make warm nights comfortable, but you don't need to sacrifice overhead lighting when you add a ceiling fan. Overhead fans with attached lighting give you the best of both options. However, to keep from having to reach for a pull cord to control each element, you need to install a fan and light control switch so fan operation and the light can be controlled independently and in one convenient location.

Locate the fan and light's circuit breaker at the main electrical panel. Switch the breaker off to cut off power to the appliance's circuit. Verify that the electricity is completely shut down for that electrical line by testing the circuit breaker with a non-contact circuit tester.

Remove the previous switch by unscrewing the cover plate with a screwdriver. Place the cover plate aside.

Unscrew the screws holding the old switch into the wall with a screwdriver. Pull the switch outward so the attached wiring can stretch out. Let the old switch hang downward temporarily. There should be four wires attached to the back of the old switch.

Take a picture of the hanging wiring with a digital camera or phone equipped with a camera to remind you of the wiring connections. Alternatively, wrap a small piece of masking tape around each of the four hanging wires and note their connection point on the tape with a pen. For example, note "blue to red" on the blue hanging wire to indicate it connects to the red wire.

Detach the old switch from the wall's wires by turning the holding screws on the back of the switch with a screwdriver. Unwrap and pull each wire from the switch. Place the switch aside.

Connect the black wire on the new switch to the lower black wire protruding from the wall's area by hand twisting the exposed wiring ends together. This lower black wire should lead to the home's electrical panel, not the fan itself. Consult the new switch's instructions for specific wire color differences; each manufacturer has a different wiring color scheme that can differ between switch models.

Connect the red wire on the new switch to the other black wire from the wall by hand twisting the exposed wiring ends together. This black wire should lead to the fan.

Connect the new switch's blue wire to the wall's red wire by hand twisting the exposed wire ends.

Connect the new switch's white wire to the two white wires protruding from the wall by hand twisting all three exposed wires together.

Attach wire twist connectors to each of the four twisted wire configurations by hand turning them until they are snugly covering the exposed wiring. Make sure that no wiring is exposed at this point. Any exposed wiring should be covered with additional electrical tape if the connector does not cover it completely to avoid fire hazards and electrocution.

Carefully push the wiring into the wall area along with the attached switch. Screw the switch into the wall with a screwdriver and supplied screws.

Screw the cover plate back onto the wall with a screwdriver. Turn on the circuit breaker at the main electrical panel. Switch the fan and light control switch on and off to verify that it is working correctly.

Warning
- Do not attempt to work on the switch with the electricity on at the main panel. Ask a friend to guard the panel, if necessary, to make sure no one accidentally powers the circuit on. Electrocution can be fatal.
