What You Can Do At Home
to Use Solar Power
Did you know solar cells can be as small as a fingernail, or they can be as large as roof tiles that cover the entire surface of people's roofs?

When at home, you and your family should think about using solar energy because it is easy to use and great for the environment.
One easy thing your family can do is to have an adult buy little solar panels or the solar panels that power lights in the yard instead of using the kind of lights that run through the electric current running through the yard.  Also, it's easy to use solar calculators instead of battery powered calculators.
You should also talk about how and why to use solar power with your parents after reading the What's Up With Solar Energy page.  Solar panels can also supply energy and heating to your home. They can even supply energy during the night since they have energy storage devices!
Another way to use the sun's energy is to design houses so they collect heat. Architects do this by designing the building so that it faces the direction where it can use sunlight to the greatest advantage. Architects also add large glass windows to houses.  These windows allow sunlight inside to warm the house during the winter. You can also plant trees to protect your house from getting too hot during the summer.
Another easy way to use sunlight is to heat the water in your water pipes. If you paint the hot water pipes black and/or put insulation around them, you can lower the cost of using electricity to heat your water.
You might have seen little solar panels around your house or in your yard. Or maybe you have even seen big solar panels on people's roofs or in their yards.  Some people cover their roofs with photovoltaic cells (PV's). These panels supply energy to homes. If you have or have not seen solar panels, solar energy is a great way to supply energy to your home. Anything that lowers energy bills is great, right? Solar energy is becoming popular in residential areas, so you’ll probably be seeing more solar panels, and that is a great thing!
While PV's are still more expensive than burning fossil fuels, they are getting cheaper. In Japan and the USA, billions have been spent to develop PVs. Germany has also put a lot of money into solar projects.
The United Kingdom, Germany and Japan have set goals to have hundreds of thousand of roofs fitted with solar panels. Also, people in the Netherlands are developing the use of solar energy. So, is it time for you to get involved?
